A beach clean-up brings people together to remove rubbish from a beach. My husband, Josh, and I go to as many beach clean-ups as we can. We even wrote about how many beach clean-ups we have joined on our blog. It is one of our favorite things to do.
You might not think that picking up rubbish sounds like fun. But cleaning up a beach, especially if there is a lot of rubbish, is something that is well worth doing. A beach clean-up is a good way to help the environment, get exercise and meet new people. Some beaches are covered with so much rubbish that cleaning them up might seem impossible. But you can achieve a lot in just a few hours with a group of volunteers. By the time you are done, you will be encouraged by the results. You might have even made a few new friends!
My first time joining a beach clean-up was in Costa Rica, Our group walked 30 minutes along a trail（小路）to a small beach called "Playa Basura", which means "rubbish beach". A lot of rubbish is washed up on the beach there. Playa Basura is right next to a nature reserve（自然保护区）. The beach often looks like it is covered with colorful rocks. But the rocks are just small pieces of plastic. Most of the rubbish comes from other areas. It washes down rivers and into the ocean. Then the currents（水流）carry the rubbish to Playa Basura.
Our group worked hard for about two hours and filled over 100 trash bags. The difference was amazing. But every year the rainy season brings more rubbish to Playa Basura. So, it is lucky that there is a clean-up at Playa Basura every year. Rubbish on beaches like Playa basura won't end until people stop rubbish from getting into the oceans. But every beach clean-up helps.

New research says mosquitoes（蚊子）are most attracted to a special color.
The researchers from the University of Washington tracked（追踪）the behavior of female mosquitoes when they were given different types of things with different colors and smells. The researchers put the mosquitoes into small labs and offer them different things, like a colored dot or a person's hand. When mosquitoes look for food, they first find that you're around by smelling carbon dioxide from your breath. That causes them to look for certain colors and shapes that could indicate（暗示）food, the researchers explained.
When there was no smell like carbon dioxide in the lab, the mosquitoes paid no attention to the colored dot, no matter what color it was. But once researchers sprayed（喷洒）carbon dioxide in the lab, they flew toward dots that were red, orange or black. Dots that were green, blue, or purple were not noticed.
"Light colors are dangerous to mosquitoes, which is why many insects avoid biting in direct sunlight," a biologist says. "Mosquitoes are easily affected to death because of being short of water. But darker colors are different. They can take in and remain heat, allowing mosquitoes to locate（锁定）a host."
