Earlier this year, China’s education system announced a new “Double Reduction” policy (双减政策), “Double Reduction” refers to a reduction in the total amount and time of school homework and a reduction of after-school training programs.
“The policy really helps me.” Shen Yuzhe, a 13-year-old boy from Beijing said. He is happy that he has less homework than before and he can finish it at school with no need to take it home, “I’m also happy to find there are fewer exams. Besides, teachers now teach at a much slower pace so that we have enough time to understand what we have learned. We don’t need to buy workbooks any more and the exercises are mainly from the textbook.” Shen Yuzhe said.
“The best thing about the ’Double Reduction’ is the increased time in after-school activities such as dancing, volleyball and drama.” Zhang Hangming from Tianjin is also excited. He has joined a group called “leadership development” learning all kinds of useful skills. He likes it because teachers are also giving them more chances to learn from real life. For example, they went to research plants in a field during a science class. He believes that is a much better way to learn than just hitting the books.
Some people welcome the policy while others are still worried. Yu Zhiyue, a middle school student in Jiangsu still feels tired. “With the ‘Double Reduction’, I have really got less homework to do. But my mother is worried that I will lose the chance to review what I’ve learnt in class without enough homework. So I have lots of after-school classes. Since I can only take these classes on weekdays now, weekdays have become especially long and tiring for me. From Monday to Friday, I need to take online classes at home after I come back from school.” she said. “My parents told me the policy had changed but the competition had not gone away.”

If a man’s best friend is a dog, then who is a dog’s best friend? That would be Rover, Glow, Ivan, or Raina. These four dogs donated blood(捐赠) to other dogs. And they did it without having to travel far from home. They visited an animal bloodmobile (血液车).
Similar to the Red Cross vehicles for humans, the University of Pennsylvania’s animal bloodmobile goes to where the donors are to make it easier to give. Kym Marryott is manager of Penn’s Animal Blood Bank. “You don’t really think about it until you need it,” Marryott said. “Just like us, dogs need blood too.”
Like humans, not every dog can donate blood. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be younger than 8 years old. About 150 dogs take part in the program. Each donates three or four pints a year, which can help animals suffering from illnesses like cancer or an accident like being hit by a car. One pint can save up to three dogs. Just like people, the dogs get a snack and a heart-shaped “U of P Blood Donor” sticker after donating. In addition, they receive free dog food to take home.
Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old black dog, Raina, to the bloodmobile last week. “I was excited that she had the right blood which could help another dog out,” she said. “We’ll do it again.”

A king once offered a prize. Anyone could get it if he painted the best picture of peace. Many famous artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures and among them there were only two he really liked. But he had to choose between them.
The first picture was of a quiet lake. Around the lake were peaceful mountains. Above them was a blue sky with white clouds. Everyone seeing this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The second picture had mountains too. But few trees could be seen. Above them was a dark, angry sky. A heavy rainstorm was happening. Down the side of the mountain ran a powerful waterfall. It did not look peaceful at all. However, the king felt it was special. At midnight, the king looked carefully at the second picture again. Suddenly, he found behind the waterfall a small tree growing between two rocks. A mother bird built her home in the tree. There, in the middle of all the noise of rushing water and frightening skies, that mother bird sat in perfect peace.
Which picture do you think the king chose? The king chose the second picture because he thought it better expressed peace. “Peace does not mean you must be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or pain. The real meaning of peace is to be right in the middle of all those difficult experiences, and still be calm and sure of yourself in your heart,” said the king.
