My two daughters and I got into the car to spend our weekend in Florida. Autumn, the elder one, offered to drive. I sat next to her, and Amber sat in back. After setting out, the three of us sang to the radio at the top of our voice.
It was a great trip until the rain poured and the rain was too heavy. “I have to pull over, ”Autumn said. She tried to enter the far right lane (车道)to find a place to stop, but trucks ran fast, making water onto our car. The car was out of control, then worse ---it started to move left and right. Autumn fought to control it but it was too late. We ran into a truck. The girls jumped out of the car. My chest felt much pain.
“Get out, Mom. Come on!” Amber cried. “I can’t ” I said. Autumn took out her cellphone,“There’s been an accident. Send an ambulance (救护车)!” Amber and Autumn pulled me out of the car and helped me lie on my back in the grassy area by the roadside. I had to calm myself and looked up. A man held a large umbrella over me and other kind faces appeared above me. A woman helped to treat a cut over Amber’s eye. Another woman came close to me and said, “No one in the truck was injured. Help was on the way. The woman mentioned she was a nurse; the other woman who took care of Amber's cut was an eye specialist. We couldn’t have asked for better care.
In the hospital the pain in my chest began to disappear. Later, the
tests at the hospital made sure we had no serious injuries. We’d left all our troubles behind thanks to these kind people, who seemed to be angels (天使)in my eyes.

People in Japan tend to live longer and stay healthier in their later years, with an increasing number of old people living alone. Japan is on a fast track to “ultra-age”(老龄化)with people aged 65 or above accounting for 28 percent of its total population in 2019; it was 26.7 percent in 2017. On the other hand, the number of births in 2019 fell to its lowest (about 941,000) since records began in 1899.
Demand for care services for elderly people has increased. A shrinking (缩小)working population means fewer able-bodied adults are available to look after the elderly. State-provided facilities(国有设施) for the elderly are not enough, which causes elderly people to turn to private ones but they are expensive.
The country will be short of 380,000 of health nurses by 2025. The government has to turn to advanced robots to meet the shortage. A study found that using robots encouraged one third of the people to become more active and independent. Yet there is no robot that can provide the emotional support to the elderly.
Japan provides a case study for China, which is also faced with a fast aging population. 17.23 million babies were born in China in 2019, about 630,000 fewer than in 2018. People aged 60 accounted for 17.3 of China's population in 2019. With a shortage of elderly care facilities and unbalanced supply, China may find it hard to deal with the rapidly increasing number of senior citizens.
To meet the challenge, the Chinese government should make policy changes, which Japan is unwilling or unable to do or even consider. China should pay attention to the signals its aging population is sending and take proper and timely action.
    27.    What do we learn about the old Japanese?
    A.    More and more old Japanese prefer to live on their own.
    B.    A lot of old Japanese have to continue working at old age.
    C.    Some old Japanese remain active with the help of robots.
    D.    Japanese aged 65 or above make up one third of its population.
    28.    What can we know about state-provided care facilities for the elderly in Japan?
    A. They arc expensive.    B. They are    inconvenient.
    C. They are affordable.    D. They are fashionable.
    29.    What do the Japanese do to deal with the shortage of health nurses?
    A.    They hire foreign health nurses.
    B. They employ advanced robots.
    C.    They set up more nursing schools.
    D. They train the elderly to tend themselves.
    30.    What is the main idea of the last two paragraph?
    A.    Japan has to take action to deal with the aging population.
    B.    Robots can’t provide emotional support to the elderly.
    C.    China is now faced with a fast aging population.
    D.    Japan’s aging population issue is a timely lesson for China.
    D
About six years ago I was going through a tough time, trying to work two jobs to afford my rent. On a cold Sunday morning, I went to GameStop-a video game retailer(零售商), to cancel the game I’d booked. A woman in a car parked outside called me when I exited the store. Though it was in broad daylight, I was shy about it and kept some distance when I walked over. She said she couldn’t walk and requested me to purchase a Kinect, a popular game, for her as her son’s Christmas gift. Because of her leg disease it was painful for her to move around. She called ahead but the employee(雇员)wasn’t willing to help. She gave me about $ 100 in cash and her credit card.
I walked back in and bought the Kinect. Then it occurred to me that this woman, a complete stranger, trusted me. What was it that stopped me from lying about the payment method and just pocket her cash? She couldn’t know I wasn’t a cheat; and how could she possibly believe in someone so much?
I handed her the cash back, explaining I had to pay with her card---it was above $ 100 at the time, and handed over the game and her credit card. “This is what my son’s been longing for. Thank you! By the way, just from glancing at you, I know you are the one who will be a friend to someone in need. You have a face of an angel!” she said. She gave me $ 10 and refused to take it back. Then she drove away.
She had no idea how much of a difference even $ 10 made. I was able to buy a few cheap groceries for the week and it really made a hard time in my life a little better. She may think I helped her; however, I truly feel like the one who was being gifted something amazing.

B.The author worked so hard that there was no time for games.
C.The author was unwilling to help and kept a distance from the woman.
D.The woman requested the author to purchase a Kinect for her son.
33.What can we know about the woman?
A.She gave the author $ 10 for the video game.
B.She chose the author because he was handsome.
C.She might not know exactly how much the video game would cost.
D.She didn’t buy the video game by herself because of her laziness.

A.Kind and honest. B.Brave and curious.
C.Humorous and wise. D.Determined and energetic.

    How to choose extracurricular activities
From sports to clubs to outside organizations, there are many activities to take part in outside the classroom. 36. Fortunately, it becomes quite easy once you figure out what you enjoy doing in general. With a little more careful thought, you can also choose an activity that interests you.
Think about your interests and know your advantages. Before you start considering specific(具体的) activities, take a step back. Think about what excites you and find your passions(热情). 37. Now that you have a better idea of what you like to do in general, decide on those that you are good at. Ask yourself what skills they show. Then find activities that require the same ones. Make sure that you will enjoy yourself by choosing an activity that lets you shine.
    38. In addition to your interests and advantages, know what you would like to improve about yourself. Use activities as a way to make yourself better. Find out new challenges, without the added stress of having to earn good grades at them. You can use activities to develop general skills that you may not have.
Find out what activities are available(可用的)and look into each one. 39. If the website seems incomplete, talk with your teacher or parents. Also look for calendar details, such as start-and-end dates, plus event schedules, to make sure it won’t get in the way of anything else going on in your life. Once you have a list of activities that match your interests, do a little research. 40.
A.Think about skills you want to develop.
B.This can make choosing one a little difficult.
C.Use your freshman year to explore your choices.
D.In this way, you will have a better idea of what to expect.
E.Also make sure that their culture is a good match for your own personality.
F.Use those to decide on activities that will keep you interested for a long time.
