Different Ways to Give Directions
Foreign visitors are often puzzled (迷惑的) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. People there use landmarks (地标建筑) instead of street names. For example, Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and the post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the Midwest of America, usually there are not many landmarks. So, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, “Go north two miles, you will see it on your left.”
People in Los Angeles, Caledonia have no idea of distance (距离) on the map. They will say, “It is about fifteen minutes by car.” They don’t know how many miles away it is.
Few people understand the Greek language, so people in Greece sometimes are so friendly. They will say, “Follow me.” Then he takes you to the right place you are looking for.
People in Mexico think, “I don’t know” is not polite. When you ask them the way, no one answers “I don’t know”. They will give you an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very lost there.
One thing will help you everywhere. You may not understand a person’s word, but you may understand his body language. He or she will point in the right direction.

Have you ever wondered, what’s the fastest, most effective(有效的) way to learn? What’s the secret to remembering what you learn?
The “learning pyramid”, developed by the National Training Laboratory, suggests that most students only remember 10% of what they read from textbooks, but keep nearly 90% of what they learn through teaching others. Research shows that when we teach what we learn, something magical happens in our minds. We suddenly notice mistakes in our thinking. We have more creative ideas. Our ideas become sharper. We remember what we learned for longer.
Many of the world’s top businessmen, and scientists have used this way as a central way to their work. They’ve done this through many ways:
In 2016, Buffett wrote a 50-year retrospective(回顾). He says, “As you might guess, I ended up being the main beneficiary(受益者) of this effort. There’s nothing like actually writing something out to clear thinking.” Albert Einstein took more than 80,000 pages of notes in his lifetime. Thomas Edison wrote more than five million pages of notes.
Many of the most fascinating ideas in history came from pairs of friends who spent years discussing and arguing with each other. Nobel laureates Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky spent years walking for hours a day, sharing and laughing about different opinions they noticed. Francis Crick and James Watson, the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA, argued all the time, both in their shared office and during daily lunches in Cambridge.
( )43.From this passage, we can remember most of what we learn by ________.
A.reading textbooks B.discussing with others

A.They were thinking. B.They were sharing different ideas.
C.They were arguing with each other. D.They were writing something.
( )45.How many ways did the world’s top persons use according to the passage?
A.Two B.Three C.Four D.Five
( )46.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.How to have more creative ideas? B.How to be the world’s top person?
C.Buffett’s 50-year retrospective. D.A more effective way to learn.

On August 24, 2023, Japan poured nuclear(核能的) wastewater from the Fukushima plant into the Pacific ocean. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) planned to pour 460 tons of such water into the sea in the following 17 days. Now, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has around 1.34 million tons of such water, and fresh nuclear wastewater is still generated(产生) every day. According to Japanese government and TEPCO, the pouring process will last at least 30 years.
Towards Japan’s act, many countries express their different opinions, among which Chinese government is seriously against Japan's selfish act. Different from China, Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, endorsed Japan’s plan. However, most of the western people and environmental activists know nothing about Japan’s terrible action.
Japanese government and TEPCO said that, besides the tritium(氚), all radioactive elements(放射性元素) in the nuclear wastewater meet the discharge standards(排放标准). However, However, not everyone agrees with it. Back in 2019, people did research on these radioactive elements. The result shows that these elements can enter human bodies through the food chain, leading to radiation-related(辐射相关的) problems.
The discharge of nuclear wastewater would result in marine organisms(海洋生物) taking in the discharged elements. This act not only will cause a lot of problems to marine ecosystems(海洋生态系统), but it also may lead to food safety problems, appearance of new disease and the increase of cancer. Besides, the discharge of nuclear wastewater would possibly cause the disappearance of species, the decrease of biodiversity and marine life. Finally, such act will influence the future of our planet.
For Japan, the act of directly discharging nuclear wastewater into the sea might seem not that important. Yet, the influence of this choice is far beyond Japan itself. Japan’s actions will influence all nations and people in the world. So, here’s an important question: What lies before the future of our planet?
( )47.What does the underlined word “endorse” in paragraph two probably mean?
A.distrust B.support C.be against D.don’t care
( )48.Which one is the influence of the discharge of nuclear wastewater into the sea.
A.More species will appear. B.More marine life will appear.
C.Some cancers will disappear. D.Some new diseases will appear.
( )49.What can we can learn from the passage?
A.The pouring process will only last for 17 days.
B.Japan’s act will hardly cause problems in food safety.
C.Radioactive elements can enter human bodies by eating food.
D.People believe radioactive elements meet the discharge standards.
( )50.According to your inference(推断),what is this passage going to talk about next?
A.Where is the future of our planet?
B.What is the influence of Japan’s act?
C.What are people’s opinions towards Japan’s act?
D.Why did Japan pour nuclear wastewater into the sea?
