As COVID-19 continues to spread, one thing is clear: Many of us are turning to pets to help us go through this challenging time. As people remain stuck at home, the demand for adopting pets, especially dogs, has risen worldwide. While the health benefits of having a pet are well known, how pet owners and their pets are dealing with lockdowns(封锁)is an open question.
To find out, researchers in several countries conducted online surveys of pet owners. Their studies, published in three separate scientific journals, found that overall our animal friends have provided additional comfort.
But the research also revealed some concerning developments: Pandemic restrictions are making pet owners concerned about their pets' well-being; Not only that, but some pets are showing signs of stress, such as increased barking, fear of loud or sudden noises, and anxiety when at home alone.
One of the researchers, Jon Bowen, asked 1,297 dog and cat owners in his country questions about their feelings toward their pets and their animals' recent behavior. Most owners said their pets had provided "essential support" during the pandemic, yet 62 percent said they thought their pets' quality of life had decreased. About 41 percent also reported observing behavioral changes in their animals during the pandemic, particularly dogs that had experienced behavioral problems in the past. "Plenty of research shows that dogs have emotions and can absorb what their owners are feeling particularly if an owner is emotionally dependent on them", says Bowen.
"It was really interesting that reports from different countries are very similar," says Emily McCobb, a professor at Veterinary(兽医的)School at Tufts University, who wasn't involved in any of the studies. "And these findings are pretty convincing, since they are very close to what we hear in the U.S."
"People are getting more pets and people are finding their pets helpful in dealing with isolation(隔离)," McCobb says. Meanwhile, in her veterinary practice, "we are also seeing that for animals that had behavioral problems, those seem to be getting worse," she says.

Shetara Sims had gone through some tough years. In 2012, her eldest daughter was murdered during an argument in Kansas City, Missouri. Last year, the single mother lost her job in the economic depression. She had only $7 in her pocket as she headed into the grocery store one day last July with her 12-year-old daughter, Rakiya Edmondson.
And then Lady Luck finally cut them some slack. She and her daughter found a dollar bill in the parking lot. Maybe this was their day, they told each other. So they bought a lottery ticket—and won $100.
But before they could spend their unexpected fortune, Rakiya had an idea. The news in Kansas City that week had been filled with stories about a police officer, Tyler Moss, who had been shot in the head in the line of duty. He was in critical condition, Rakiya and her mother had never forgotten how kind the police had been after their own family member was killed. "The detectives were really there for us," Sims said. They came to see my kids. They were fathers, friends and therapists. They were everything." Rakiya wanted to give their lottery winnings to Officer Moss's family. Her mom readily agreed.
On July 10, Sims called the police and made an anonymous(匿名的)donation. Moved by her generous expression of thanks, the officers did what they could do best—they tracked Sims down. When she explained the family's motivation, the officers could hardly believe it. "With her current financial hardship, we encouraged her to keep the money," the department later explained. She refused, saying the officer's family needed it and that police needed to know they were supported.
By then, that feeling of support was mutual. The police set up a GoFundMe page for Sims, whom they named "The Woman with the Heart of Gold." Their goal was $10,000. By January 11, 2021, they bad raised $165,405. Even better: Officer Moss, who had a 1 percent chance of survival, is out of the hospital and recovering.
30. What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Giving them up.
B. Doing them a favour.
C. Ridding them of debt.
D. Inspiring them with an idea.
31. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Tyler Moss is a popular police officer in Kansas City.
B. Shetara and her daughter's generosity came out of a sense of gratitude.
C. Shetara's 12-year-old daughter regarded Tyler Moss as her father at one time.
D. Tyler Moss had helped the investigation of Shetara's elder daughter's murder.
32. How did the police help Sims finally?
A. They raised money for her. B. They bought lottery for her.
C. They provided medical care. D. They saved her eldest daughter.
33. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To tell readers a good turn deserves another.
B. To express gratitude to a kind woman.
C. To make readers believe in miracles.
D. To educate readers to be generous to others.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp
Everyone is forgetful, but as we age, we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing. 34 Read on for some techniques worth trying.
1. 35
People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease(老年痴呆症), according to a recent study. 36 Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.
2. Go for a walk.
Mildly raised glucose(葡萄糖)levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain. 37
3. Learn something new.
Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time. 38 Or you can just go dancing with your friends.
A. Focus on the future.
B. This can be especially harmful to the aged.
C. It should be something like learning gardening.
D. So take a few minutes each day to do some reading.
E. But don't worry if your schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.
F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.
G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain.

Finding yourself at the doorway of any temple or ancient building in China, you may encounter 54 attractive but seemingly odd piece of wall, only 55 (slight)larger than the entrance itself. You would be forgiven for thinking this is just the remainder of another building, with the rest lost to history, as was my initial assumption the first time I 56 (spot)one. However, the reality is far more fascinating.
Out of 57 (curious), I asked around, bothering friends for information, and was finally able to get not only the name, but also the purpose of these walls. Zhaobi, or spirit walls, have a long and storied history, with archeological evidence 58 (date)from 3,000 years ago. Zhaobi could be found outside the entrance of various buildings. They 59 (reserve)for only the highest members of society once. Seeing zhaobi outside a
building would let passersby know this was the residence of someone of extreme importance, while protecting the privacy of 60 (it)residents.
In more modern times, zhaobi, 61 (adopt)by companies that practice fengshui, still exist. 62 zhaobi can help bring them good luck is questionable. But what can be said for sure is that these structures, like any other in history, stand 63 the development of Chinese history.

The football season, was almost over. Sally had been playing football all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players in her bright orange uniform, chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. As much as she tried, though, Sally still had not scored one single goal.
Before each game, they had a practice session. The coach showed Sally and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Sally was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn't kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit football and join a different club.
It was the last game of the season. During halftime, the coach said: "Don't give up." But Sally was feeling frustrated (沮丧). She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. She sipped at her cola and pouted(噘嘴).
The break was over and the referec blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Sally bent, tied up her shoelace and heard her mother whisper in her ear. "Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the ball. Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it."
Sally stood up and took a deep breath. Even if she didn't get one goal all summer, she knew that she had tried her best. That was something to be proud of. So she smiled at her mother and headed to her position. The whistle blew, and the game continued.
The score was tied(平局)with one goal each. The green team was pretty good, but Sally's orange team was fast. The girls' ponytails bounced as they ran, with many feet kicking frantically(拼命地)at the ball when it came near them. It was a rather boring game and Sally's heart was no longer in it.

第二节
Sally started daydreaming about joining other school clubs. She could be a member of the hip hop club, which her best friend Tracy kept talking about. She imagined herself dancing on stage of a big auditorium with thousands of people cheering for her. She could also try a different sport, like jogging or cycling. Anyway, football would be her last choice. Just as her mind was wandering, she saw a familiar face in the crowd. It was her mother. "Stay focused. You can do it."
Recalling her mother's words, Sally was woken from her daydream. At that very moment, her teammate passed the ball to her. She took control of it and dribbled it between her feet, moving forward toward the net of the green team. She passed a few players and was soon positioned right in front of the net. Focused on the ball, she kicked it as hard as she could. The referee blew her whistle. "Goal!" Sally's team won. Her mom was right. All she had to do was to stay focused.
