Recently, some small colorful felt (毛毡) flowers have appeared in a few cities in China. You may find them in places where there had earlier been cracks (裂缝), such as on walls or stone steps.
These artworks (艺术品) are part of a project called “Flowers to Mend.” It was started by Luo Shengtian, an art student in Guangzhou. In early April, he began using felt flowers to mend cracks in a village near his university.
Luo says it is not difficult to make such pieces of art. He usually makes a flower and a layer (层) of grass out of felt in advance (提前). After he arrives at the site (地点), he cleans the crack and fills it with clay (陶土). He then sticks the stem (茎) of the felt flower into the clay. And the final step is to cover the clay with the felt grass.
After Luo shared his project online, many people from different cities have joined him in his work. Some have used other materials, such as knitting thread (针织线) and pottery clay, to mend the cracks in their neighborhoods.

During my teen years, I wasn’t an outgoing (外向的) person at all. I was never interested in volunteering. I just thought it was something people who had a lot of free time did. My view of volunteering changed when I started university. I heard new friends talk about all the ways they had helped others and, in return, had improved themselves.
I started volunteering when I was 19 years old. As an English major (英语专业学生), I volunteered in kindergarten s to teach children English. Later, I realized I wasn’t getting anything new out of my volunteer service. I decided to move out of my comfort zone (舒适区). I volunteered at different art festivals. These opportunities helped me to greatly improve my organizational and communication skills.
The most important and life-changing volunteering experience for me came in the summer of 2019. It became clear to me that volunteering locally (在本地) was not enough. It was time for me to try volunteering abroad. I spent a month and a half in Romania (罗马尼亚) teaching English to children from poor families. That experience helped me to improve my teaching skills. It also completely changed me as a person. I met people from all over the world and learned to work together with them. Since then, I have made many international friends. These days, I am always able to do better than my colleagues (同事) whenever my job requires cross-cultural communication.
Volunteering is one of the best things you could ever do, both for yourself and for the people you are going to help along the way. Don’t ever hesitate to join the community of volunteers!

B. I decided to try something more difficult after teaching kindergarten kids.
C. Chances at art festivals didn’t changed me at all.

44. I am better at my job than other colleagues because ______.
A. I am an outgoing person all the time
B. it’s easy for me to communicate with children
C. experience from volunteering with international friends helps a lot
D. cross-cultural communication is necessary in my work
