This shuldn’t cme as a surprise. We knw self­dubt is a pervasive and ften paralyzing cncern, particularly fr wmen. A study by psychlgists at Crnell and Washingtn State highlighted higher levels f self­dubt in wmen. Research has als shwn that wmen will apply fr a jb nly if they meet all f the qualificatins, while men will apply when they fulfill nly 60%. Anther recent study identified a cnsiderable gender gap when it cmes t self­prmtin, with wmen prviding less favrable assessments f their wn past perfrmance and ptential future ability. “Hwever, when archaelgists (考古学家) were wrking at several early Nelithic sites in the Lwer Yangtze River Valley, they fund a lt f small pieces f stne, which had sharp edges that culd have been used fr harvesting plants.”

In the Lwer Yangtze River Valley, the tw earliest Nelithic culture grups were the Shangshan and Kuahuqia.
The researchers examined 52 flaked (成薄片的) stne tls frm the Shangshan and Hehuashan sites, the latter f which was ccupied by Shangshan and Kuahuqia cultures.
T determine if the stne flakes were used fr harvesting rice, the team cnducted use­wear and phytlith residue (植物石残渣) analyses.
Fr the use­wear analysis, micr­scratches (划痕) n the tls’ surfaces were examined under a micrscpe. The results shwed that 30 flakes have use­wear patterns similar t thse prduced by harvesting siliceus (silica­rich) plants, likely including rice.
Thrugh the phytlith residue analysis, the researchers analyzed the micrscpic residue left n the stne flakes knwn as “phytliths” (silica skeletns f plants). They fund that 28 f the tls cntained rice phytliths.
“What’s interesting abut rice phytliths is that rice husk and leaves prduce different kinds f phytlith, which enabled us t determine hw the rice was harvested,” says Wang.
The findings frm the use­wear and phytlith analyses illustrated that tw types f rice harvesting methds were used—“finger­knife” and “sickle” techniques. Bth methds are still used in suthern China tday.
