I love winter birds and I love photographing them in snow. I admit that I’m a fair-weather bird watcher. Worse, I’m a lazy, fair-weather bird watcher. I don’t like weather extremes, so when it’s very hot or really cold, it is hard to get me to leave the comfortable home. In summer, I only photograph hummingbirds (蜂鸟) in my yard, and in winter, I try to only go out on relatively mild (温和的) days. Most of my bird pictures are done within an hour’s drive of my hometown of Elmira. So it’s all about finding a balance that works.

The winter of 2021 was a great period for snowy owls (雪鸮) here in Woolwich Township. One day in early January, I was on my way home from work when I noticed a beautiful snowy owl sitting in a tree right at the crossing. I pulled over to admire him, and then kept heading home unwillingly.

Two hundred meters or so down the road, there were two more snowy owls in a field by a fence, and in the next field over, another on top of a fence post. I couldn’t find words to express my feelings at that moment. Thus I rushed home, took my camera and went right back out to get some pictures. It was one of the most magical local birding moments I’ve ever experienced.

When I’m looking for excellent opportunities to photograph snowy owls and other birds without spending dozens of hours searching for them, I head to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy (CRC) or the Mountsberg Raptor Centre. I’ve attended so many photo sessions at each of these fantastic places that I’ve lost count of.

    4. What factor (因素) has the most effect on whether the author goes out to photograph birds or not?

    A. road conditions. B. personal emotions.

    C. weather conditions. D. time arrangement.

    5. How did the author feel when he saw the snowy owls on his way home?

    A. awkward. B. excited.

    C. anxious. D. confused.

    6. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Photographing winter birds is gaining great popularity.

    B. The author prefers to have the pictures done over an hour’s drive from his hometown.

    C. The author only heads to CRC to photograph snowy owls.

    D. There were four snowy owls on his way home, one day in early January.

    7. What can we infer about the author?

    A. The author only photographs snowy owls.

    B. The author can take excellent photos easily.

    C. The author makes a living by photographing birds.

    D. The author values each chance to photograph birds.

    C

Researchers at the University of Alabama in Birmingham suggest that brainwave-sensing headsets (耳麦), also known as EEG headsets, need to do more to protect users after a study which shows hackers (黑客) could guess a user’s bank account passwords by monitoring his brainwaves.

Nitesh Saxena, Ph.D., professor in the UAB College of Computer and Information Sciences Department, and his team found that a person who stopped a video game and entered into a bank account while wearing an EEG headset was at a risk for having his passwords stolen by a bad software program. Saxena and his team used one EEG headset that could be bought by customers online to show how easily an ill software program could eavesdrop on a user’s brainwaves. While typing, a user’s inputs meet with their visual processing, as well as hand, eye and head muscle movements. All these movements are caught by EEG headsets.

The team asked 12 people to type passwords into a text box as if they were entering into an online account while wearing an EEG headset in order for the software to train itself on the user’s typing and the present brainwave. The team found that, after a user entered passwords within the ill software program that could make educated guesses about the passwords, the user entered by reading the EEG data recorded. It increased the chance of guessing a six-letter password from one in 500,000 to one in 5.

“Given the growing popularity of EEG headsets and the different ways in which they could be used, they will become part of our daily lives,” Saxena said. “It is important to study the possible risks together with this new technology to raise users’ attention to the risks and develop solutions to the bad attacks.” One possible solution suggested by Saxena and his team is the insertion (插入) of noises anytime a user types a password while wearing an EEG headset.

    8. How do hackers guess passwords of a user’s bank account?

    A. They use a software program.

    B. They use a new-type computer.

    C. They guess the user’s brainwaves.

    D. They talk with the user on the net.

    9. The underlined words “eavesdrop on” in Paragraph 2 refer to “________”.

    A. make full use of B. watch carefully

    C. record or write down D. gain or get secretly

    10. What was the result of the research of Saxena and his team in Paragraph 3?

    A. They made a very exact answer.

    B. They got close to the passwords.

    C. They got a part of the passwords.

    D. They failed to get the passwords.

    11. Why do EEG headsets need to do more to develop solutions?

    A. More and more hackers come about.

    B. More people use online bank accounts.

    C. EEG headsets will become more popular.

    D. EEG headsets still have problems in quality.

    D

Siesta is a Spanish word referring to a nap or rest break usually after lunch. The word “siesta” comes from the Latin base “sexta, which means sixth and refers to the sixth hour, or “sexta hora”, of daylight.

By definition a siesta takes place six hours after dawn, if the sun rises at 7 am, the “sexta hora” would take place just after noon. However, most people do not time their siesta so literally. Traditionally, a siesta takes place after lunch in the mid afternoon. A small Spanish town called Ador, which still practices a daily siesta, closes all businesses between 2 pm and 5 pm each day. Historically, Spanish companies that built a two-hour break into the workday schedule made the working day end around 8 pm, a practice that continues among many Spanish workers today.

Although most people connect the siesta with Spain, its actual birthplace is Italy. Similar midday nap breaks are common around Mediterranean(地中海)and in many Latin American countries, where the midday is often hot. Before air conditioning was invented, the siesta offered a much-needed break from the hottest hours of the day.

In recent years, former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy introduced a plan to end the siesta, which would allow many workers to end their workdays earlier, making Spain’s standard work schedule at the same level with its European neighbors.

Although not a widespread practice, some countries outside of the Mediterranean area currently encourage midday napping. For example, parts of Japan have provided nap pods for midday breaks, and falling asleep at work is viewed as a positive sign that a person is working hard. In the US, some sleep researchers are trying to spread the concept of a power nap, which would allow people to briefly(短暂地)sleep while they are at work.

    12. Why are businesses closed between 2 pm and 5 pm in the town of Ador?

    A. It is the hottest time of the day. B. It goes with its European neighbors.

    C. Local people have a daily siesta. D. It is a positive sign of working hard.

    13. What can we infer from the practice of siesta around the Mediterranean countries?

    A. The culture of siesta started from Spain.

    B. The custom comes from the need of daily life.

    C. Air-conditioners are a must in hot areas.

    D. Nap breaks are popular around the world.

    14. Why did Spain intend to end the siesta practice?

    A. To have a standard European work schedule.

    B. There is no need to have a midday break now.

    C. Spain is not one of the Mediterranean countries.

    D. To stop workers from working too long.

    15. What can be the best title of the passage?

    A. The advantages of midday napping B. The popularity of siesta in Spain

    C. The reasons to end siestas D. A brief history of siesta

A Mother’s Heartfelt Note of Love

Everything seemed to have changed for me when I entered high school. I never saw a single person I knew from middle school. At home I was just as lonely. “My brothers and sister all fit in.” I thought, coming in the door after another bad day at school. “Why can’t I?”

Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean?” The last thing I needed was criticism from my mother. What had happened to the mother who used to snuggle (依偎) with me on the sofa, loving me with complete acceptance? Who thought everything I did was wonderful? I didn’t bother trying to explain my unhappiness. It was easier to hide in my bedroom, without saying a word, like I did every afternoon.

Clearing off some space, I sat down at my desk. Yet another thing I wasn’t good at anymore. My grades had slipped along with my confidence. I turned to a new page in my notebook and started working out the first problem. Almost immediately, I saw I’d made a mistake. “Wrong again!” I thought. “You can’t do anything right!” I tore the paper out of my notebook, balled it up in my fist and threw it at the wastepaper basket. The ball landed on the floor. I heard my mother’s voice in my head, “Why can’t you keep your room clean?”

By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled (弄皱的) paper. It gave me a kind of satisfaction to see the mess I’d made. Like it was proof of all my shortcomings. Every time I looked at those crumpled balls, I reminded myself what a failure I was. But my unhappiness stayed hidden away, just like those mistakes. With my face a mask of indifference, no one knew what I was really feeling. Who would want to listen?

One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief not to be met with Mom’s latest complaint. “Nothing I do is right in her eyes.” I thought. “Or anyone else’s, including mine.”

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

When I opened my bedroom door, I froze at the sight of a neat and orderly room.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I sat down at my desk staring at those words.
