Everyone has their favourite Bond songs with the 007 movies offering so many different musical outings over the years from classic rock and pop to soul and even dance. Let us know in the comments.
Golden Eye — Tina Turner
Golden Eye (1995)
Golden Eye sees a cat-like Turner wandering about throughout its sound stage, flashing her claws where necessary. Its sweeping arrangement and sentimental brass (感伤的铜管乐) contribute to a powerful vocal performance. The strings are mixed with horns that sound like a passing train. This is effortless singing from Turner and her amazing control is a joy to hear.
Tomorrow Never Dies — Sheryl Crow
Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
This rock/pop little number has always felt rather clear to the listeners. It is a bit Bond-aping (邦德式模仿) rather than creating something new all by itself, which is what it should ideally be aiming for. Crow gives it her all with her soft voice.
You Know My Name — Chris Cornell
Casino Royal (2006)
Right from the brilliantly exciting intro, the whole track just sounds so strong, as if it was chiseled (镌刻) out of the very finest stone. A lot of this is down to Chris Cornell’s powerful and deeply rich voice. One of the greatest singers of his generation, he absolutely nails this track.
Writing’s On The Wall — Sam Smith
Spectre (2015)
The title theme that most people can’t actually remember. By all accounts, Sam Smith’s Writing’s On The Wall was written very quickly, and frankly, it shows. Far from being a terrible song, it just lacks basically everything that a Bond theme needs. Sure, it certainly feels empty.
1. Who gives an impression of joy to hear through his/her voice?
A. Tina Turner. B. Sheryl Crow.
C. Chris Cornell. D. Sam Smith.
2. How does the song Tomorrow Never Dies sound to the listeners?
A. Sweet. B. Strong. C. Gentle. D. Terrible.
3. Which song lacks a Bond theme according to the author?
A. Golden Eye.
B. Tomorrow Never Dies.
C. You Know My Name.
D. Writing’s On The Wall.

I was very thrilled to go to camp the year I turned 11 — the first time I would venture so far from home. Leading up to the date, I convinced my mother I was ready to go for two whole weeks.
Finally, the day came. We reached the camp after a six-hour drive. After registering and meeting my counselor, I waved my mom away with confidence, eager to take the swim test and start having fun. Camp was more than I had imagined: crafts and games; singing and swimming; making bracelets (手镯) for new friends; listening to our counselor read to us before falling asleep to the sound of rain on a metal roof.
When the weekend arrived, there was a luncheon (午宴) for visiting parents and families. I met some of my camp mates’ relatives, then suck away with a sandwich. I went down to the dock to watch the water bugs skate across the surface of the lake. My counselor came and companionably beside me. She quietly asked me if I was okay. I told her it was too far for my family to visit.
I remember not looking at her or saying anything for what seemed like a long time. It felt like talking might change the magic of the place. But I also wanted her to know me just a little better, so I told her that my dad had died only a few weeks before whispering “cancer”, just like I had heard the adults say it.
She put her arm around my shoulder, and we sat for a while longer. It felt like she understood.
Summer camp gave me the opportunity to be an ordinary kid for a brief time that year — just a girl learning, laughing and having fun like everyone else.
4. What was the author’s feeling on hearing about her first adventure?

A. She had trouble with communicating.
B. She was unwilling to be visited by parents.
C. She lived a happy childhood before the camp.
D. She was treated by her counselor in a kind way.
7. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A personal blog.
B. A healthy magazine.
C. A fiction on childhood.
D. A summer camp brochure.

C
A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. An instructor read outnumbers — 74,470, 70,809, 98,402 — and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (珠算). Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problems.
From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads, so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.
Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry. But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily in the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and outcomes appear to move in step.
My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once baffled her, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.
8. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To prove the difficulty of math.
B. To introduce the topic of the abacus.
C. To show the high intelligence of Stevenson.
D. To stress the importance of abacus learning.
9. What do we know about the author from paragraph 3?
A. He was weak in math. B. He was good at computer.
C. He regarded math as useful. D. He had a close relationship with kids.
10. What does the author realize from his learning experience?
A. Knowledge starts with practice. B. It’s never too late to learn.
C. Faith can move mountains. D. Practice makes perfect.
11. What does the underlined word “baffled” in the last paragraph mean?
A. bored B. inspired C. confused D. interested
B 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.(对于每一个问题,她都闭上眼睛,然后她右手的手指开始移动。她正确地回答了大部分问题)”以及第二段“The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus.(她成功的关键是一种叫做算盘的古老技术)”可推知,第一段的主要目的是引出算盘这个主题。
根据第三段“From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skills on the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads, so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who held some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear of math. My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.(通过观察史蒂文森,我知道掌握珠算技能不仅仅是数珠子,所以我决定和我的两个女儿报名参加一个珠算课程,看看我们是否也能提高我们的数学技能。我是许多对数学有疑虑的人之一,我对数学有一丝恐惧。我的典型解决方案是回避,如果我必须计算一个百分比变化,我会上网)”可推知,作者的数学不好。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry. But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus.(经过几节算盘课和大量的练习,数学似乎没那么可怕了。我没有成为欧几里得,几何学的奠基人。但这种做法消除了我对数字的恐惧。这是一种久经考验的算盘的力量)”可推知,作者从他的学习经历中意识到熟能生巧。故选D。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.(对他们来说,这些只是小小的成功,但这就是她们最终建立自信的方式)”以及画线词上文“My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once baffled her (孩子们也从算盘中收获良多,最小的女儿也解开了曾经 自己的数学题)”可知,孩子们学算盘学的不错,获得成功,可得出最小的女儿也解开了曾经困惑自己的数学题,故画线词意思是“困惑”。故选C。
D
Confucius, a famous teacher , was a politician and philosopher who lived in “Spring and Autumn Period”. During his lifetime, he planted the seeds for China’s transformation by teaching thousands of people. Today, he is thought to be one of the world’s greatest teachers.
Confucius grew up in a poor family. As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother earn money. When he wasn’t working, he would read. His favorite thing to do was to learn. His mother saw this and did her best to help him learn. One day, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs counting their money and keeping track of their crops.
Confucius did this until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more. He didn’t like the way rulers treated their subjects. He wanted to find a way to help people who were less fortunate than he was. Later, he founded the philosophy “Confucianism”. Confucianism states that by educating yourself, loving your family, and respecting tradition you could become a better person. Confucius believed a person could achieve these things by practicing self-discipline. For the rest of his life, Confucius traveled and taught the people of China about self-discipline and the importance of education. He even opened China’s first school that taught both the poor and the wealthy as equals. Although he became very famous among China’s lower classes, the rulers of China never accepted his teachings. Eventually, his philosophy of self-discipline helped China unite under one ruler and finally find peace. Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over war, money, and injustice.
