Finding lw-cst sustainable building materials is imprtant fr the envirnment and in prviding access t affrdable husing. Researchers have created a cmpsite (复合的) building material by replacing sand in building materials with a cmmn, nn-degradable (不可降解的) waste prduct: used dispsable diapers (一次性尿布).
Driven by a desire t slve Indnesia’s significant ppulatin grwth and demand fr lw-cst husing, researchers lked fr a way f maintaining the benefits f building materials but making it mre envirnmentally friendly and cheaper t prduce. Building material samples cntaining different prprtins (比例) f dispsable diaper waste were tested. Then the researchers calculated the maximum amunt f sand that culd be replaced with diaper waste, finding that up t 8% f the sand culd be replaced t safely cnstruct a huse with 36 square meters. 10% f the sand culd be replaced in a three-stry huse and 27% in a single-stry huse. In terms f the materials used t create partitin walls (隔断墙), the researchers said they culd replace up t 40% f sand.
“This research has cncluded that adding used diapers t building materials des nt significantly weaken its strength,” the team stated. “It prves using diapers t create cmpsite materials is feasible, particularly cncerning the develpment f envirnmentally friendly and cst-effective materials.”
Indnesia is ranked sixth glbally fr dispsable diaper usage. Many used diapers are thrwn away in the cuntry’s rivers and waterways, causing pllutin. In 2019, the ttal waste in Indnesia was 29.21 millin tns. This figure rse t 32.76 millin tns in 2020.
Hwever, the researchers knw the current limitatins f using waste diapers as a cnstructin material. Fr ne thing, it wuld require engagement with waste treatment facilities t cllect used diapers frm husehlds and deal with them. Secndly, machines that cut up the used diapers wuld be needed n a large scale.
Nnetheless, the research highlights the ptential fr using nn-degradable waste, addressing sustainability issues and prviding lw-cst husing.

When scientists talk abut recent extinctins, birds and mammals (哺乳动物) get mst f the attentin. But the first glbal analysis f its kind finds it is twice as many plants that have disappeared as birds, mammals, and amphibians (两栖动物) cmbined.
Researchers reviewed published research, internatinal databases, and museum specimens such as grasses frm Madagascar, finding that 571 plants species have gne extinct in the past 250 years. One reasn why the ttal is higher than that f the well-studied animals is that there are simply mre species f plants. Lking at percentages, the situatin is wrse fr mammals and birds. The lss includes the Chile sandalwd tree in the Suth Pacific, which was cut dwn fr its fragrant (芳香的) wd. It was last seen n Rbinsn Cruse Island in 1908. The extinctin rates amng plants have been highest fr trees and shrubs n islands, which ften have species that ccur nwhere else, and in regins with rich diversity, especially the trpics and in Mediterranean climates.
Just a few years later, the wrld lst the banded Trinity (Thismia americana), a leafless plant that grew entirely undergrund except fr its flwers. Mst species f this kind f plant grw in rainfrests, but this plant was first described in 1912 in a sandy wetland in Chicag, Illinis, and was wiped ut by develpment.
Accrding t the team’s reprt in Nature Eclgy & Evlutin, the ttal f 571 extinct plant species is fur times higher than the fficial listing kept by the Internatinal Unin fr Cnservatin f Nature. Even s, it is prbably still an underestimate (低估), as less is knwn abut the status f plants in Africa and Suth America than n ther cntinents. Many f these species may disappear, t. A majr review f the status f glbal bidiversity recently estimated that mre than a millin species, including 14% f plant and animal diversity, are threatened with extinctin.
32.What caused the extinctin f the Chile sandalwd tree?
    A.Climate change.B.The market demand.C.Envirnmental pllutin.D.The lss f the habitat.
33.What d we knw abut the banded trinity?
A.It flwered withut bearing seeds.B.It disappeared during the 19th century.
C.It was a flwering plant withut leaves.D.It was a rare plant grwing undergrund.
34.What can we infer abut the plant species frm the text?
A.Abut ne plant species dies ut every year.B.Their current situatin is mre wrrying.
C.Mre plant species will keep alive in the reserve.D.They wuld be replaced by ther new species sn.
35.In which sectin f the newspaper can we find the text?
