From two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour(LET)to Wales’ first ever Sondheim Cup player, there were many ways for onlookers to label Becky Brewer-ton in 2012, but none got close to the way she was describing herself.
In January 2012 Brewer-ton was enjoying a peaceful Sunday afternoon in Spain before deciding to venture out on a bike ride. One small stone on a corner later got the 29-year-old flying headfirst over the handlebars, cutting her head and tearing half the skin on her right hand. The crash was so severe that it left a cut around her hip joint (髋关节) big enough to fit her entire thumb into. Suddenly becoming near-disabled, she was always feeling genuinely scared on the golf course, but could do little to get rid of such feelings. After shooting 88 on the opening day at the Ladies European Masters in2016, she was told by officials that she could not return for the second round. Then, almost overnight, her game disappeared. In Brewer-ton’s own words, she had hit rock bottom.
As Brewer-ton’s ranking fell downwards, so too did her income. She worked for Amazon, Deliveroo, and then in the professional shop of a golf club. Without a place to live, she stayed with a friend and former physical trainer for two and a half years. Working other jobs acted as a “reality check”, offering a perspective of how lucky she felt to be a professional sportsperson. She began journaling and meditating. Despite her struggles, Brewer-ton never fell out of love with golf. After returning to LET qualifying school to regain her Tour card, by the end of 2021, Brewer-ton found herself again enjoying golf.
While she dreams of a return to silverware, the 39-year-old is targeting a success beyond wins. “I’ve absolutely, hand on heart, promised myself that I’m not going to interpret those days as bad things, because this is what we live for.” she said.
    4. What did the cycling experience mean to Brewer-ton’s career?
    A. A starting line. B. A tough challenge.
    C. A breakthrough. D. A turning point.
    5. Why did Brewer-ton work different jobs in paragraph 3?
    A. To make ends meet. B. To gain work experience.
    C. To change her perspective. D. To make golf her passion.
    6. Which of the following can best describe Brewer-ton?
    A. Consistent and positive. B. Determined and reliable.
    C. Inventive and independent. D. Adventurous and responsible.
    7. What does Brewer-ton’s story tell us?
    A. Constant dropping wears the stone.
    B. Every man is his own worst enemy.
    C. Difficult circumstances serve as a textbook of life.
    D. When a man is going down-hill, everyone will give him a push.
D 5. A 6. A 7. C

The Greenwood fire took its name from the nearby lake where lightning struck on 15 August, 2021, causing a wildfire that burned for weeks. Its persistence dominated headlines for much of late summer and early fall in Minnesota. When the last flames were finally put out, the northern Minnesota fire had consumed nearly 27,000 acres, countless firefighting resources, and at its worst, the lives that some had built around nearby McDonald Lake. Vast areas of the forest were-left burned out, with black and bare pines.
But, despite the destruction, Mother Nature is set to a comeback. When organic matter is burned from the forest floor, seeds dropped by plants and trees begin to take hold, with the sprouting species emerging first. The trees above have died, which sends a chemical signal to the root systems that are actually more expansive than just under those trees, and that chemical response encourages them to regrow.
Ten years ago, a fire ripped through 93,000 acres of Minnesota forest. Today, that burnt area’s rebirth is well underway. “Here in the Pagan Creek wildfire scar, we have Jack Pine, Red Pine, Black Spruce, Aspen and paper birch—those are our main species, the ones that are growing quickly. It’s 10 years on and these trees are 10 to 15 feet tall in many areas.” said Kyle Stoves from the US Forest Service.
A wildfire kills most things in its path, but rarely is everything reduced to ashes and that plays a key role in a forest’s regeneration. So just one year after the fire, as we can now see here in Greenwood, the survivors dominate the forest, and grasses replace the burnt ground. Wildflowers are abundant. Bushes and small trees have started to grow. So it’s an amazing ecological system of creating new forest life when it appears that all is lost, one that has evolved throughout the ages, where fire has always played a vital role.
    8. What do we know about the Greenwood fire in paragraph 1?
    A. It went beyond control. B. It received long-time attention.
    C. It was the worst in history. D. It claimed many lives of firefighters.
    9. Which of the following can replace“ripped”underlined in paragraph 3?
    A. Handled. B. Resisted. C. Maintained. D. Swept.
    10. What do Kyle Stover’s words focus on?
    A. The comeback of nature. B. The growth of specific plants.
    C. The local species of trees. D. the function of organic systems.
    11. What may be the best title?
    A. Trees are capable of regeneration.
    B. Ecological systems can be delicate.
    C. Wildfires cause more damage than assumed.
    D. Mother Nature is recovering from destruction.
B 9. D 10. A 11. D
根据文章第一段第二句“Its persistence dominated headlines for much of late summer and early fall in Minnesota.”(大火持续燃烧,占据了明尼苏达州夏末初秋的头版头条。)
根据文章第三段第二句 “Today, that burnt area’s rebirth is well underway. ”(现在,被烧毁地区的复苏状况良好)可知,十年前的大火毁掉了该地的森林,即大火席卷了这片森林,故此处“ripped”是“席卷,肆虐”的意思。故选D项。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“those are our main species, the ones that are growing quickly. It’s 10 years on and these trees are 10 to 15 feet tall in many areas.”(那些是我们主要的物种,他们生长的很快。 故选A项。
根据第二段第一句“But, despite the destruction, Mother Nature is set to a comeback. ”(但是,尽管破坏严重,大自然母亲已经在开始恢复)及第四段“So just one year after the fire, as we can now see here in Greenwood, the survivors dominate the forest, and grasses replace the burnt ground. Wildflowers are abundant. Bushes and small trees have started to grow. ”(所以仅仅在大火一年之后,我们在Greenwood就看见了恢复的生机,在烧毁的地面上长出了草地。野花遍地,灌木丛和小树苗也开始生长。)可知,虽然大火破坏严重,但大自然母亲正在逐渐复苏,所以D项“大自然正在从毁灭中恢复。”最适合做文章标题。故选D项。

Psychologists have long believed that personalities are relatively immune to changes following collective stressful events, such as natural disasters, but the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be an exception, said Angelina Sutin, a psychologist at Florida State University. Researchers from a new study analyzed answers from 7,109 adults in the United States, based on the Big Five personality traits: neuroticism (神经过敏), extroversion (外向), openness, agreeableness and dutifulness. The participants, aged 18 to 109, took multiple personality tests on their phones or computers measuring these traits before and during the pandemic.
In the first, “acute” phase from March 2020 to December 2020, personality traits remained fairly consistent with per-pandemic surveys, with only neuroticism slightly declining. By the second phase, defined as the “adaptation” period from January 2021 to February 2022, there were no overall shifts in neuroticism relative to per-pandemic levels, but adults had become less extroverted, open, agreeable and dutiful. Also, younger adults’ personalities changed the most, while the oldest group had no significant shifts. And no other age group saw an increase in neuroticism in the second phase, but adults under 30 did.
“The results don’t hold true tor each person. So its no surprise if you don’t see that same change in yourself or those closest to you,” Sutin said.
Although personality doesn’t directly control mental health, Sutin is advocating for more research into the impact that pandemic-related personality changes may have on well being, particularly for young adults. “We need to do what we can to help support younger adults as much as possible, so they can make better transitions into adulthood and reduce the stress that they face to help improve their mental health and long-term outcomes,” said Sutin.
Still, the study had a few downsides, said Brent Roberts, a psychologist at the University of Illinois Banana-Champaign. There was no control group of people who hadn’t experienced the pandemic, and other explanations weren’t explored, making it hard to assess if these personality changes were directly caused by the pandemic.
    12. How may psychologists feel about the pandemic’s impact on personality?
    A. Concerned. B. Uninterested. C. Unexpected. D. Annoyed.
    13. How did participants get involved in the study?
    A. By responding to questions online.
    B. By making some personal requests.
    C. By analyzing their personality traits.
    D. By recording their daily life with phones.
    14. What did the findings of the research indicate regarding personalities?
    A. Neuroticism remained consistent.
    B. The two phases shared similar results.
    C. Young adults underwent more changes.
    D. The older people were, the more shifts they had.
    15. What is the last paragraph intended to show about the study?
    A. Its prospect. B. Its limitations. C. Its significance. D. Its advancement.
C 13. A 14. C 15. B
由第一段中的“Psychologists have long believed that personalities are relatively immune to changes following collective stressful events, such as natural disasters, but the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be an exception, said Angelina Sutin, a psychologist at Florida State University. (佛罗里达州立大学心理学家安吉丽娜·苏廷表示,心理学家长期以来一直认为,在自然灾害等集体压力事件发生后,性格相对不会发生变化,但新冠肺炎疫情似乎是个例外)”可知,新冠肺炎疫情居然让人们性格发生了变化,这是一个例外,让心理学家意想不到。故选C项。
    【13题详解】
细节理解题。由第一段中的“The participants, aged 18 to 109, took multiple personality tests on their phones or computers measuring these traits before and during the pandemic. (参与者年龄在18岁至109岁之间,在疫情之前和期间,他们在手机或电脑上进行了多项性格测试,测量这些特征)”可知,参与者通过在线回答问题参与研究的。故选A项。
由第二段中的“Also, younger adults’ personalities changed the most, while the oldest group had no significant shifts. And no other age group saw an increase in neuroticism in the second phase, but adults under 30 did. (此外,年轻人的性格变化最大,而年龄最大的群体没有明显变化。在第二阶段,没有其他年龄组的神经质有所增加,但30岁以下的成年人有所增加)”和第四段中的“Although personality doesn’t directly control mental health, Sutin is advocating for more research into the impact that pandemic-related personality changes may have on well being, particularly for young adults. (尽管个性并不能直接控制心理健康,但Sutin主张对与疫情相关的性格变化可能对健康产生的影响进行更多研究,尤其是对年轻人)”可知,研究结果表明,年轻人性格经历了更多的变化。故选C项。
    【15题详解】
推理判断题。由最后一段“Still, the study had a few downsides, said Brent Roberts, a psychologist at the University of Illinois Banana-Champaign. There was no control group of people who hadn’t experienced the pandemic, and other explanations weren’t explored, making it hard to assess if these personality changes were directly caused by the pandemic. (伊利诺伊大学香蕉-香槟分校的心理学家布伦特·罗伯茨表示,尽管如此,这项研究仍有一些缺点。没有一组没有经历过疫情的人作为对照,也没有探索其他解释,因此很难评估这些性格变化是否是由疫情直接导致的)”可知,作者在最后一段想告诉读者这项研究的局限性。故选B项。

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We all have memories of what our fathers enjoyed, and all the fun we had with him: travelling, reading, or exploring the neighborhood hiking trail. Each of us has treasured stories and memories of times with dad.___16___
The charm of storytelling, the fun of traveling, the immersion in a book...these are the gifts of a lifetime my father helped me unwrap.___17___All the stories he narrated to engage us and all the travels we took with him opened up a whole new world to me which was like a breath of fresh air in my life.
My father, turning 75 this year, is still a storyteller, but his exploration of the world has turned virtual. Like almost all children, I spent my twenties walking away from his stories since I was always “occupied with my work.”___18___ August all expectations, I hear the unsaid health concerns and the frustration at no being able to do everything the way he used to. In contrast, I have travelled farther than he could take us, and read books much more than he ever had time outside his working hours.
___19___That lies in the things he points at and in the activities he helps us manage. He gifts us expediences of strength and courage that power us forward into the big wide world — a world he walks with us so as to better assure that we will be able to explore and navigate its nettles (荨麻) without being held back by our fears or worries.
Have you ever put your ear to a seashell and heard the waves whooshing in there? On the outside, it is a hard shell — pitted, untidily edged and boldly patterned.___20___They seem to have a tough shell, and you have to put them to your heart and listen for the waves of what they feel and whatever it is that they have left unsaid.

    C. In some ways, this describes fathers.
    D. However, a father can sometimes be hard on us.
    E. Inside are some valuable contents that should be treasured.

根据上文“Each of us has treasured stories and memories of times with dad.(我们每个人都珍藏着和父亲在一起的故事和回忆)”可知,A选项“I am no exception. (我也不例外)”与上文衔接自然,符合语境。故选A项。
根据上文“The charm of storytelling, the fun of traveling, the immersion in a book ...these are the gifts of a lifetime my father helped me unwrap.(讲故事的魅力,旅行的乐趣,沉浸在书中的沉浸感……这些是我父亲帮我解开的一生的礼物)”及下文“All the stories he narrated to engage us and all the travels we took with him opened up a whole new world to me which was like a breath of fresh air in my life.(他讲的故事吸引了我们,我们和他一起旅行,为我打开了一个全新的世界,就像我生活中的一股新鲜空气)”可知,G选项“As I look back on my childhood, I see loads of books and miles of travel. (当我回顾我的童年时,我看到了大量的书籍和数英里的旅行)”能够承上启下,符合语境,其中的books和travel是关键词。故选G项。
    【18题详解】
根据上文“Like almost all children, I spent my twenties walking away from his stories since I was always “occupied with my work.” (像几乎所有的孩子一样,我在二十多岁的时候远离他的故事,因为我总是“忙于我的工作。”)”可知,作者因工作原因远离父亲20多年,现在也已经不再年轻;下文“August all expectations, I hear the unsaid health concerns and the frustration at no being able to do everything the way he used to. (现在年纪大了,智慧也变了,我又开始专心听他的故事)”能够承上启下,符合语境,其中的older以及restarted listening为关键信息。故选F项。
    【19题详解】

(他赐予我们力量和勇气的经验,使我们进入广阔的世界——他与我们同行的世界,以便更好地确保我们能够探索和驾驭它的荨麻,而不会被我们的恐惧或担忧所阻碍)”可知,该段讲述的是父亲给了我们一个世界。由此可知,B选项“A father brings the world to us.
根据上文“Have you ever put your ear to a seashell and heard the waves whooshing in there? On the outside, it is a hard shell — pitted, untidily edged and boldly patterned. (你有没有把耳朵放在贝壳上,听到海浪在那里呼啸而过?从外面看,它是一个坚硬的外壳——坑坑洼洼、边缘凌乱、图案大胆)”并结合下文“They seem to have a tough shell, and you have to put them to your heart and listen for the waves of what they feel and whatever it is that they have left unsaid. (他们似乎有一个坚硬的外壳,你必须把它们放在心上,倾听他们的感受以及他们没有说出的任何东西)”可知,此段是对父亲的描述。由此可知,C选项“In some ways, this describes fathers.

分析可知,“Born and (raise)in the city”在句中为状语,空处与主语68-year-old Cui为动宾关系,所以此处用过去分词raised,故填raised。
所以空处填frequents(常去),故填frequents。
分析可知,“bringing the Yellow River water to present day Ningxia”与“helping him the region with vast deserts into farmland”为并列关系,所以用连词and,故填and。
故填was included。
短语:function as“作为”,所以空处填as,故填as。

先行词为“wetlands and a large artificial lake”,指物,且从句缺少主语,所以用关系代词which。故填which。

I’m planning to shoot a video to introduce my hometown to my foreign friends, and I have already finished the English narrations myself. For lack of confidence about the language use, I’m writing with sincerity to ask you a favour to revise them.
The video lasting about five minutes, it would be better for the narrations to be limited to 800 words. More importantly, the language is expected to be accurate, vivid and authentic, enabling international friends to better appreciate my hometown’s scenery and culture. Many thanks for considering my request. Looking forward to your early reply.

    A Dream Come True
For many years, I kept having the same dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
Deep inside, I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all, I longed to someday march down the hallway to receive my diploma(毕业文凭).That seemed more appealing even than getting married. But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought.Years later, I married and had three children, and I thought,“There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis(幼年型关节炎)in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her going back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad. in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,”I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening, so we went there to just sign her up for night school. Linda was busy filling out register forms-when the secretary knowing me well said, “Mrs.Schantz, why don’t you come back to school?”
I laughed ,“There’s no way. I’m 55.” But he insisted, and before I knew it, I was enrolled for classes in English and art.“This is only an experiment,”I warned the secretary, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.
    续写要求:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
It was exciting to go to school again, but also tough.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Linda and I helped each other through.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was exciting to go to school again, but also tough. At first, I felt really embarrassed to be sitting in a classroom with all the kids staring at me, even though I knew they were only doing it out of curiosity. However, the first few months of going back to studying were undoubtedly challenging, for I had totally forgotten what I had learned in my younger days. Fortunately, the attitude of the teachers calmed my nerves. They didn’t say much but they behaved with great understanding. Also, as a mother of three children, I had to balance loads of housework and my kids’ needs while doing my courses.
Linda and I helped each other through. Linda would share the housework when I was up to my eyebrows with my schoolwork. And when she was down, I would stay by her side, offering comfort and encouragement. I have to say, it was a hard time for both of us but we didn’t give up. Finally, I completed all the credits needed for graduation. I glowed with pride as I was presented with my diploma. Waving my hands at Linda, I could hardly contain my excitement. At last, the unfinished business in my dreams had been finished.
