My schl life never really amunted t much. I didn’t g n t higher educatin and my early wrking life was slppy (马虎的), at best. Much f this was due t my disinterest in the wrk I was ding. I wrked in factries, shps, warehuses and even a castle. I was always unsettled and uninspired. I never knew hw t channel my interest and passin fr nature int a paying jb. Wildlife and nature had been part f my life since my yuth. I remember my childhd with great fndness: I wuld read bird bks, paint fact files fr each species and get lst in the natural wrld.
In 2014, the pprtunity I s badly needed finally appeared a paid training with Durham Wildlife Trust. I was given all the basic skills and training fr habitat cntrl, wildlife surveys and grund management wrks. In Octber 2015, I became the reserve warden fr the Wildfwl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), where I stayed fr just under half a decade. As happy as I was, new pprtunities dared me t dream even bigger. The time had cme t take my next step, t cntinue t grw within my career.
S, this is where I am nw: living in the middle f a nature reserve, with glden eagles, red deer and hen harriers as neighbrs. I feel as if I’m the luckiest man alive.

There is smething t be said fr being a generalist, even if yu are a specialist. Knwing a little abut a lt f things that interest yu can add t the richness f a whle, well-lived life.
Sciety pushes us t specialize, t becme experts. This requires cmmitment t a particular ccupatin, branch f study r research. Things are cnnected. Let yur expertise in ne field fuel yur passins in all related areas. Sme f yur interests may nt appear t be cnnected but, nce yu explre their depths, yu discver that they are. My editr Tni, wh is als a writer, has edited several histry bks. Fascinated by the structural beauty f the Frbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested t learn mre abut Chinese philsphy. “I dn’t knw where it will lead, but I’m excited I’m n this pursuit. ”
These expansins int new wrlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin t see the intercnnectedness f ne thing t anther in all aspects f ur life, f urselves and the universe. Develp brad, general knwledge and experience. The universe is all yurs t explre and enjy.

New research suggests that ne night f sleep with just a small amunt f light may have negative effects n health.
The small, 20-persn study cnducted by Dr. Phyllis Zee, directr f the Center fr Circadian (生理节奏的) and Sleep Medicine, was designed t measure the physilgical effects f 100 lux (照度) f artificial light n healthy adults while they were sleeping. Fr the study, all the participants spent their first night sleeping in a mstly dark rm. The next night, half f them slept in a better lit rm. Meanwhile, the researchers ran tests n the sleepers: brainwaves, heart rates and bld. In the mrning, they’d give bth grups a large amunt f sugar t see hw well their systems respnded t it.
The grup expsed t the light had raised heart rates thrughut the night, and als had truble getting their bld sugar int a nrmal range.
These changes suggest the small amunt f light was enugh t shift the nervus system t a mre excited and alert state. “It’s almst like the brain and the heart knew that the lights were n, althugh the individual was sleeping,” says Zee.
While the findings f this study alne can’t predict what wuld happen in the lng term, Dr. Clwell suspects the harmful effects wuld be cumulative: “This was nly ne night, s imagine if yu’ re living that way cnstantly?”
“That’s ging t increase the risk f lng-term diseases,” says Dr. Charles Czeisler whse research has lked at the cnsequences f circadian rhythm sleep disrder fr lnger than just ne night. He cncluded that the unpleasant effects were primarily because f the “internal clck” being disturbed — nt necessarily because f the lack f sleep.
This is nt t say that the lack f sleep desn’t als have negative effects n health — it des — but he says it simply stresses the lasting cnsequences f being expsed t light at nighttime.
“Peple think that as lng as they fall asleep and are uncnscius, it’s nt having physilgical effects, but that’s simply nt true,” Czeisler says.
    32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly abut?
    A. Hw the study is carried ut.B. What type f light affects sleep.
    C. Wh is in charge f the research.D. Why light and sleep are cnnected.
    33. What d we knw abut the new research?
    A. Light plays a critical rle in regulating circadian rhythm.
    B. A small amunt f light at night is linked with sleep depth.
    C. Leaving the bedrm lights n leads t mental disrder.
D Sleeping with a little bit f light isn’t gd fr yur health.
    34. What des the underlined wrd “cumulative” in Paragraph 5 mean?
    A Cmmn.B. Slight.C. Increasing.D. Accidental.
    35. Which f the fllwing might Czeisler agree with?
    A. The mre yu sleep, the healthier yu will be.
    B. Physilgical effects disappear with a sund sleep.
    C. Sleep quality lies in hw yu feel abut the sleep.
    D. It is the circadian rhythm sleep disrder that matters.

My heart beat wildly as I stared at my phne screen. I re-read the message frm my friend, Jane. Smene had upset her by sharing her persnal news: she had been refused by her dream schl. Jane had shared the sad news with nly a few peple. She didn’t knw wh let the wrd ut, but she was really hurt and disappinted.
I felt s bad. I knew hw the news had gtten ut because I had been the ne t tell smene beynd her clsest friends. Hnestly, I hadn’t realized she meant t keep it s clse t nly a few in the first place, but at the same time I’d knwn it wasn’t a gd idea when I started t tell it t smene else.
Did she really nt knw it was me? It wuld have been easy t admit what I had dne and aplgize if her message put the blame, specifically, n me. But it read as thugh it had been cpied and sent t several peple. Once again ignring the right chice, I chse the cward’s (懦夫) way ut instead.
“I’m s srry fr what happened t yu,” I typed. “Hw awful that yur cnfidence was brken!”
I hped that wuld wrk. Her reply came back within secnds: “Thank yu.”
“It wuld be kay fr me t remain annymus (匿名), wuldn’t it?” I thught t myself.
But, deep dwn, I knew I’d been the ne t break faith and hurt her. I was ashamed, nt nly f my riginal actin, but als because I’d taken a further step in the wrng directin by cvering it up.
I felt painful at church n Sunday, sitting in silence all the time. Later, the speaker asked us t examine urselves and see if anything std in the way f hlding n t ur faith, and if s, nt t let anything stp us until we cleared it away. Chancing it all — whatever we feared, whatever held us back — wuld be wrth it t make it right.
