It was in October. I was aimlessly wandering down the street, heading into a most gloriously beautiful sunset. I had an urge (冲动) to speak to someone on the street to share that beauty, but it seemed everyone was in a hurry.
I took the next-best action. Quickly I ducked into a department store and asked the lady behind the counter if she could come outside for just a minute. She looked at me as if I were from some other planet. She hesitated, and then seemingly against her better judgment, she moved towards the door.
When she got outside, I said to her, "Just look at that sunset! Nobody out here was looking at it and I just had to share it with someone."
For a few seconds we just looked. Then I said, "All is right with the world." I thanked her for coming out to see it. She went back inside and I left. I felt good to share the beauty.
Four years later my situation changed greatly. I came to the end of a twenty-year marriage. I was alone and on my own for the first time in my life. I lived in a trailer park, which I considered a real comedown, and I had to do my washing in the community laundry room.
One day, while my clothes were going around, I picked up a magazine and read an article about a woman who had been in similar circumstances (境况). She had come to the end of a marriage, moved to a strange community, and the only job she could find was one she disliked: saleswoman in a department store.
Then something that happened to her changed everything. She said a woman came into her department store and asked her to step outside to look at the sunset. The stranger had said, "All is right with the world," and she had realized the truth in that statement. From that moment on, she turned her life around.

37.After reading the article in the magazine, the writer was probably _________________.
A.encouraged B.puzzled C.regretful D.peaceful

You are on your way home after school. Suddenly, you see a man lying on the road. He is badly injured but the ambulance (救护车) hasn't come yet, what would you do? Middle school students in Louisville, US, would give the man a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR,心肺复苏). It is a type of first aid. That is because they've learnt CPR in class.
Louisville started the CPR Anytime program months ago. The program teaches middle school students CPR with face and lung (肺部) dummies (仿制品) and DVDs in class. “We know CPR can help save people's lives," said Joseph Laskowski, who works for the program. "The more people can use CPR, the more injured people can get help. And we know that the best way to teach CPR skills to everyone is to build it into our school."
Through the program, students learn and practice the CPR skills on a dummy(人体模型) while watching a DVD. Each student can also take back home a set of face and lung dummies so that they can use them to share CPR with family and friends.
Shawna Jackson is a 12-year-old student at Lassiter Middle School in Louisville. In one class, she learned to press down on a dummy and do chest compressions (胸部压缩). She said that she found CPR was very difficult the first time she tried it, but now she feels "It's quite easy."

How can you look better? Having a nice hairstyle or wearing fashionable clothes can be good ideas. But here's a quicker and easier way: just stand among a group of people.
Scientists at the University of California, San Diego, US, suggest that people look better when seen among others, rather than when seen as individuals (个人). They call it the “cheerleader effect (拉拉队效应)”.
Scientists did five experiments with photos of over 130 people. Some people were pictured alone, and others were in groups. Then they showed these photos to 100 people and asked them to rate (评价) their attractiveness (吸引力). In every case, for men and women, people in groups got higher attractiveness ratings. The single person pictures would even rate higher when it was put among other faces.
This effect did not depend on the number of faces in the group. Any size of group would do. The-cheerleader effect works because whenever we look at a group of people, we “average out (平均)" their faces, not noticing the flaws (缺陷) of each face. But if you look at everybody individually, his or her flaws stand out.
This explains why singers usually surround themselves with dancers when they perform. And why pop boy bands and girl groups always seem so attractive.
The nice part of the cheerleader effect is that it might give us another excuse to socialize (社会化) and travel in numbers. Human beings enjoy the companionship (陪伴) of others.
Maybe we actually look better among friends not only because of bone structures (骨骼结构), but because we're happier.
42. If you want to look better, the scientists suggest _________________.
A. getting a nice hairstyle B. wearing fashionable clothes
C. staying among a group of people D. being a cheerleader
43. Which of the following about the experiments is TRUE?
A. Scientists did five experiments with over 130 people.
B. Women got higher attractiveness ratings than men.
C. People in groups looked more attractive than those alone.
D. The people in the photos tested in the experiments are not good-looking.
4 How does the "cheerleader effect" explain why pop boy bands and girl groups seem attractive?
A. There are usually a great number in the group.
B. People usually don't notice the flaws of each face.
C. Most of them hardly have any flaws.
C. They are handsome boys and beautiful girls.
45. From the last paragraph, we learn that _________________.
A. the cheerleader effect is a good excuse to socialize
B. being happy may make people look better
C. one cannot live without others
D. a good figure is not important for looking good
