Check out these places and have the vacation of a lifetime in Greece!
    Lovely Ithaca
Located on the Ionian Sea, Ithaca is a combination of the greenest landscapes in Greece, the most wonderful swimming waters and a lively local atmosphere. When going around the narrow island, you will be attracted by the hilltop village Stavros and the beautiful fishing village Frikes. For motorists, Kaminia beach, hidden in a peaceful cove, is the perfect destination for a day of relaxation.
    Breathtaking Meteora
Although when you go to Greece, you often go to the beaches and islands, one of the must-visit destinations in Greece is definitely the breathtakingly beautiful Meteora, located on the mainland next to the village of Kalabaka. It is a natural attraction and the second most important monastic area in Greece, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the years, when a book has spoken to me with particular power, I have put pen to paper and send word off to the author, communicating what their work meant to me.
It all started in my 18th year, when I was entertaining my own imagination of success as a writer. I was full of high expectations, believing that becoming an author was simply a matter of putting my thoughts onto paper, sending the works to a publisher and waiting for fame to come. Then came the great disappointment. I wrote to famous children’s author Lloyd Alexander, describing my fruitless yearlong effort at publication and asking him for direction. To my joy, he answered: “Advice is always very easy to give — but very hard to make it specific and meaningful, since we all have to work in our own ways. When you mention that you’ve been writing for a year without being published, I hasten to tell you that I wrote seven times that long without being published! So, perhaps one piece of advice is: Patience.”
I was encouraged by the idea that a well-regarded writer would take the time to offer a bit of advice to an overconfident teen. But Mr. Alexander was not a singular case. But when I did get one, the content was often filled with consideration and even, at times, affection.
I think of the American poet William Stafford, who replied to me from Lake Oswego, Oregon. We actually had an ongoing correspondence (通信) for a while. I wrote to him asking if he would be so kind as to autograph one of his books for me. His reply brought an immediate smile to my face: “I am eagerly ready to autograph and return a book — it makes me feel like an author.”
24、What made the author disappointed when he was 18?
    A. He didn’t meet a well-known children’s author.
    B. He lost fame as a young writer.
    C. He failed to get his works published.
    D. He was forced to give up writing.
25、What advice did Lloyd Alexander offer to the author?
    A. Making decisions without hesitation.
    B. Regarding every piece of writing as meaningful.
    C. Being independent of others.
    D. Keeping on trying and being patient.
26、How did the author find William Stafford?
    A. He longed to be a successful writer.
    B. He was friendly and approachable.
    C. He was always ready to lend his books.
    D. He hated to reply to a letter.
27、What is the main idea of the text?
    A. I wrote to the writers in my life. B. I grew up with writing.
    C. What does writing mean to me. D. I won the fame as a writer.
On Wednesday, a search team called Endurance22 announced that it had located the wreck(沉船) Endurance. The Endurance was found 1. 87 miles below the ocean’s surface, about four miles south of its last known location near Antarctica. The ship sank after it got trapped in the ice in the Weddell Sea in 1915.
The discovered ship is still in excellent shape. The name can be clearly read on the back of the ship. Its wheel looks ready to be turned. Even though the ship is made of wood and is over 100 years old, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small organisms (微生物) that normally break down wooden objects underwater don’t live in cold water around Antarctica.
The Endurance22 is led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The team ran the project from an ice-breaking ship which was able to handle the difficult conditions of the Weddell Sea. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths, which were especially useful, since they could travel under the ice and go where the ship could not. The robots were looking for anything sticking up above the seafloor. For the last two weeks, the Sabertooths robots have been scanning the seafloor in a 150-square mile area around the Endurance’s last known location. Last Saturday, the ship was found. After the ship was located, the Sabertooths used high-quality cameras and scanners to record the Endurance in detail.
The Endurance is expected to remain untouched. Antarctica’s waters are protected by an international agreement, which means the ship can’t be disturbed. The Endurance22 team plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using a careful scan they made. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.
28、What helped to keep the Endurance in good shape?
    A. Sea sand. B. Cold water. C. Fine weather. D. Special wood.
29、What can we infer from the passage?
    A. The Endurance sank in the 1920s.
    B. The Endurance was damaged seriously.
    C. The Sabertooths found the Endurance last Saturday.
    D. Scientists will not study the ship because they can’t touch it.
30、What plays the most important role in finding the Endurance?
    A. Technology. B. Patience. C. Weather. D. Luck.
31、What is the best title for the passage?
    A. Study the Endurance. B. Explore the Weddell Sea.
    C. Locate the Endurance. D. Scan the Seafloor.
As many as 300 million full-time jobs throughout the world could be automated in some way by the newest wave of artificial intelligence that has made platforms like ChatGPT, according to Goldman Sachs economists.
In a report Sunday, they predicted that 18% of work globally could be computerized, with the effects caused more deeply in advanced economies than emerging markets. That’s partly because white-collar workers are seen to be more at risk than manual laborers. Administrative workers and lawyers are expected to be most affected, the economists said, compared to the “little effect” seen on physically demanding or outdoor occupations, such as construction and repair work.
In the United States and Europe, about two-thirds of current jobs “are exposed to some degree of AI automation”, and up to a quarter of all work could be done by AI completely, the bank estimates.
Further use of such Al will likely contribute to job losses, the Goldman Sachs economists wrote. But they noted that technological innovation that initially displaces workers has historically also created employment growth in the long run.
While workplaces may shift, widespread adoption of Al could ultimately increase labor productivity—and boost global GDP by 7% annually over a 10-year period, according to Goldman Sachs economists.
“Although the impact of AI on the labor market is likely to be significant, most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather than replaced by AI,” the economists added. “Most workers are employed in occupations that are partially exposed to AI automation and, following AI adoption, will likely apply at least some of their freed-up capacity toward productive activities that increase output.”
Of US workers expected to be affected, for instance, 25% to 50% of their workload “can be replaced,” the researchers added. “The combination of significant labor cost savings, new job creation, and a productivity boost for non-displaced workers raises the possibility of a labor productivity boom like those that followed the emergence of earlier general-purpose technologies like the electric motor and personal computer.”
32、Who are less likely to be affected by AI automation according to Paragraph 2?
    A. Repairmen. B. White-collar workers.
    C. Administrative workers. D. Lawyers.
33、What can we learn about AI according to Goldman Sachs economists?
    A. AI may cause little impact on the labor market.
    B. AI has replaced most jobs and industries.
    C. AI may increase labor productivity.
    D. AI has caused huge job losses.
34、What does the underlined word “complement” in paragraph 6 mean?
    A. To add to something to improve. B. To destroy.
    C. To introduce new things. D. To displace.
35、What’s the best title for the text?
    A. The Concept of AI B. The Achievements of AI
    C. The Impacts of AI D. The Development of AI

“I have to be home earlier than all my friends,” my teenage son, Jordan, said. “I’m seventeen years old, and I still have a curfew(宵禁). Legally, I’m practically an adult.”
“You’re not an adult,” I said. “You’re still in high school.” “None of my friends had a curfew. You don’t trust me.” “It’s not about trust,” I said. “It’s about wanting what’s best for you. I want to protect you.” “Protect me from what? Having fun?”
I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted the best for him? I decided to go for a walk. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on him: a small black cat with a white-tipped tail. “Hi, Meatball,” I said, scooping him into my arms. “Are you ready to come back inside?”
Meatball usually seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, he sat by the door, meowing to go back outside. “Why won’t he just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan asked. “Because he’s used to living outside,” I said.
Jordan’s curfew had become an ongoing discussion that rarely ended well for either of us. I decided to ignore his comment. Thankfully, he didn’t say anything else.
One night in January, temperatures were usually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside. “It's too cold out there, Bud,” I said. “You’ll freeze.” He stared at me and meowed again. “Mom’s not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She’s just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen Meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. Jordan said, “I let him out last night.” It took me several minutes to find him curled in a tiny ball beneath my husband’s car. I picked him up, unsure if he was alive or dead. While I called the vet, Jordan warmed towels in the dryer and wrapped them around Meatball.
“I’m sorry, Buddy,” I heard him say over and over again. “Mom was right. Even though you didn’t want to, I should have made you stay inside where it was safe.”
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W: Speak for yourself. There’s lightning and thunder. I don’t want to get hit by that and end up in hospital.

W: You might be able to fish in the river.

M: This time is difficult for everyone, but things will get better soon. I just hope the students will have enough learning material and a fast Internet connection.
W: You’re right. I’ll think positively. I’ve made educational videos recently to share with the students. What have you been working on?
M: I’ve been writing a book and sharing useful websites with my students. I’ll make more videos once I get a better camera.

M: I’ve thought about moving, too, but an apartment will cost more, especially the electricity bills. Do you know air-conditioning today is cheaper than it was 10 years ago? On the other hand, electricity is more expensive.
W: I didn’t know that. How much difference is there?
M: 5 years ago it was possible to run air-conditioning 24 hours a day for just $20 a month.

On the cards, children often write, “Thanks, Mom”, “To the best mother in the world” and so on. Then where did the idea for the holiday come from? We should thank Miss Anna Marie Jarvis. It is she who brought up the idea of having such a day. She lived in West Virginia. Anna’s mother was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues(问题). Her mother died on May 9th, 1905. On the anniversary of her mother’s death, she invited some friends to an informal memorial meeting. In 1907, a church service was held on her mother’s death anniversary. Anna’s love for her mother moved other people. Besides, she wrote letters to important persons of the country suggesting a public holiday to honor all mothers. In 1914, the United States Congress agreed that the second Sunday in May should be appointed as Mother’s Day. Finally, the decision was announced by President Wilson.

根据第二段的“It all started in my 18th year, when I was entertaining my own imagination of success as a writer. I was full of high expectations, believing that becoming an author was simply a matter of putting my thoughts onto paper, sending the works to a publisher and waiting for fame to come. Then came the great disappointment. I wrote to famous children’s author Lloyd Alexander, describing my fruitless yearlong effort at publication and asking him for direction.(这一切都始于我18 岁的时候,当时我正沉浸在自己作为一名作家的成功想象中。我充满了很高的期望,认为成为一名作家只是把我的想法写在纸上,把作品寄给出版商,然后等待名声的到来。然后是巨大的失望。我写信给著名儿童作家劳埃德•亚历山大,描述了我一年来徒劳的出版努力,并向他寻求指导。)”可知,作者18 岁时的一部作品未能出版。故选C。
    25、答案:D
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段的“When you mention that you’ve been writing for a year without being published, I hasten to tell you that I wrote seven times that long without being published! So, perhaps one piece of advice is: Patience.(当你提到你已经写了一年没有发表,我赶紧告诉你,我写了七倍的时间没有发表!所以,或许有一条建议是:耐心)”可知,Lloyd Alexander 给作者的建议是继续尝试并且要有耐心。故选D。
    26、答案:B
解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段的“We actually had an ongoing correspondence (通信) for a while. I wrote to him asking if he would be so kind as to autograph one of his books for me. His reply brought an immediate smile to my face: “I am eagerly ready to autograph and return a book — it makes me feel like an author.”(事实上,我们有一段时间一直保持通信联系。我写信给他,问他是否愿意为我在他的一本书上签名。他的回答立刻让我脸上露出了笑容:“我迫不及待地准备好签名并归还一本书——这让我觉得自己像个作家。”)”可知,William Stafford 非常乐意给作者寄一本签有自己名字书。由此推知,作者认为William Stafford 是友好、和蔼可亲。故选B。
    27、答案:A
通读全文可知,文章主要讲述作者在成为作家的路上,给一些著名的作家写信,他们的建议和反馈让作者受益良多,结合第一段“Over the years, when a book has spoken to me with particular power, I have put pen to paper and send word off to the author, communicating what their workmeant to me.(多年来,当一本书对我产生了特殊的影响时,我就会动笔写信给作者,告诉他他们的作品对我意味着什么)”可知,A 项“Writing to the Writers in My Life(给我生命中的作家写信)”可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选A。

根据第六自然段“The robots were looking for anything sticking up above the seafloor. Last Saturday, the ship was found. (机器人正在寻找海底上方的任何东西。上周六,这艘船被发现了。)”可知,机器人在上周六发现沉船。故选C。
    30、答案:A
根据第五自然段“For the last two weeks, the Sabertooths robots have been scanning the seafloor in a 150-square mile area around the Endurance’s last known location. (在过去的两周里,Sabertoths 机器人一直在“耐力”号最后一个已知位置周围150 平方英里的海底进行扫描。)”和最后一段“The Endurance22 team plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using a careful scan they made. (Endurance22 团队计划通过仔细扫描,创建沉船现场的数字3D 模型。)”可知,在寻找“耐力”号的过程中,科技起着最重要的作用。故选A。
    32、答案:A

根据第五段中的“While workplaces may shift, widespread adoption of Al could ultimately increase labor productivity—and boost global GDP by 7% annually over a 10-year period, according to Goldman Sachs economists.(高盛经济学家表示,虽然工作场所可能会发生变化,但广泛采用Al 最终可能会提高劳动生产率,并在10 年内每年将全球GDP 提高7%。)”
    34、答案:A
根据第六段中的最后一段中的“Although the impact of AI on the labor market is likely to be significant, most jobs and industries are only partially exposed to automation and are thus more likely to be complemented rather than replaced by AI(尽管人工智能对劳动力市场的影响可能很大,但大多数工作和行业只是部分受到自动化的影响,因此更有可能被人工智能补充而不是取代)”由此可推测出,提到美国工人是为了说AI 的一些好处。故选A。
文章首段“As many as 300 million full-time jobs around the world could be automated in some way by the newest wave of artificial intelligence that has made platforms like ChatGPT, according to Goldman Sachs economists.(高盛经济学家表示,全球多达3 亿个全职工作岗位可以通过最新一波的人工智能以某种方式实现自动化,这一波人工智能已经造就了像ChatGPT 这样的平台。)”

故填on。
It is the time (for sb.) to do... 故填to enjoy。

    Dear fellow students,
I am Li Hua, a senior three student of our school. There exists a very common phenomenon among us that many students stay up late to study and fall asleep in class. Now, I am calling for everyone's attention to this matter.
What should be stressed is that health comes first in the long journey to success. As far as I am concerned, we should take the following steps to prepare for Gaokao. First, we should focus on what the teachers say in class. In addition, we'd better make the most of the free time to finish the homework. Last but not least, we should try to form a good habit of going to bed early.
I firmly believe that we will make great progress by balancing our study and rest. So let's take action now!
    Li Hua

As I drove to the vet’s office, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat for warmth. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologizing in soft tones. He was clearly near tears. After examining him, the vet determined that Meatball had a mild case of frostbite on his paws, ears and tail, but no permanent damage. “But this could have been bad,” the vet cautioned. “Severe frostbite usually requires amputation. In this extreme weather, this little guy needs to stay inside overnight, whether he wants to or not.”
On the drive home, Jordan surprisingly apologized to me. “I’m sorry for how I’ve acted about my curfew,” he said. “I know you’re doing it because you love me and want to keep me safe.” I felt a lump in my throat, saying, “I’m glad you understand.” He nodded as he rubbed Meatball’s head. “It looks like you and I are going to be spending more time in the house,” he told the cat. I smiled through tears, so grateful
that our frozen Meatball was going to be all right and for the important lesson he’d taught my son about loving others enough to protect them, whether they want us to or not.
