A Brown University sleep researcher has some advice for people who run high schools: Don't start classes so early in the morning. It may not be that the students are lazy or their parents have failed to allow enough bedtime. Instead, it may be that biologically(生理上) these sleepyhead students aren't used to the early hour.
"Maybe these kids are being asked to rise at the wrong time for their bodies, " says Mary Carskadon, a professor looking at problem of teenage sleep at Brown's School of Medicine.
Carskadon is trying to understand more about thee early school time in teenage years. She and her team are trying to learn more about how the biological changes of teenagers affect (影响)sleep needs and patterns(模式).
Carskadon says her work suggests that teenagers may need more sleep than they did at childhood, no less, as commonly thought.
Sleep patterns change too, as any parent of a teenager can prove. Most teenagers prefer to stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. But it's not just a matter of choice ——their bodies are going through a change of sleep patterns.
All of this makes the change from middle school to high school ——which may start one hour earlier in the morning —— all the more difficult, Carskadon says. With their increased need for sleep and their biological clocks set on the "sleep late, rise late” pattern, teenagers get up against difficulties. A short sleep on a desktop may be their body's way of saying "I need a timeout. "
    48. Why does Carskadon suggest that high schools should not start classes so early in the morning?
    A. Because it is biologically difficult for students to rise early.
    B. Because it is really hard for parents to allow enough bedtime.
    C. Because students work so late at night that they can't get up early.
    D. Because students are so lazy that they don't like to go to school early.
    49. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. Health care of teenagers.
    B. Problems in teenage learning.
    C. Sleep difficulties of teenagers. 1
    D. Changes in teenage sleep needs and patterns.

Sir Steven Redgrave, Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals
“In 1997I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病). Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the doctors said there was no reason for me to stop training and competing. That was it ——the encouragement I needed. I could| still be a winner if I believed in myself. I am not saying that it isn't difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn't finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way. ”
    Karcn Pickering, Swimming World Champion
"I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that kind of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success —— you can't follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you'll be a step closer to achieving them. "
    Kirsten Best, Poet & Writer
"When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can't achieve something. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to give all your attention to the things you want to do. When I feel stressed, it helps a lot to repeat words such as 'calm', 'peace' or 'focus', either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological (心理的)tool”.

    A. Difficulties stopped his career.
    B. Illness never prevented him winning.

It was a cold winter day. A woman drove up to the Rainbow Bridge tollbooth(收费站). “I’m paying for myself, and for the six cars behind me, "she said with a smile, handing over seven tickets. One after another, the next six drivers arriving at the tollbooth were told, "Some lady up ahead already paid for you. ”
It turned out that the woman, Natalie Smith, had read something in a friend's home: "Practise random(随机的) kindness and senseless acts of beauty. "The sentence impressed her so much that she copied it down.
Judy Foreman spotted the same sentence on a warehouse wall far away from home. When it stayed on her mind for days, she decided to write it at the bottom of all her letters, "like a message from above. "Her husband, Frank, liked the sentence so much that he put it up on the classroom wall for his students, one of whom was the daughter of Alice Johnson, a local news reporter. Alice put it in the newspaper, adding that though she liked it, she didn't know where it came from or what it really meant.
Two days later, Alice got a call from Anne Herbert, a woman living in Marin. It was in a restaurant that Anne wrote the sentence down on a piece of paper, after turning it around in her mind for days.
"Here's the idea, "Anne says. "Anything you think there should be more of, do it randomly. " She painted the classrooms of poor schools, left hot meals on kitchen tables in the poor part of town, and gave money secretly to a proud old lady.
The acts of random kindness spread. If you were one of those drivers who found someone paid for you, who knows what you might do for someone else later. Like all great events, kindness begins slowly, with every single act. Let it be yours!
    53. Why did Natalie Smith pay for the six cars behind her?
    A. She had seven tickets. B. She hoped to please others.
    C. She wanted to show kindness. D. She knew the car drivers well.
    54. What do you know about Alice?
    A. She called Anne Herbert one day.
    B. She was a reporter in a local radio station.
    C. She painted the classroom of poor schools.
    D. She learnt about the sentence from her daughter.
    55. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. People should practice random kindness to those in need.
    B. People who receive kindness are likely to offer it to others.
    C. People should practice random kindness to strangers they meet.
    D. People who receive kindness are likely to pay it back to the giver.
