CAMP — FLORIDA
Have you ever wanted to step into the shoes of an astronaut and experience rocket flight and cosmic (宇 宙的) exploration? On this journey to Florida you will come as close as possible to this experience without actually traveling into space.
Part 1 Visit the Planetarium (天文馆)
From traditional star displays and cultural shows that detail the importance of astronomy around the world, to feature presentations that show the depths of outer space, the planetarium has something for curious stargazers of all ages.
Part 2 Take Part in Mission Space
What’s it like to be an astronaut? You’ll find out on Mission Space! Before you board, you’ll train for
your mission on the X-2 Deep Space Shuttle at the International Space Training Center (ISTC). Each member of your 4-cadet (学员) crew will assume an important role: navigator, pilot, commander or engineer.

This 90-minute encounter at the Space Center in Cape features a buffet-style lunch along with a personalized presentation from one of celebrated astronauts. At the end of the event, there’s a brief question- and-answer session, plus time for family photos with the astronaut. Astronauts describe what it’s like to live in space — eating, exercising, sleeping and training. No topic is off-limits.

Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours (绕路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents’ home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement (限制) and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They’d get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons.
We eventually arrived at my parents’ doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of journey — and the best part of yourself.

C. To play a game with them. D. To let them cool down.
27. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Charm of the Detour B. The Road to Bravery

C
A study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important. These experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they often have higher IQs. Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.
Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at distinguishing different sound patterns. Her team of researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern “A-B-B” . Another order was mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern “A-B- C” . The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the “A-B-B” pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive to where it occurred in the order.
Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is the building block of words and grammar. “Position is key to language,” she says. “if something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference: ‘John caught the bear. ’ is very different from ‘The bear caught John.’’’
Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet, or smartphones — no matter how educational — doesn’t appear to be enough for children’s brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American babies. They expected the first group who’d watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of learning as the second group who were brought face-to-face with the same sounds. Instead they found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish between similar Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies — regardless of whether they had watched the video or listened to the audio — learned nothing.
28. According to the passage, what affects the development of a child’s brain?
A. The shape and weight of the brain. B. A Child’s intelligence.
C. Experiences in a child’s early years. D. The connection with other children.
29. What did Judit Gervain and her team find in the experiment?
A. Babies identify different sound patterns.
B. The word order is relevant to meaning.
C. A certain brain region processes language.
D. Babies can well understand different words.
30. What do we know from Judit Gervain’s words in Paragraph 3?
A. The order of sounds is important in grammar.
B. Different orders have different meanings.
C. Different languages have different grammar.
D. Grammar is important in learning languages.
31. What is the main conclusion from the study led by Patricia Kuhl?
A. Educational apps on smartphones are good to babies’ brains.
B. Foreign languages benefit babies’ brain development.
C. Listening to different languages develops babies’ brains.
D. Social communication improves babies’ brain development.
D
Loneliness is a global issue. The UK appointed a minister for loneliness, the first in the world. In Australia, Victorian state MP (议员) Fiona Patten is calling for the same here. Federal MP Andrew Giles said, “I’m convinced we need to consider responding to loneliness as a responsibility of government.”
Then what do cities have to do with loneliness? The way we build and organize our cities can help or block social connection. Some smart designs in cities can help encourage potential connection.
Have you ever waited at a railway station, killing time without communicating with the person next to you? Michelle Curnow proposed to change railway carriages into “sensory experience cabins” . They can attract people to explore the inbuilt gallery spaces and listen to other people’s stories while commuting. Who said commuting had to be boring?
Having a pet is an effective way to deal with loneliness, but people often don’t have enough time to care for one. Zi Ye came up with Puppy Society. It connects a pet with multiple owners. The dogs are housed in a shared place where the owners come to pet the dog.
Do you have a hard time eating alone? Fanhui Ding came up with a student-run restaurant for the University of Melbourne. Students get credit working on the farms that supply the restaurant, which can be used to pay for a meal. People also get discounts for dining at the same table, encouraging students to communicate over food.
Beverley Wang looked at loneliness in the aging population. She came up with a project called “Nurture”, for which she designed a kindergarten co-housed with a nursing home. Designing spaces for storytelling, she brought the elderly into the kindergarten as informal learning assistants, giving them a sense of purpose.
These are only some of the ways to deal with loneliness. It has been proved that a less lonely future is
indeed possible. Without claiming to solve loneliness, design can be an important tool in response to it.
32. What does the author intend to prove by mentioning Fiona Patten in Paragraph 1?
A. The first minister for loneliness is an Australian.
B. The government should make rules about loneliness.
C. The problem of loneliness deserves urgent action.
D. State MPs play an important part in city development.
33.What does Zi Ye’s design encourage people to do?
A. Communicate over food. B. Connect with pets more often.
C. Take care of dogs in turn. D. Share personal experiences with others.
34. How does the project “Nurture” benefit elder people?
A. By offering them working opportunities. B. By employing them as the informal staff.
C. By lifting their awareness of self-value. D. By asking children to tell them stories.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A. Feel Lonely? Build Connection B. Loneliness Becomes a Global Issue
C. Ready to Fight Loneliness? Join Us D. Smart City Designs Help Fight Loneliness

Americans are obsessed(着迷的) with telling their life stories. This phenomenon isn’t simply the product of the technological world. 36 People are eager to tell stories and are fascinated by those of others. Even at preschool, “sharing time” is a common Monday-morning activity where the students will sit in a circle and take turns telling a story about something they did over the weekend.
37 In many Asian countries, talking about and drawing attention to oneself can be seen as socially inappropriate. People are often unwilling to share their life stories and do not encourage others to do so. But there are also times Asians do share their stories. 38 Asians believe that a person is largely decided by his or her social status and relationships, leaving little reason to broadcast detailed and revealing personal stories to establish a unique self.
However, the more unique Americans try their best to be, the greater their need to feel connected with others is. In their culture of individuality, relationships are highly mobile and can be easily formed or dissolved (破裂) . Sharing personal stories brings them closer through the exchange of thoughts, feelings and desires. 39 But this motivation is not nearly as strong among Asians, for whom social relations are generally unconditional, obligatory (义不容辞的) and stable, and therefore require little maintenance.
40 American parents encourage children to share their stories and create opportunities to re- experience the past with children. Asian parents, by contrast, engage their children in telling personal stories less frequently. When they do talk about a child’s experiences, they are not particularly concerned with parent- child bonding but tend to focus on disciplining the child.
A. They tend to focus more on outer facts than personal details.
B. It helps them shape their “selves” and makes them who they are.
C. Interestingly, this obsession is not necessarily shared in other cultures.
D. Talking about personal stories is to cheer people on with positive feelings.
E. It connects them like many different points, holding their society together.
F. Sharing personal stories is also an essential part in everyday conversations.
G. Parents in America and Asia differ in how they share memories with children.
