John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas City in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.
Luckily, he had a strong-willed, caring mother. John remembers that his mother told him many times, “Son, you can be anything you really want to be if you just believe. She told him not to be dependent on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success,” said she. “All the people who work hard don’t succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”
These words came from a woman less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don’t mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son, who was then 15, to Chicago.
Chicago in1933 was not the promised land (乐土、希望之地) that black southerners were looking for, John’s mother and stepfather could not find work. But there John could go to school, and there he learned the power of words — as editor of the newspaper and yearbook of Du Stable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.
While others discouraged him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by: “Nothing beats a failure but a try.” She also let him pawn (典当) her furniture to get the $500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.
It is natural the difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind. “Son, failure is not in your vocabulary.”
Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America — worth $150 million.
4. Why did John’s mother decide to move to Chicago? Because ________.
A. John’s father died in his hometown when he was very young
B. life was too hard for them to stay on in their hometown, while life in Chicago would be better for blacks
C. there were no schools for blacks in their hometown
D. John needed more education and he could go to school there
5. What kind of woman was John’s mother? She was a ________.
A. woman with little school education but knew a lot about life
B. woman who would not do anything for her son
C. strong woman with much knowledge
D. woman who didn’t know how to encourage her son
6. The underlined sentence in the fifth paragraph means ________.
A. if you try, you will succeed in the end
B. a failure is difficult to beat, even if you try
C. a try is always followed by failure
D. nothing but a try can help you out of failure
7. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How John H. Johnson became somebody.

C. The importance of a good education.
D. The key to success for blacks.

One Day, an anthology film (多段式电影) about easily-hurt children chasing their dreams, held a press conference to announce its release data on Wednesday afternoon in Beijing.
Set for September 10th, One day consists of nine short stories each focusing on one special group of children, such as the blind, those with intellectual disabilities, children who have been kidnapped and those whose parents work far away.
Produced by Huayi Brothers, a leading film production company, record label and talent agency in China, the film is one of the few non-commercial films in China heading to big screens nationwide this year.
According to Sun Amei, the main initiator (发起人) behind the film and person in Charge of the Huayi Brothers Foundation, One Day took 350 staff working over 900 days to finish while the film’s 12 stars including Zhou Xun, Wang Qianyuan, Xu Fan and Siqin Caowa have forgone any payment for their appearance in the film.
Advance ticket sales have already begun, with tickets priced as low as 5 yuan (about $0.8). Wang Zhonglei, CEO of Huayi Brothers, explained that ticket prices only cover the price of screening the film in theaters and that neither Huayi nor cinemas will turn in a profit from the film.
“There are many platforms a film can be released on, but only the big screen has the biggest charm,” Wang said at the press conference. He added that the film was not to call for economic support, as many of these vulnerable children can make a living by themselves when they grow up. “But they lack attention and understanding from society.” Wang stressed.
Sun said that One Day will not be their last film, as the foundation is planning to continue making films about these often ignored children.

It is a question people have been asking for ages. Is there a way to turn back the aging process?
For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth”. The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not age.
Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus (下丘脑). The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body.
Researchers at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that hypothalamus neural (神经的) stem cells also influence how fast aging takes place in the body.
What are stem cells(干细胞)? They are simple cells that can develop into specialized cells, like blood or skin cells. Stem cells can also repair damaged tissues and organs.
Dongsheng Cai is a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He was the lead researcher in a study on aging in mice. He and his team reported their findings in the journal Nature, Cai explained when hypothalamus function is in decline, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost. it eventually leads to aging.
Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate, or energize, the hypothalamus laboratory mice. They did this by injecting the animals with stem cells, Later, the researchers examined tissues and tested for changes in behavior. They looked for changes in the strength and coordination (协调) of the animals muscles. They also studied the social behavior and cognitive ability of the mice. The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals, Cai says injecting middle-aged mice with stem cells from younger mice helped the older animals live longer.
But these results were just from studying mice in a laboratory. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? The next step is to see if the anti-aging effects also work in.
12. In Paragraph 2 a “fountain of youth” is mentioned to ________.
A. introduce the main topic
B. show a hidden secret.
C. describe scientists research
D. recommend a way to stay young
13. Aging takes place in the body when _______.
A. stem cells develop into specialized cells
B. there are important activities within the body
C. hypothalamus neural stem cells fail to protect against aging
D. the hypothalamus fails to repair damaged tissues and organs
14. What do we know about the researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine from the text?
A. They did experiments to see how stem cells work.
B. They studied mice to find their connection with humans.
C. They have found a possible way to slow the aging progress.
D. They have found no changes in mice s behavior during the experiment
15. What will the researchers probably do next?
A. They will help some animals live longer.
B. They will announce the fountain of youth doesn’t exist
C. They will develop products to help people live a longer life immediately
D. They will do research to see if what they have found in mice will apply to humans.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. D

Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. ____16____: there's no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children's curiosity.
Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, I said, “Now that we've finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper (蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”____17____.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer,____18____. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers.
Thirdly,____19____. Once you have a child in a science discussion, don't jump in with “That's right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That's interesting” or coming up with more questions or ideas.
Lastly,____20____. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass (放大镜), and they'll understand why you want them to wash before dinner.
A. show; don't tell
B. watch your language
C. no time for a child to think
D. Never push a child to wait
E. Helping them enjoy science can be easy
F. children are always thinking without your telling them to
G. This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours

2.考查定语从句的引导词。句意:我是一个热爱阅读报纸的高中生,我想从报纸上学到一些东西。student后是定语从句,先行词student是人,因此关系代词用who/that,故将which改为who/that。

suggestion意为“建议”,其后的that从句是表语从句,从句中需用“sb. should do”的虚拟语气,其中should可省略,故将can改为should或去掉can。
10.考查形容词。句意:我的建议是在文化栏目中多介绍一些中国传统文化。修饰名词culture需用形容词,traditionally的形容词是traditional,意为“传统的”,故将traditionally改为traditional。

First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself.
