Out n an unrelated call, Buhler sptted and apprached what she recalled was a nticeably scared puppy emerging frm the dump. “I knelt dwn and just said, ‘Oh, cme here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was s scared, but she came right up t me, and I was able t put her in my track.” The pair headed t the cunty animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and thers didn’t knw that 3,200 kilmeters away, Hllywd was lking fr a dg t play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michn. The find-a-Bella jb went t freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miller. Her missin was t search shelters natinwide fr a dg that culd play Bella. One day, Miller sptted Baby Girl’s adptin pht. “Hnestly, it was a really gd picture, and she was flat-ut smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her n persnality and the ability t respnd t simple cmmands. After assessment, she adpted Baby Girl frm the shelter, renamed her Shelby and tk her t Califrnia fr training. Miller and Shelby trained fr just ver three mnths befre filming began. Then they were tgether each day n the set.
Mst f the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s perfrmance. Variety made the cmments “an amazing dg, perfect perfrmance!”
Shelby has cme a lng way frm the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently and needed nly a secnd t cmpare the mvie star with the dg she fund frm piles f rubbish. “She is exactly the same,” Buhler said.

Fr the study, the researchers recruited 2,635 adults wh agreed t receive texts at any time during the day. The texts began with a happiness questin, which asked the participants t tell hw they felt “right nw”, ranging frm very bad t very gd. Half f them were then asked if they had made a material purchase within the past hur, such as clthing r electrnic gds. The thers were asked if they had made an experimental purchase within the past hur, such as eating in a restaurant r attending a cncert.
The researchers fund that the purchasers f the experiences express higher levels f happiness than the purchasers f the material gds, n matter hw much the purchases cst.
T deal with pssible differences in types f purchasers, the researchers carried ut a secnd study in which they researched mre than 5,000 adults. “We still fund the same result,” said Amit Kumar, the study’s lead authr.
“If yu want t be happier, it might be wise t shift sme f yur spending away frm material gds and a bit mre twards experiences,” Kumar said. “That wuld prbably lead t greater happiness.”

T find ut their purchasing behaviur and feelings.

Mnkeys seem t have a way with numbers.
A team f researchers trained three Rhesus mnkeys t assciate 26 clearly different symbls cnsisting f numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drps f water r juice as a reward. The researchers then tested hw the mnkeys cmbined—r added—the symbls t get the reward.
Here’s hw Harvard Medical Schl scientist Margret Livingstne, wh led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the mnkeys were prvided with tuch screens. On ne part f the screen, a symbl wuld appear, and n the ther side tw symbls inside a circle were shwn. Fr example, the number 7 wuld flash n ne side f the screen and the ther end wuld have 9 and 8. If the mnkeys tuched the left side f the screen they wuld be rewarded with seven drps f water r juice; if they went fr the circle, they wuld be rewarded with the sum f the numbers—17 in this example.
After running hundreds f tests, the researchers nted that the mnkeys wuld g fr the higher values mre than half the time, indicating that they were perfrming a calculatin, nt just memrizing the value f each cmbinatin.
When the team examined the results f the experiment mre clsely, they nticed that the mnkeys tended t underestimate(低估) a sum cmpared with a single symbl when the tw were clse in value—smetimes chsing, fr example, a 13 ver the sum f 8 and 6. The underestimatin was systematic: When adding tw numbers, the mnkeys always paid attentin t the larger f the tw, and then added nly a factin(小部分) f the smaller number f it.
“This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains,” Dr. Livingstne says. “But in this experiment what they’re ding is paying mre attentin t the big number than the little ne.”
What did the researchers d t the mnkeys befre testing them?
A.They fed them.B.They named them.C. They trained them.D.They measured them.
Hw did the mnkeys get their reward in the experiment?
    By drawing a circle.B.By tuching a screen.
C.By watching vides.D.By mixing tw drinks.
What did Livingstne’s team find abut the mnkeys?
They culd perfrm basic additin.B.They culd understand simple wrds.
C.They culd hld the attentin fr lng.D.They culd memrize numbers easily.
