Betty wanted to go camping on the weekend. But on Friday night the weather report said it would rain on Saturday and Sunday. Betty was angry. She had to change her plan.

African elephants travel in a herd(兽群). All of the elephants in the herd take care of each other. The leader of the herd is an old mother elephant. She is the matriarch(女头领). She knows how to guard(保卫) the family if there is danger. The other elephants follow her. Adult male(公的) elephants leave the herd to live on their own and start families.

Elephants are intelligent animals with long memories. They learn from other elephants and they also learn from life. They usually can live up to 70 years. A matriarch can remember where to find water even in a dry spell. The herd will follow her there. She can also remember the safe place to cross a fast-moving river.
