Marathon is the supreme discipline of long-distance running. They are not only attractive for top athletes, but also for hobby runners. The choice of events is almost endless. Now we have put together some most breathtakingly beautiful ones that you’ll be tempted (诱惑) to run holding a camera.
    Ultra-trail Angkor, Cambodia
The newest of a series of Angkor marathons, this endurance test offers 32-km, 64-km and 128-km routes around the famous temples, including Bayon and Angkor Wat. Watch out for monkeys, and the gigantic tree vines that memorably hug some of the great buildings.
    Dodo Trail, Mauritius
Crossing rugged coastline and tropical forests, the Dodo Trail is full of wildlife, although the famous dodo bird remains, sadly, extinct. While the demanding 50km Xtreme route covers 828m-high Black River Peak, a beginner-friendly Mini Dodo Trail (10 km) is easier.
    Great Ocean Road marathon, Australia
Another well-known scenic coastal drive, southern Australia’s Great Ocean Road stages a footrace every May. Neck-ache could be a problem: in one direction lies the scenic South Sea, and in another handsome forest and, if you’re lucky, a koala or two. Be warned, however, that the series of steep slopes make this one of the toughest marathons.
    Big Five marathon, South Africa
Marathon meets safari at the privately owned Entabeni Game Reserve every June. The start time is dependent on the race-day location of the Big Five members-African elephants, Cape buffalo, lions, leopards and rhinos-as organizers try to guarantee sightings.
    21. Which marathon is suitable for less experienced runners?
    A. Ultra-trail Angkor. B. Dodo Trail.
    C. Great Ocean Road marathon. D. Big Five marathon.
    22. Why does the writer mention”neck-ache”in Great Ocean Road marathon?
    A. To highlight the wonderful scenery. B. To present the difficulty of the event.
    C. To attract attention to physical health. D. To warn runners of dangerous animals.
    23. What do the four marathons have in common?
    A. Risky and tiring routes. B. Beautiful coastal views.
    C. Chances to see wild animals. D. Fixed time for annual events.

I used to procrastinate (拖延). Years ago, a neighbor kid kicked a football and shattered a small basement window of our house. We were a family of six living on a small salary at the time, so I boarded it up, thinking I’d get to it someday. However, the frame was rusted (生锈) shut. I couldn’t fix it.
Over the years, I’d sometimes get estimates from window companies. The plan was to upgrade to energy-efficient windows for the whole house. $15, 000. It was simply out of reach. One contractor explained that whoever replaced it would need to cut and shape by hand, a labor-intensive and expensive process.
Honestly, the thought of that window ate at me for years. Every time I went down there, every time I went to the hardware store, it kept troubling me. I knew I needed to address it, but I had built up the process (and the price) so much in my mind that I was unable to act.
Then my wife had a job change, and we needed to move. A potential buyer couldn’t get a loan on the property if there was a broken window. So I pulled off the boards to face this thing head-on. It had been at least 5 years.
I grabbed some rust remover, sprayed all around the rusted frame, and gave it a strong pull. To my astonishment, it moved for the first time. I pulled the window out and took it downtown. It was a $ 12 fix.
I could have fixed the problem for $12 the same day it happened. But I let it haunt me for years, shutting out light and letting in bugs. It didn’t need to be the most efficient. It just needed to be a window.
OK, this isn’t really about my window. I mean the story is true, but it’s also a decent fable (寓言). Many of us, especially those with anxiety, tend to live with broken windows of one type or another for years.
After I posted my story online, many shared their stories with me. One commented, “This reminded me of a statement, ‘We suffer more in imagination than in reality.’” Another responded, “This is why my business partner tells me, ‘Perfect is the enemy of done.’”
Step forward, and you’ll find a solution.
    By Nathan Howe

On January 1st, 2018, “gaming disorder”—in which games are played uncontrollably, despite causing harm—gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO). Last year, China, the world’s biggest gaming market, announced new rules limiting children to just a single hour of play a day. Clinics are appearing around the world, promising to cure patients of their habit.
Are games really addictive? Psychologists have different opinions. The case for the defence is that this is just another moral panic. Similar warnings have been given about television, rock ’n’ roll, jazz, comic books, and even novels. As the newest form of mass media, gaming is merely enduring (忍受) its own time before it finally stops being controversial (有争议的).
However, some argue that unlike rock bands or novelists, games developers have both the motive and the means to engineer their products to make them addictive. For one thing, the business-model has changed. In the old days, games were bought once and for all. But these days, games are free and money is earned from purchases of in-game goods, which ties playtime directly to developers’ income. For another, games makers combine psychological theory and data, which helps them maximize the playtime. Smartphones and modern video game machines use their permanent Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. That allows products to be constantly adjusted to increase spending on games.
The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing. Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO recognition, diagnoses (诊断) become more common. Clinics are already reporting booming business, as lockdowns have given gamers more time to spend with their hobby. And being put together in the public mind, fairly or not, with gambling will not do the industry any favours.
    28. What is the function of Paragraph 1?
    A. To arouse the readers’ interest about the topic.
    B. To inform the readers of the harmful effects of games.
    C. To discuss whether it is necessary to panic about games.
    D. To show growing public concern about the problem of games.
    29. Why is television, together with other media forms, mentioned in Paragraph 2?
    A. To prove that the panic over games will fade away.
    B. To show that they are as highly addictive as games.
    C. To compare the differences among these media forms.
    D. To argue that the games are similarly harmful as them.
    30. How do games developers make games addictive?
    A. They don’t charge players for in-game goods. B. They change products based on received data.
    C. They reward top players with more playtime. D. They keep adjusting their playtime.
    31. In the last paragraph, the author aims to ________.
    A. offer a suggestion B. make a prediction C. give a warning D. put forward a solution
    D
Studying the DNA of 300 mice has flagged up (引起注意) genes which have been linked to hereditary (遗传的) sight loss for the first time. Researchers say because mice’s genes are so similar to humans’, their findings could lead to the treatment of more genetic diseases.
Scientists at the University of California, Davis studied information from a data bank of mice’s genetic material. They found 347 genes linked to eye problems, with just 86 of them having been studied in the past.
Only around 50 to 75 percent of hereditary eye diseases in human can be explained with present science. The researchers believe these hundreds of new genes found in mice could be a key to explaining-and therefore being able to treat the other 25~50 percent.
“This is extremely valuable for people with hereditary eye disease,” said researcher Professor Ala Moshiri. “All researchers are going to start using these data. In the past, we knew the problem was there but we didn’t know where to look. Now eye centers can call back patients and screen them for these new genes. We expected that more and more of these genetic diseases will be treatable.” Also, the fact is that more than 60 percent of eye problems at birth are ones resulting from the baby’s parents!
Thanks to data from the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC), which is trying to work out what every single gene in a mouse is responsible for, with the aim of translating it to humans, scientists are moving closer to figuring out all genetic causes of blindness. To do this, scientists separate a single gene from other ones at a time and then observe what effect it has on the mouse for a long time. This has so far been done more than 7, 000 times and has achieved great success. Researchers are now working alongside eye care centers in Texas and Iowa in order to compare the mice’s genes to those of patients.
    32. How did the researchers find the genes linked to eye problems?
    A. By comparing the DNA of the mice with that of the humans
    B. By studying the data of mice’s genes
    C. By carrying out thetreatment of genetic diseases
    D. By making calculations
    33. Why is the percentage of genetic eye problems mentioned in paragraph 3?
    A. To show the significance of studying mice’s genes. B. To prove mice’s genes are similar to humans’
    C. To warn the high risk level of suffering them. D. To explain how common they are among people.
    34. What should scientists do first to unlock secrets of genetic blindness?
    A. Compare humans’ genes with mice’s. B. Cooperate with eye care centers.
    C. Set apart a gene of a mouse each time. D. Figure out each gene’s function of a mouse.
    35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. New Ways to Cure Sight Loss B. Genes Found Behind Eye Problems
    C. Genetic Diseases Discovered in Mice D. Humans Genes Causing Eye Diseases

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt showed a red striped nightclothes underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he wore a pair of bright green sandals (凉鞋) that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing something on the blackboard. Mohi said in very low voice, “Sorry, teacher,” and went to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly faded.
Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi’s late arrival and his strange appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would call his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walkover to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi’s name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Hamed peered (窥视) in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played so flawlessly that it sounded like a recording. Hamed left quietly.

Lecture on AI receiving favorable comments
On November 8th, an inspiring lecture on AI and humanity was organized in the school hall, mainly targeted at students in Grade 11.
The lecture started with general accounts of AI, in which its development and practical applications were briefly introduced. What followed was the convenience and potential threats brought to human civilization. As claimed, though benefiting humans enormously, AI might replace humans if not managed appropriately. Finally, a promising prospect of humans living in harmony with AI was forecast.
Undoubtedly, the lecture was both educational and appealing, giving warnings and inspiring the students to adopt objective attitudes to AI.

    读后续写
When Teachers' Day came around, Hamed had a plan. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school's clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin. When he started to play, the audience fell silent. The audience's jaws dropped.
As the last note(音符)ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. After the performance, shy and silent as Mohi was, he gave Hamed a big hug. Love may be silent, but it is always there. Since then, they have been best friends and no one laughed at Mohi any more. With the encouragement of Hamed, Mohi has pursued his dream of being a musician. Not only do friends keep us company but also help us to be our better self.

W: Hey, forgot to tell you … Joe and Anna are moving to Paris!
M: Really? Isn’t that a bit sudden? How did that happen?
W: His company offered him a job out there. They’re going for at least a couple of years.

    (Text 2)
M: Hello, I’m calling to ask whether you can send someone to take a look at our ceiling. It’s been leaking since last night’s rainstorm.
W: Hi, Mr. Stevenson. I’m afraid we’re already booked up for this week. But I think we can make it next Monday.

    (Text 3)
    W: How was the training?
M: The training was a great challenge. I learned a lot.
W: I’m glad you see it that way. Not a lot of people take a positive attitude towards training.
    M: Anyway, I’m glad I went.

    (Text 4)
M: Have you seen my blue sweater? It was on the back of my chair before I went to the meeting, but now it’s disappeared.
W: Are you sure you left it there? When I came in the office to remind you about the meeting I didn’t see it.

    (Text 5)
M: Listen to this. The Education Minister is now saying that teachers deserve a pay rise. That’s a complete change of opinion!
W: I’m glad to hear it. He’s been listening to public opinion, obviously.

    (Text 6)
M: Hi, my name is Tom Smith. I saw a sign that said all visitors need to sign in here.
W: That’s correct. May I ask your reason for visiting City Hall today?
M: Actually, I’d like to take a tour. I’m interested in historic buildings.
W: Is that so? We’ve had more visitors ever since the regional museum opened.
M: Oh, I was just there. Do you have any idea where I should start?
W: Here, take this brochure. It has some information about the building’s history and shows you where the points of interest are. Let me know if you have any questions.

    (Text 7)
M: Have you met our new marketing manager? I heard he came from our Chicago branch and started work here last Monday.
W: Yes, I saw Mr. Wang in the staff meeting on Friday for the first time. He looked very energetic and organized. In particular, I liked the way he developed our new marketing strategies. He encouraged participants to share their ideas in an informal and inviting way.
M: It sounds like he has a constructive approach. I hope he will bring us more enthusiasm and help us increase our profits in the end.
W: That’s exactly what I want from him. By the way, there is another meeting that he is supposed to chair on Tuesday. You’ll be there, won’t you?

    (Text 8)
W: Good morning. You have reached Dr. Henry’s office. This is Laura. How may I help you?
M: Hi, this is Joel Phillips. I’d like to reschedule my appointment today at three o’clock to another time tomorrow. Is that possible?
W: I’m afraid the appointments are already fully booked for this week. Mr. Phillips, you’ve already waited two weeks to make this reservation and you really should have your teeth examined. Is there any way you can come today as arranged?
M: I know, but I am at an urgent meeting with my client right now and I might not make it to the three o’clock appointment. Well, I’ll try to conclude everything quickly in the meeting so that I can arrive at your clinic on time. Thank you.

    (Text 9)
M: Today I’m talking with 15-year-old Adriana Brown. She built her own bicycle generator. Adriana, can you tell us about your project? How did you get started?
W: Well, I’ve helped my dad with some of his projects. But I decided I wanted to do my own project this time. So I researched ideas on the Internet. I decided on a bicycle generator because it’s really useful. I can use it to power my computer.
M: So, how did you build it?
W: First, I found plans for generators. I chose a simple design and made a first draft of the project. Then, my dad made some suggestions and I made another draft. After that, I started to look for materials. The only problem was that I didn’t have a lot of money, so it was difficult!
M: So, what did you do?
W: Well, I went to a bicycle shop and a car repair shop. I told them about my project. They gave me some extra parts.
    M: Oh, that was nice.
W: Yeah, it really was … When I got all the materials, I was ready to put it all together.
M: Well, I think it’s great. Very impressive!

    (Text 10)
M: OK, are you all settled? Well, first of all, welcome to Cardiff University. I’m here to explain what we can offer you.
Now, as a new student at the university, you will probably need some sort of guidance to help you to use the library effectively to study and research. Some of you have asked about a guided tour but we find this rather confuses people. So, in this first week, we run a series of talks which focus on different aspects of the library and its resources.

OK, now let me give you an outline of what’s available to you. You’ll find that the computers are increasingly used as a research tool. Many students do most of their research on the Internet and the library computers are permanently online. Having found what you need, you’ll find you can readily save texts on your personal computer space to print off when you need.
Naturally we do still have the full range of classic reference books for you to use and there are several copies of each one. This is because some of you may prefer to borrow a book rather than sit in the library. There is a restricted loan time on these so that they are not missing from the shelves for too long. Although there is a Section Manager for each part of the library, they are very busy and so, if you do get stuck looking for things, you should ask the relevant Cataloguing Assistant. As your Training Supervisor, I just oversee your work for a week and will not be around after this initial week.
