【原文】M: Have you ever seen a small, red beetle(甲虫) with black dots on its back? These little insects, called ladybugs, are harmless to humans. A ladybug does not bite or sting humans. Ladybugs are also harmless to plants, and they do not carry diseases. But how did the ladybug get its name? There are many stories. One of these stories came from the Middle Ages. The crops were being eaten, and the villagers began praying. The red beetles with black dots came and ate the harmful insects. These beetles were named “the Beetles of Our Lady.” The name was shortened to lady beetles or ladybugs. Since then, the ladybug has been known to bring good luck. There are many beliefs about ladybugs from all over the world. It has been said that if a ladybug lands on a maiden’s hand, she will marry soon. In England, it has been said that if a farmer sees a ladybug, he will have a good harvest. Some people believe that the number of spots you see on a ladybug’s back will present the number of children you will have. Ladybugs today can still bring good fortune. If you have ladybugs in your garden, then you do not need to use insect poison to get rid of aphids(蚜虫). Aphids are tiny insects that are harmful to many plants. They suck the juice from the leaves of the plant. A ladybug can eat as many as 50 aphids in a day. Some people buy ladybugs to fight the aphids.

Papa, as a son of a poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There’s so much to learn. Though we’re born stupid, only the stupid remain that way,” he said. He was determined that none of his children would be denied education.
Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing every day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa’s requests. We would talk about the news of the day at dinner time: no matter how unimportant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comments, always to the point.
Then came the moment — the time to share the day’s new learning. “Felice, tell me what you have learned today,” he said.
“I have learned that the population of Nepal is ...” Silence.
Papa was thinking about what was said and then he said, “Get the map; let’s see where Nepal is.” Then the whole family went on a search for Nepal.
By looking at us, listening to us, respecting our input, affirming (肯定) our value and giving us a sense of dignity, Papa was unquestioningly our most influential teacher. Later during my training as a future teacher, I studied with some of his most famous educators. They were imparting (传授) what Papa had known all along — keeping learning all the time. His educational way has served me well all my life.

26. What is the greatest value of “dinner time” to the author?

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!
With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced(平衡的) decisions that will help shape your future. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.
Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. You will probably want to be independent(独立的). But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. Your family have been with you since you came into this world.
It is also perfectly natural in this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. Choose your friends wisely. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens. This period is part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey and there will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not ever see all of your classmates again.
You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely!

To many web-building spiders, most of whom are nearly blind, the web is their essential window on the world: their means of communicating, capturing prey (猎物), meeting mates and protecting themselves. A web-building spider without its web is like a man cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death.
So important is the web to an orb-web spider’s survival that the animal will continue to construct new webs daily even if it is being starved. For 16 days the hungry spider builds completely normal webs. Then, as the animal gets thinner, it constructs a wider-meshed web using fewer strands (线). Such webs would only trap larger prey, which is more economical from the perspective of a starving spider.
The spider stores energy by recycling web protein. It simply eats its own web each evening and re-uses it to produce new silk. In the following studies, it was found that 95 percent of web protein reappears in the next day’s web. Most of the energy needed for web-building is used in walking over the strands as they are laid down.
Scientists are impressed by the spider’s highly preprogrammed brain, which is larger for its size than the brain of any other invertebrate (无脊椎动物). If web-building is interrupted, or if some of the existing strands are destroyed, the spider simply goes back to see where the web is left off and then finished building a normal web. One spider will even finish building the incomplete web of another.
32. According to the passage which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Web-building spiders have good eyesight.
B. One web-building spider usually conducts one web.
C. Most spiders will stop conducting webs when hungry.
D. Web-building spiders will probably die without their webs.
33. A spider conducts a wider-meshed web when _______.
A. it is 16 days old B. it has fewer strands
C. it is getting weaker D. it hunts for food
34. A spider’s ability to finish an incomplete web proves that _______.
A. it uses web protein to reproduce silk
B. it has a highly preprogrammed brain
C. the web is almost everything for a spider
D. it is able to rebuild a completely destroyed web
35. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Keys to Spiders’ Adaptability B. Web-building Spiders’ Life Secrets
C. Importance of Webs to Spiders D. Spiders’ Highly Preprogrammed Brain
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. C

根据第一段的“A web-building spider without its web is like a man cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death.”(一个没有网的蜘蛛就像一个被扔在荒石岛上的人,完全与人失去联系,注定要饿死。)可知没有网的话,蜘蛛很可能会死掉。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“Then, as the animal gets thinner, it constructs a wider-meshed web using fewer strands (线).( 然后,随着动物变得更瘦,它用更少的线构建一个更宽的网)”可知当蜘蛛变得虚弱的时候,它们会织出更大的网。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Scientists are impressed by the spider’s highly preprogrammed brain, which is larger for its size than the brain of any other invertebrate (无脊椎动物).”(蜘蛛的高度预编程好的大脑的适应性给科学家们留下了深刻印象, 它比任何其他任何无脊椎动物的大脑都大)及下文用蜘蛛能修补好蜘蛛网为例证明这个论点。因此推断蜘蛛能修补好蜘蛛网证明了蜘蛛有高度预编的大脑。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“To many web-building spiders, most of whom are nearly blind, the web is their essential window on the world: their means of communicating, capturing prey (猎物), meeting mates and protecting themselves.”(对许多织网的蜘蛛来说,他们大部分几乎是瞎子,网是他们在世界上必须的东西:他们交流,捕捉猎物,会见同伴,自我保护的的方式)以及其他内容可知,本文主要讲述了网对于蜘蛛的重要性。因此推断C项“网对于蜘蛛的重要性”为最佳标题。故选C。

Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously.
If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. ___37___ But don’t stop on the first try!
Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes and say, “Go on, I’m not scared!”
___38___
Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on.
Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.
Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.
___39___ A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.
Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

【答案】When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better.
