When I was in primary school, I was actually a little shy. One thing that really frightened me was speaking in front of many people, whether strangers or acquaintances (熟人). It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Bamick, who helped me get past that. That year we had to make four oral (口头的) book reports in front of the class. Some of the kids were even glad to do it, but I was scared to death. Mr. Bamick recognized my fear, so be told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me. So I did the first report on baseball.
When it came time for me to present it to the class, Mr. Bamick cut me some slack and let me read the report rather than give it from memory. Some of my classmates laughed at me, but Mr. Bamick defended (为……辩解) me. By the end of the year I had completed all four of the oral book reports. It wasn’t easy or comfortable for me, but I did it.
Years later I realized that Mr. Bamick did me a great favor in sixth grade. One of the chances I got when I won a tennis tournament (锦标赛) was to make comments to the fans who attended the match. Some of those were carried live on television and all of them were before thousands of people. It was still not one of my favorite things to do, but, with Mr. Bamick’s help, I got through it from time to time. Before long, I was asked to bring my favorite childhood teacher to a national event in Dallas. 1 was excited when Mr. Bamick joined me for the event. It meant a lot to me that he was there.
Mr. Bamick believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. It was he who helped me build the person I became.
    4. In what aspect (方面) did Mr. Bamick help the writer?
    A. Improving her learning skills.
    B. Encouraging her to read more books.
    C. Winning her classmates’ recognition.
    D. Overcoming her fear of public speaking.
    5. What does the underlined part “cut me some slack” mean in paragraph 2?
    A. Played a funny joke on the writer.
    B. Gave the writer a feeling of pride.
    C. Made the task a little easier for the writer.
    D. Asked the writer to take part in a competition.
    6. What do we know about the writer?
    A. She was a tennis player.
    B. She wanted to be a teacher.
    C. She liked public speaking best.
    D. She enjoyed commenting on books.
    7. In the writer’s mind, what kind of teacher is Mr. Bamick?
    A. Strict. B. Curious.
    C. Encouraging. D. Frightening.
D 5. C 6. A 7. C
Bamick recognized my fear, so be told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me. (Bamick先生意识到了我的恐惧,所以他让我写一篇关于我真正感兴趣的一本书的报告。)”以及第三段中“Some of those were carried live on television and all of them were before thousands of people. It was still not one of my favorite things to do, but, with Mr. Bamick’s help, I got through it from time to time. (其中一些在电视上进行了现场直播,而且都是在数千人面前进行的。这仍然不是我喜欢做的事情之一,但在Bamick先生的帮助下,我时不时地克服了它。)”可知,Bamick先生帮助作者克服对公开演讲的恐惧。故选D项。
    【5题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句后文“Some of my classmates laughed at me, but Mr. Bamick defended me. (我的一些同学嘲笑我,但Bamick先生为我辩护。)”说明Bamick先生为作者的不特别优秀的表现辩解。再根据划线词句后半部分“let me read the report rather than give it from memory(让我读报告,而不是凭记忆作报告)”可知,Bamick先生把作报告的任务变得简单了。从而推知划线词句“When it came time for me to present it to the class, Mr. Bamick cut me some slack (当我要向全班报告的时候,Bamick先生cut me some slack)”其中划线短语应为“使任务对作者来说变得更简单”的意思。
根据第三段中“One of the chances I got when I won a tennis tournament (锦标赛) was to make comments to the fans who attended the match. (当我赢得网球锦标赛时,我得到的一个机会就是向参加比赛的球迷发表评论。)”可知,作者是一名网球运动员。故选A项。
Bamick recognized my fear, so be told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me. (Bamick先生意识到了我的恐惧,所以他让我写一篇关于我真正感兴趣的一本书的报告。)”和第三段中“It was still not one of my favorite things to do, but, with Mr. Bamick’s help, I got through it from time to time. (这仍然不是我喜欢做的事情之一,但在Bamick先生的帮助下,我时不时地克服了它。)”以及最后一段中“Mr. Bamick believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. (Bamick先生相信我,帮助我相信自己。)”可以推知,在作者眼中,Bamick先生是个给人鼓励,鼓舞人心的老师。故选C项。
    C
High school is difficult for everyone. You are going through an awkward time and you may either fit in (适应) right away or feel like a complete outcast. But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to the school. Joining a club forces you to communicate with people who have similar interests as you. Even if you are the shyest and quietest person, you are sure to develop a relationship with at least one person in the club that you decide to join. Speaking from personal experience, I have met some of my best friends from my extra-curricular activities and had many new doors open to me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that doing activities looks good on college applications. Being known as outgoing is a highly valued trait (特质); it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there, be determined, and best of all try new things. Another nice thing is that (depending on the activity) it could help you develop skills that you could use during a college interview.
Productivity is something that teens seem to continuously have a problem with. Most teens go to school and then come home and spend the rest of the day in front of the television or phone, but activities prevent this. Teens are also very easy to influence and if they fall in with the wrong crowd they may have to face consequences (后果) such as problems with the law. Clubs are a great place to spend time and be with good people who you can fall back on if you need them.
Maybe the most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefit (益处) it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people keeping an eye on the time, and being organized are things you will use every single day of your life.
    8. What do colleges think highly of according to the text?
    A. The number of clubs you have joined.
    B. The strong relationships you have built.
    C. The bright personality you have developed.
    D. The skills you have learned while forming a club.
    9. What benefit of joining a club is talked about in paragraph 4?
    A. Increasing knowledge. B. Developing teamwork skills.
    C. Improving your fitness level. D. Making good use of your time.
    10. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the text?
    A. B.
    C. D.
    11. What is the purpose of this text?
    A. To help readers fit into high school.
    B. To share his club experience with readers.
    C. To encourage readers to join a high school club.
D To introduce the benefits of joining a club at high school.
C 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据文章第三段关键句“Another really nice thing about joining a club is that doing activities looks good on college applications. Being known as outgoing is a highly valued trait; it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there, be determined, and best of all try new things.”(参加社团的另一个好处是,参加活动在申请大学时看起来很不错。
根据文章第四段关键句“Productivity is something that teens seem to continuously have a problem with. Most teens go to school and then come home and spend the rest of the day in front of the television or phone, but activities prevent this.”(效率是青少年似乎一直存在的问题。
文章第一段关键句“But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.”(但是不管你有多适应(或不适应),加入一个俱乐部在短期和长期都对你有好处)总起下文,表示加入俱乐部有很多好处;第二、三、四、五段分别具体介绍了好处的四个方面:结交新朋友,培养外向的品质,培养高效,了解学习以外的东西。
根据文章第一段关键句“High school is difficult for everyone.”(高中对每个人来说都是困难的)及“But no matter how well you may fit in (or not), joining a club will be good for you in the short term and long term.”(但是不管你有多适应(或不适应),加入一个俱乐部在短期和长期都对你有好处)并结合下文几段具体介绍了好处的四个方面可知,作者写这篇文章是为了鼓励读者加入高中社团。故选C项。
    D
Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fl1y-out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage (比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional (情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base (基地,大本营) from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower”, as a gift, whose quiet and steady (稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
    12. What did the study find about the 618 teens?
A They had more dinners with their parents.
    B. They were more prepared to help themselves.
    C. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
    D. They were more likely (可能的) to have trouble with their feelings.
    13. What is the author’s attitude to her two friends’ behaviour?
    A. She doubts them.
    B. She supports them.
    C. She is worried about them.
    D. She cares little about them.
    14. What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 5?
    A. They want their parents’ presence.
    B. They want their parents to be safe.
    C. They want more freedom from parents..
    D. They show more interest in new activities.
    15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Teens Want Potted Plant Parents
    B. Your Kids Still Need Conversation
    C. Quiet Families Raise Healthier Teenagers
    D. Parents Know Little About Today’s Teenagers
D 13. B 14. A 15. A
根据文章第二段关键句“A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours.”(与父母工作时间较传统的青少年相比,父母长时间不在身边的青少年有情绪或行为问题的比例更高。)
根据文章第四段关键句“One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.”(我的一个朋友每天晚上安静地在她的孩子们看电视的客厅里做家务。
根据文章第五段关键句“In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world.”(事实上,多年的研究表明,孩子们把父母当作他们探索世界的安全基地。)及“Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around.”(也许我们十几岁的孩子和婴儿一样,父母在身边时感到最自在。) 故选A项。
根据文章第三段内容“Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted plant.”(研究结果还表明,父母不必一直待在家里才能参与孩子的生活,但在某些时候待在家里会有所帮助。 故选A项。
A study session with friends can be an excellent way to learn. If you make it a regular event (e.g. weekly), a study session can help you to fully understand difficult material, prepare for exams, and finally earn strong grades. By making careful choices when you are forming the group, you can be sure your study session with friends will be successful.
    • Teach one another. One of the most effective (有效的) ways to learn is actually to teach other people. ____16____ This greatly benefits both the “teacher” as well as the whole group.
    • Take quizzes. Another great aspect of working with a group is the ability to quiz one another. ____17____ This means quizzing one another orally. Or, different members can create quizzes for different parts and give them to the other members to take.

Hurriedly, Melissa came running to Rocky’s house out of breath. “Come with me quickly! There is a dog near the shrubs behind my house which is barking loudly. I think something is wrong with him. Let’s go and see what happened,” said Mel.
After putting down the book he was reading, Rocky went with Mel and saw a small dog trying to untangle himself from the shrubs. Being unable to set himself free, he thought barking would help him. Seeing this, Rocky and Mel immediately helped him out and he walked with a limp. Just then, Jason, Jenny, and Lindsay walked towards them.
“Hi, whose dog is this?” asked Lindsay, “We don’t know. I heard him barking and called Rocky to help him come out of the shrubs,” replied Mel. “He has cuts on his body and is bleeding,” observed Jenny.
“What should we do?” questioned Mel. “He hasn’t got a collar around his neck so I suppose he is a stray dog. Let’s hand him over to the center for stray animals,” said Jason.
The friends took him to the center. The vet treated his wounds and gave him some milk. When the friends were about to leave, the dog looked at them with sad eyes and barked softly. Jason went to him and said, “Rest up, old fellow. We will come to visit you soon.”
A few days later, the friends visited the center and met the stray dog. He ran to them barking happily. They played with the dog that they named Bruno. After half an hour, the friends returned home.
The next morning, Rocky said, “Today is ‘World Animal Day’. Let’s go and meet Bruno.” The friends walked to the center and saw that Bruno was wearing a collar with the words “Brave Bruno” written on it. They were all surprised at this and wondered why he was wearing such a collar.
