The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food healthier to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unhealthy to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps 80% of all human illness is related to food and 40% of cancer is related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers realised that things commonly used to keep colours in meats, and other food additives(添加剂) caused cancer. Yet, these additives which cause cancer remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the wrappings of foods are helpful or harmful.
The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give medicine to their animals, and because of this, medicine has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes similar things are given to animals not for their health, but just to make a lot of money.
The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.
24.Things that are used to keep colours in meats are ________.
    A.harmful B.useful C.helpful D.healthy
25.Why do some farmers give medicine to their animals?
A.To make healthy food for people to eat.
    B.To make more money.
C.To change the colour of the animals.
    D.To make their animals healthier.
26.Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Some wrappings of food are harmful.
B.Farmers try to make more money on the market by fattening their animals.
    C.Food is related to illness.
D.The additives which we eat are all direct.
27.What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To ask people to eat healthily.
B.To show how to make food healthier.
C.To explain how additives influence health.
D.To help people learn to control additives.

Long, long ago, there lived an old man and his wife. Their only pet was a dog named Shiro. Indeed, they loved him so much that whenever they had something good to eat, they would give it to Shiro.
Next door to this good old couple lived an old man who was cruel (残酷的). Whenever Shiro happened to look into his kitchen, he at once kicked him or threw something at him.

The old man thought that something might be hidden beneath the tree. So he ran back to the house, took out his spade and began to dig the ground at that spot. After digging for some time, he saw some gold coins, and the deeper he dug, the more gold coins he found. At last, all the gold coins lay shining on the ground.
The old neighbour next door began to think that he, too, would find a fortune ( 财 富 ) if he had Shiro. So a few days later he went to the couple’s house to ask to borrow Shiro for a short time. The good old man was too kind-hearted to refuse his neighbour, so they agreed to lend him the dog. The old neighbour returned to his home. He then took his spade to his own field and stopped in front of a big tree.
He forced Shiro to dig and look for gold coins for him. The old man was very pleased when he saw the dog begin to scratch and dig. However, there was nothing to be found but a bad smell. At last, he found a rubbish heap (垃圾堆). Instead of blaming his own greed (贪婪) for his disappointment, the old neighbour blamed the poor dog. Finally, he killed Shiro in the place that he had dug,

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident when you are studying. But unluckily, most students don’t know how to take notes.
If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that’s great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may focus on lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say something important again and again.
Don’t try to write down every word in class, or you might miss some important points. Some students really learn better with the help of these notes.
Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher to repeat what you’ve missed. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can’t follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class. Comparing your notes with your classmates’ can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct some mistakes.
Good note-taking takes time. If you decide to recopy your notes every evening, you’ll surely have less time to watch TV. But you’ll save time in the coming test.
