There is a traditional toy called taiping nijiaojiao. It is a clay toy and also a whistle (哨子) in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. It has a history of over 1,000 years.
Taiping nijiaojiao is made of the mud from the local mountain. It takes more than ten steps to make the clay toy, and the key step is to knead (捏) it with your hands. You can knead the clay toy into anything, like animals and plants. The blowhole is the most difficult part to make, for the size of the blowhole makes a difference to the sound. While coloring, you can use traditional cultural elements (元素) that carry good meanings. It’s hard to make taiping nijiaojiao. But when you finally make it, you will feel proud of yourself.
Zhou Baokang, a lover of folk art, learned how to make the clay toy from local artists about 20 years ago. He wants more people to know about it, so he has opened a museum to introduce the clay toy. He teaches kids how to make the clay toy, too.
There are many traditional art forms in China, but some of them have been lost. Luckily, the traditional clay toy taiping nijiaojiao is kept to this day.

I grew up in the countryside. I didn’t understand what it brought to me until I became an adult(成年人). It helped me learn more special skills than my peers(同龄人) who grew up in cities.
I learned to cook at about 10 years old. The first skill I learned was making dough(面团). Since my parents often came home late, a prepared dough would help my family have supper sooner. I thought it would be easy—just mix water and flour(面粉), right? Not quite! First I made the dough too soft. Then I made it too hard. But as I kept trying, I learned the trick.
Later, I cooked fried dishes and things like dumplings. I fell in love with cooking. It’s a good way to relax. Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. Though it was hard work, the experience taught me things that many of my peers still didn’t know. For example, the part of a potato that has sprouts can be planted as a seed. I also learned that the fruits of the peanut and ginger plant grow under the soil. I once discussed this with my friends from the city. They thought it was a pity that they didn’t have the chance to learn these things in their lives.
Some might say we can learn these things from the textbooks. But it can’t compare to the joy of learning firs-thand, watching plants blossom and grow. It brings a new way to look at the world. You’ll love everything on your plate.
This may be why I’m so happy to hear that labor education(劳动教育) has been required in China. Students in primary and middle schools have at least one class every week to learn basic household skills like cooking and cleaning. These special skills will help you for the rest of your life.

There is a traditional toy called taiping nijiaojiao. It is a clay toy and also a whistle (哨子) in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. It has a history of over 1,000 years.
Taiping nijiaojiao is made of the mud from the local mountain. It takes more than ten steps to make the clay toy, and the key step is to knead (捏) it with your hands. You can knead the clay toy into anything, like animals and plants. The blowhole is the most difficult part to make, for the size of the blowhole makes a difference to the sound. I grew up in the countryside. I didn’t understand what it brought to me until I became an adult(成年人). It helped me learn more special skills than my peers(同龄人) who grew up in cities.
I learned to cook at about 10 years old. The first skill I learned was making dough(面团). Since my parents often came home late, a prepared dough would help my family have supper sooner. I thought it would be easy—just mix water and flour(面粉), right? Not quite! First I made the dough too soft. Then I made it too hard. But as I kept trying, I learned the trick.
Later, I cooked fried dishes and things like dumplings. I fell in love with cooking. It’s a good way to relax. Besides cooking, I did a lot of farm work in my childhood. I got to know how to plant vegetables. Though it was hard work, the experience taught me things that many of my peers still didn’t know. For example, the part of a potato that has sprouts can be planted as a seed. I also learned that the fruits of the peanut and ginger plant grow under the soil. I once discussed this with my friends from the city. They thought it was a pity that they didn’t have the chance to learn these things in their lives.

A DIY bookmark for my favourite book
Last week I took part in our school’s Reading & Bookmark-making activity. The purpose of the activity was to help us enjoy reading our favourite book. My favorite book is Harry Potter series. I love science books and fantasy books. I think Harry Potter is magic and amazing.
In order to make a bookmark, I prepared a card, scissors, glue and so on. First, I cut the card into long strips. And then I drew a picture of a monkey on the left and wrote a famous saying “Nothing is impossible if you put your heart into it.” on the right to encourage me not to give up when facing difficulties. At last, I glued it to a thin piece of wood.
Although I met some difficulties in this process, I never gave up and I am proud of myself.
