Often, there is a false idea that ne must be “in-the-knw” t truly appreciate artwrks. Hwever, fine art pens the dr t everyne. Learning hw t lk at and understand artwrks requires us t take the time t view, identify and think.
Lk at the Art
As the first step it’s necessary t take a mment t identify the artwrk’s general features:
● Is it a painting, sculpture r craftwrk?
● Des it appear messy r rganized?
● Are the clrs bright r sft?
Identify the Art and Artist
Knwing when r hw the artwrk was made and learning smething abut the artist can reveal mre cntext. We all knw the famus painting Guernica is a masterpiece created by Picass in 1937. Hwever, if we can find ut Picass cmpsed the painting t reflect a bmbing during the Spanish Civil War, we’ll knw mre abut its anti-war meaning.
Even if the histrical cntext f an artwrk is nt bvius, knwing the year f its creatin ffers mre cntext.
Think Abut the Meaning
Use what yu bserved in the first tw steps t think abut meanings the artwrk culd have.
Cnsider what the title, the subjects, r the symbls meant t the artist when he r she created the artwrk. What d the clrs say abut the artist, and hw d they apply t the subjects in the art? Fr example, the wls in Leb’s wrks represent wisdm, but why are they s brightly clred?
In additin, ask hw the art makes yu feel. Many artists have specific meanings behind their art, but als encurage viewers t cme up with their wn explanatins. Still, every explanatin is nt autmatically crrect, which is why the techniques described abve are helpful in finding clues.
The next time yu’re admiring a wrk f art, keep these techniques in mind, and its meaning may unfld befre yur eyes.

In 2014, Xu Yitang, a Beijing native wh had been studying Peking Opera since childhd, went with friends fr a birthday celebratin t Beijing Z. Little did he knw that a chance encunter at the aquarium there wuld excite a lifelng passin. As Xu Yitang stared at crals bathed in tank's light, a sense f wnder crwded int his mind. Lst in the beauty and mystery f the creatures, he spent the entire afternn in frnt f it. After that, he began t frequent the lcal market t learn abut cral farming frm merchants wh sell rnamental plants, fish and crals. He als searched fr infrmatin n relevant frums nline. Befre lng, he had set up a small fish tank at hme and started cultivating a cral.
Nwadays, Xu Yitang wh has mved t the trpical island f Suth China's Hainan prvince, wrks fr a Sanya-based trpical bilgical labratry belnging t the Chinese Academy f Sciences. A cral reef's beautiful clrs cme frm the symbitic algae(共生藻类) zxanthellae that prvide mre than 90 percent f the energy thrugh phtsynthesis(光合作用). Cral bleaching ccurs when cral expels the algae and dies due t the lack f nutrients.

Le's face it: it can be challenging t mtivate urselves t read a 382-page bk when we can watch a mvie, listen t an audi bk, r watch a TikTk vide instead. Hwever, if mst f yur daily reading is made up f scial media psts, text messages, and news headlines, yu’re missing ut. S, what are the benefits f taking up the hbby f reading bks?
One f the clearest benefits f reading bks every day is learning. Unlike a TikTk vide, bks prvide access t in-depth knwledge. Ging beynd the surface f a subject is imprtant t success. This is prbably why the authr Rald Dahl nce said,“If yu are ging t get anywhere in life, yu have t read a lt f bks." And yu can learn literally anything frm bks. Fr example, whenever anybdy asks Eln Musk, the funder f SpaceX, hw he learned t build rckets, he says, "I read bks."
Besides, reading exercises the brain. Reading is t the mind what exercise is t the bdy. Research has cnfirmed that reading mtivates a cmplex netwrk f circuits and signals in the brain. As yu imprve yur reading ability, the netwrk becmes strnger. In anther study, researchers measured hw reading a nvel affected ur brains. The participants read the nvel Pmpeii by Rbert Harris, and as tensin in the stry develped, mre areas f the brain were activated .
Want t knw the best part? The scans shwed that brain cnnectivity increased while ne was reading and fr days afterward, demnstrating the great benefits f reading bks every day.
Our brains have a "use it r lse it" plicy, just like ur muscles. In ther wrds, if we dn't exercise ur minds regularly, ur cgnitive abilities may drp. Hwever, when we read every day, we can keep them strng and high.
What can we learn abut reading bks frm paragraph 1?
Which f the fllwing best explains “get anywhere" underlined in paragraph 2?
What des reading d t the brain?
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Tday's reading habits
B. The pwer f reading bks
C. Hw reading benefits the brain
D. What happens when yu start reading every day?
D
“In a clse cperatin between several first-class chemists, physicists, and bilgists, we have develped a very efficient water filter (净水器). It des nt need any energy surce but sunlight,” said Frró. “Thus ur device can supply clean drinking water even at remte places.” The small, adaptable flat-bdied device was designed at Switzerland’s EPFL research institute, by a team led by Prf. Laszl6 Frró.
Water enters via a tube in the tp, flws thrugh a multilayer cmpsite (复合的) material sandwiched between tw sheets f glass, and exits thrugh a tube in the bttm. The cmpsite material is made up f titanium dixide nanwires (TDN,二氧化钛纳米线) interwven with carbn nantubes. When the filter is expsed t sunlight, the UV light causes the cmpsite t prduce a grup f mlecules (分子) knwn as reactive xygen species. These mlecules are highly effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses. Its ptential challenge when wrking utdrs is rainy r cludy days.
The filter has already been successfully tested n water cntaining E. cli bacteria, with results indicating that it shuld als have n prblem ridding f ther harmful bacteria. In fact, it is believed that the technlgy may als prve effective at ridding f micr- pllutants such as pesticides and drug remains. It shuld be nted that when activated by UV light, titanium dixide nanwires n their wn are capable f killing harmful viruses and bacteria. Fr that matter, even UV light alne can purify water, if the water is left sitting in the sunlight in a transparent cntainer.
Hwever, Prf. Frró tld us that his team’s filter is much mre effective — this is due in part t the carbn nantubes’’ ability t absrb heat frm the sunlight, making the purificatin prcess faster. The present small-scale mdel can treat 2 liters (0.5 gal) f water per day, althugh that figure wuld rise cnsiderably if the technlgy were t be scaled up.
32. Why can the new filter wrk at remte areas?
A. It is small and flat-shaped. B. It can be pwered by sunlight.
C. It’s designed by famus scientists. D. It can be efficient in cleaning water.
33. Which aspects f filter des paragraph 2 mainly fcus n?
A. Wrking cnditins. B. Appearance and pssible effects.
C. Strengths and weaknesses. D. Structure and wrking prcess.
34. What can we learn frm paragraph 3?
A. UV light is able t purify the water in transparent cntainers.
B. TDN can kill viruses withut being activated by UV light.
C. The filter is able t get rid f a lt f drugs in the water.
D. The filter can kill all kinds f bacteria f the water.
35. What’s the authr ‘s purpse f writing the passage?
A. T intrduce a slar-driven water filter. B.T state a new functin f UV light.
C. T infrm the discvery f a new material. D. T stress the effectiveness f a water filter.
