In fact, China was the first country to use paper money. The earliest paper money was the jiaozi. People used it during the Northern Song Dynasty (960—1279).
For about 1,000 years, paper money has played a big part in our lives. But things have changed in recent years. In China, paper money is getting less popular. More people are paying for things with WeChat Wallet and Alipay mobile apps.

There are a few reasons for this. First of all, not every country is going cashless (无现金的). People in some countries still prefer to use paper money. There is also the danger of hacking (黑客攻击). You must have read or heard of the love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions(《红楼梦》). But can you imagine the two singing opera(歌剧) in English?
Recently, the novel has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan. It is welcomed by audiences(观众) at home and abroad.
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds (背景) in both Chinese and American cultures. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Huang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin instead of the rise and fall of the Jia family and tried to write a heart-broken tragedy (悲剧) that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes (服装) and stage settings(布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her on the stage.
It isn’t the first time that they have made an opera adapted (改编) from Chinese literature. The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to western audiences, spreading Chinese culture to the world. They are happy to have made a contribution to the land where their parents were born.

C.written by Timmy Yip D.performed in many languages

D.Those soldiers help people in danger and protect our land in time.

(2023·重庆巴南·统考一模)Shu embroidery(蜀绣) is one of the most famous embroidery styles in China. It’s well-known for its strong expression and smooth needlework.
The characteristics are greatly influenced by geographical environment, customs and cultures. As we all know, people in Sichuan Province enjoy a slow lifestyle, so when embroidering, they are usually patient and willing to spend time on pursuing the form’s intricacy(复杂精致) and elegance (优雅). This could be the reason why Shu embroidery was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) in 2006.
Making beautiful Shu embroidery products is never easy. It needs super workmanship(卓越工艺).
Meng Dezhi, 59, was born to a family of embroiderers. She was one of the most talented employees at the Chengdu Shu embroidery factory. The long and repetitive nature of the process often challenges her. Even for an experienced master like Meng, finishing a piece needs several days or even a few months. And in winter, when her hands and feet are freezing, things become even more difficult, but her love for the work has encouraged Meng to continue.
“These experiences may sometimes discourage me, but the love for Shu embroidery always gives me courage to continue,” said Meng. Meng has also popularized the culture of Shu embroidery when the tradition was at the risk of fading(衰落). Many cheap products are made by modern machines. In 2005, the factory where Meng worked was forced to close. To make a living and pass along the traditional technique, Meng rented a small space of 10 square meters to teach Shu embroidery skills.
“In the early days, I set up the company just for living, but now I really feel that I have the responsibility to pass on Shu embroidery skills to young people, to let it run from generation to generation,” she told China Daily.
15.Why is Shu embroidery more special than other types of embroidery?
A.Because it is characterized by intricacy and elegance.
B.Because it changes local people’s lifestyles.
C.Because it is made by modern machines.
D.Because it mainly includes pictures of flowers.
16.What are the characteristics of Shu Embroidery?
①strong expression ②smooth needlework ③intricacy ④elegance
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.①②③④
17.Which mind map shows the right structure of the passage?
A.
B.
C.
D.
18.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Embroidery. B.Shu Embroidery.
C.The introduction of Embroidery. D.The history of Shu Embroidery.
(2023·广东惠州·统考二模)Last term I took a beginner’s course in video art. The course taught me about the development of modern arts, and how media (媒体) works.
Mr. Maxwell, the course teacher, encouraged us to make and edit (剪辑) videos. I made my first video which was about food. I believe food is a good way to learn more about cultural differences and social traditions, and trying food is a way for me to understand the world and make friends. I believe a video about food can best explain my values and ideas about the world.
We also learned about performance art. Performance artists use their bodies and behaviors to guide people’s thoughts about the world. Once, Mr. Maxwell gave us paint, glue and colored paper, and let us do whatever we wanted to in an empty art room. At first, we just drew some flowers and animals on the walls, however, later, we poured paint on the walls and even broke the colored paper. This art experiment showed that when there are no rules, people can have strong destructive power.
Our final project was shooting a performance art video. I shot a video of myself taking care of an egg. I needed to wash the egg and talk to it every 15 minutes. I discovered my social life, rest time and study time were interrupted (打断) by taking care of the egg. I wanted to use this video to show the difficulties of being a mother, and encourage society to think of motherhood as a real job.

A.Wide. B.Creative. C.Patient. D.Broken.
22.What does the writer want to teach us through his/her art video?

23.What might be the best title for the text?

(2023·重庆巴南·统考一模)Can anyone be an astronaut?
Of course not. You don’t have a science degree but most astronauts do. Most of them are pilots too. Life in a spaceship is hard so you must have a healthy body and mind. You need to be easy-going, patient, and helpful to spend so much time in a small space with other people.
What’s the training like?
People have to train for a year to learn how to stay healthy and safe. They practice space walking and living in zero gravity. They train in difficult conditions to learn how to solve problems and to work in a team. Everyday tasks like eating, washing and sleeping can be difficult on a spaceship. There is no running water so you have to wash with wet tissues; it’s hard to enjoy the dry food that astronauts have to eat. And to sleep you must cover your eyes because the sun rises every 90 minutes on the International Space Station. You also have to tie yourself to something so you don’t fly away!
What health problems do astronauts have?
Life in zero gravity causes changes to our bodies. Bones and muscles(肌肉) become thin and weak so you must do a lot of exercise in space to stay fit and to help the heart move blood around your body. Astronauts often get backaches because you grow in space—up to 8 centimeters! It’s also common to have headaches and to feel sick, especially at the beginning. You must have vitamins to take the place of fresh fruit and vegetables. But you don’t have to put on sun cream because space suits protect your skin.
Are you still interested?
So now you know. If you want to go to space, study hard, learn to fly and take care of your body and mind.
27.What does the writer think of the life in a spaceship?
A.Interesting. B.Boring. C.Useful. D.Hard.

29.Which one is true according to the passage?
A.People have to train for two years to learn how to stay healthy and safe.
B.Astronauts have to tie themselves to something in order not to fly away.
C.Astronauts can’t grow in space.
D.You must put on sun cream in a spaceship.
30.What is the passage mainly about?
A.What we need to know to become an astronaut.
B.Why young people are interested in space trips.
C.What problems astronauts must solve in space.
D.Why we need to train hard before a space trip.
