My teacher said to a student, “Give me your phone.”

We all looked in surprise. Kyle, a student who I never saw text in class, gave the teacher his phone.

When the teacher left, two students who I often saw text in class started boasting about how they sent text messages and never got caught.

“Kyle, you are stupid! I put my phone under my desk so it looks like I’m looking at my textbooks” one of them said.

“Isn’t it funny that we always text and never get caught” the other one laughed.

They must have thought they were smart, because they never got caught and Kyle did. But which situation is worse: getting caught, or getting away with it? Rules are there for a reason.

These two students might not have got caught, but neither of them had good grades. They didn’t pay any attention to the class, and I think they will keep doing this.

People don’t just break big rules and get thrown into jail overnight. They take it one step at a time, starting with smaller rules. Kyle might have gotten caught, but at least he learned a good lesson. He will not break the rules in the future, so he will learn more in class and stay out of trouble. It’s smarter not to break small rules.

    1. Why did the teacher ask Kyle to hand in his phone?

    A. Because she wanted to find out what Kyle just texted.

    B. Because Kyle was playing with his phone in class.

    C. Because the students wanted to see Kyle’s new phone.

    D. Because two students wanted to use his phone.

    2. What does the underlined word “boasting” mean in Chinese?

    A. 吹嘘   B. 讨论   C. 报告   D. 嘲笑

    3. The two students in the writer’s class felt quite ________because they were never caught by the teacher.

    A. surprised   B. calm C. proud   D. unhappy

    4. What would the writer agree?

    A. Kyle was a silly student.      B. Following the rules was smart.

    C. Learning to text was easy.     D. Being punished wasn’t serious.

    5. What does the text mainly tell us?

    A. The teacher shouldn’t take Kyle’s phone away.

    B. Kyle should learn something from the two boys.

    C. Following rules makes people keep out of trouble.

    D. If a person breaks rules, he’ll break laws suddenly.

The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile laboratory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers. So that they can discover what the old really need while driving. Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and happiness among older people. It may make them become more lonely.

Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing some new technologies that are used inside cars. They want to make it possible to help older drivers to continue driving into later life. These technologies include custommade navigation(定制导航) tools, night vision(可视) systems and intelligent speed systems. Phil Blythe explains, “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for keeping their independence, giving them the freedom to get out without having to depend on others. But we all have to accept that fact: as we get older, we do everything more and more slowly. As a result, it's difficult for older people to avoid any possible dangers while they are driving. And many of them will lose confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to.”

Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains, “The DriveLAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to solve these problems.” For example, most of us would expect older drivers to slower than everyone else. But surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones(区域), they try to keep at a constant__speed. Some of them even break the speed limit(限制) and face to be punished. We're going out of our way to set up systems which can control their speed as a way of preventing that.

“We hope that our work will help with technological solutions to make sure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”

    6. What is the purpose of the DriveLAB?

    A. To repair some old cars.

    B. To design new types of cars.

    C. To find out older drivers' problems.

    D. To teach people traffic rules.

    7. Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe?

    A. It keeps them independent.

    B. It helps them save time.

    C. It builds up their creativity.

    D. It is good for their health.

    8. What do researchers hope to do for older drivers?

    A. Improve their driving skills.

    B. Help them continue to drive cars.

    C. Recycle iron from their old cars.

    D. Organize a driving club for the old.

    9. The expression “constant speed” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________ in Chinese.

    A. 超速           B. 限速             C. 匀速           D. 极速

    10. What is the best title for the passage?

    A. A New Model Electric Car

    B. A Solution to Traffic Problem

    C. Service from DriveLAB

    D. Keeping Older Drivers on the Road

Every visitor to London knows who Madam Tussaud (杜莎夫人蜡像馆)is or was. And almost every visitor has seen her, an old lady of 81, standing at the entrance of her own exhibition. She is made of wax(), like all the models of people in the exhibition.

Born in 1760, she learned the art of making life-size portraits(肖像)in wax when she was a young girl in France. In 1802 she came to England. By 1835, her exhibition had a permanent home in Baker Street, London. It was already one of London's famous sights. What was the secret of her success? Her portraits were life-size and convincing. She paid great attention to details and spent a lot of money on the right clothes and effective lighting. She also included true relics in the exhibition—not only can you see Louis XVI, the King of France, but you can see also the actual knife which cut off his head! And Madame Tussaud's portraits were always up to date and new.

Thousands of people still line up to see portraits of the famous and the infamous. What is  the attraction?Perhaps it is simply because people love to stare at the famous. At Madame Tussaud’s you don’t have to wait for hours in the rain to have a look at the Queen in a carriage or Muhammad Ali getting off a plane. There they are, just a metre or two away.

How do the organizers of Madame Tussaud’s decide which people to include in the 3exhibition? Every year they run a public survey which helps them to choose. They ask the visitors to the exhibition to say who their hero of heroine is.This survey produces some interesting results. At the moment Sir Winston Churchill (丘吉尔)and Superman are rivals for first place as hero of all time. And President Amin of Uganda comes second only to Hiilter as the world’s most hated and feared man.

Of course they have to change the portraits quite frequently. Some times they take a modal away, but public opinion is hard to tell. When Nixon had to leave the White House, he also lost his place in Madame Tussaud's. But as he gets back in the news again, after his visit to China, he may appear again in wax. Madame Tussaud's is more than an exhibition. It is also an excellent sign in the public eye.

    11. We know from the passage that Madame Tussaud may have died ______.

    A. in 1835.        B. in 1841.         C. before 1835.      D. after 1802.

    12. Why could Madame Tussaud win success? Because ______ .

    A. she was good at the art of making life-size portraits in wax.

    B. she had a permanent home in England.

    C. she succeeded in making her portraits life-size and convincing.

    D. she selected true relics which had something to do with her portraits.

    13. Thousands of people line up to visit Madame Tussaud's ______.

    A. to have a view of Madame Tussaud.

    B. to learn the secret of her success.

    C. see the portrait of Louis XVI.

    D. because they were attracted by the famous and the infamous.

    14. It is the organizers and______ that decide(s) which people to be on show.

    A. the government           B. public opinion

    C. Madame Tussaud          D. visitors

    15. To include or to take the portraits away depends on _________.

    A. many factors            B. people's love or hatred.

    C. one's position.          D. one's achievements

    四.七选五

Many parents like setting family rules for their kids. When kids break the rules, parents will give them some punishments. 1.        In fact, when you tell your kids about a new rule, you should talk with them about the price they should pay for breaking the rule — what the punishment will be.

2        That means punishments shouldn't include violence and threats (暴力和威胁). For example, if you find your son smoking, you may limit his social activities for two weeks. You should punish your kids only in ways you have discussed with them before the rule is broken. A study shows that the most popular punishment is to limit kids' TV time.

3         Punishment is a way to express your anger, but it's not a very good one. Try to share your feelings of anger, disappointment or sadness with your kids. 4.         When your kids know what they have done has made you sad, they will feel sorry. When they know their actions influence you greatly, they will obey the rules better.

5         If your rules or ways of punishment make them unhappy or under a lot of pressure, are they helpful?

    A. Punishments you set should be fair and proper.

    B. We have to follow the rules.

    C. But the punishments aren't included in the rules.

    D. Rules are made to help your kids behave better.

    E. It's understandable that you'll be angry when rules are broken.

    F. Punishment is helpless for kids.

    G. That may have a better result.
