In the heart of Texas, “Bee Czar” Walter Schumacher is saving the world—one hive (蜂群) at a time. And he does it without wearing a protective bee suit. What is his technique? He “communicates” with the bees to avoid being bitten. Walter and his team at the American Honey Bee Protection Agency rescue hives from places that are unwanted—inside the walls of a house or 30 feet up in a neighborhood tree, and relocate the hives where the bees can grow and pollinate (授粉) in peace.
According to Walter, every third bite of food we eat was pollinated by bees; without them, life would cease existing. But saving bees costs money, so they have got to sell honey to make money.
Walter’s business once was booming with $200,000 in yearly sales. But after losing everything in the past three years, Walter wants to rebuild his honey business so that he can afford to rescue unwanted hives. With his oldest son Will and a small but dedicated team, Walter has a plan to transform their old family farm into their new headquarters, to save more bees and sell more honey.
Saving bees is a big affair. Will runs the business, trying to keep his dad organized; Walter teaches his younger sons Bodhi and Odin the skills of keeping bees, and Will’s wife Meredith is experiencing her first bee rescue. Walter also invites bee technician Jonathan who seeks inner calm by rescuing bees and scaffolding (脚手架) pro Sandy, who can reach angry bees in places ladders can’t and dreams of talking to bees herself. Walter brings audiences into the hive when he trains beekeepers to safely handle millions of bees Will plans to sign big contracts selling honey to businesses like restaurants and supermarkets, meanwhile undertaking dangerous hive rescues.

This year, the students of University of Rochester (UR) can monitor occupancy rates in River Campus Libraries (RCL) spaces through the Waitz App, seeing which areas of the library have free space without having to physically visit it themselves.
“Waitz shows how busy each floor of the library is, so students can know before leaving their dorm,” Madi VanDeVelde, Manager of Waitz’s parent company, said. “Now, students never have to waste time pacing to looking for an open seat again.”
“The beauty of Waitz has really been in helping anyone who has walked into one of our popular spaces, only to discover that they can’t find a space,” Maurini Strub, Director of Performance & User Engagement of RCL, said. “Using the app, they can identify their best bets for an alternative space, and know before they go to the library where to find a spot.”
The company uses the Internet of Things to determine how many people are in a given space. They install sensors into the walls of RCL spaces that scan for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals. The signals are then converted into live occupancy data which are displayed in the monitors within RCL and on the mobile app. According to the company’s CEO Nic Halverson, the sensors have at least a 90% accuracy rate and do not collect any personally identifiable information.
Halverson launched the project in 2017 with his roommates in UC San Diego (UCSD) after being frustrated by the lack of open spaces at the university’s library. “I was walking up and down the eight floors of UCSD’s Geisel Library trying to find a seat to study one night only to see zero space available,” Halverson said. “I wish I knew how busy every floor was before I came! Then, Waitz App was born.” Now, you can download Waitz App on iOS and Android devices and select UR as your location.
    28. What can Waitz App help the students of UR do?
    A. Find empty seats in RCL. B. Know the way to UR.
    C. Borrow books from RCL. D. Make friends in UR.
    29. What is the advantage of Waitz App according to the text?
    A. Avoiding accidents. B. Reducing costs.
    C. Improving grades. D. Saving time.
    30. Why did Halverson design Waitz App?
    A. He wanted to help the students of UCSD.
    B. He wanted to walk up the eight floors quickly.
    C. He had the dream to invent an Android device.
    D. Heonce had difficulty finding a seat in a library.
    31. What may be the best title for the text?
    A. Waitz, A Magic App B. RCL, A Famous Library
    C. UR, A Beautiful University D. Halverson, A Great Designer
    D
As the carbon countdown clock ticks on, cities must be more imaginative and cooperative, a lively round table hosted in Newham by a non-profit organization Friends of the Earth said.
“Net zero is around the corner,” said Mike Wake, Director of Friends of the Earth. “The UK has cut greenhouse gas emission (排放) by 40% to date mostly through the growth of large renewable generation on the grid (输电网), but further cuts will be needed as London tries to find new ways of using energy.
“While Newham has lower greenhouse gas emission per head than the UK, it has high levels of fuel poverty, poor air quality and leaky homes. Vastly improved energy efficiency, especially on older and leakier homes, along with more efficient forms of heating and an expansion of low carbon heat networks, will help,” said Wake.
“But the future requires a shift to a more communal solution,” the representatives said. District heating, which pipes hot water from a central source to connected homes or businesses, is often a cheaper and lower-carbon method of heating highly populated areas. “It’s the lowest cost and low carbon solution for the future,” Wake added.
“There are new technologies to use wasted heat,” Wake said. “We worked with businesses to decarbonise (使环保) energy supply. Rather than wasting, spare heat generated by manufacturing and other activities can be captured and used to heat nearby properties. Friends of the Earth has already helped save Newham thousands of tonnes of emissions through district heating plans, solar PV and more energy efficient measures in the homes.”
But the challenges are substantial. Newham has London’s second-highest rate of fuel poverty. “Anyway, I’m confident and hopeful about the collective challenge,” said Wake. “But for Newham to be at the forefront of a green economy, to solve fuel poverty and deal with structural equalities, we must spare no effort.”
    32. What does Wake think of cutting greenhouse gas emission in the UK?
    A. It doesn’t work at all. B. It ended a short time ago.
    C. It is very difficult to continue. D. It still needs to be improved.
    33. What does the underlined word “communal” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Expensive. B. Peaceful. C. Public. D. Complex.
    34. How did Friends of the Earth help protect the environment?
    A. By releasing wasted heat.
    B. By starting up many businesses.
    C. By making national heating plans.
    D. By solving the issues about energy.
    35. What is Wake’s attitude to the challenges of Newham?
    A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Critical.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Asking for or accepting help can bring up a wide range of complicated emotions, like there’s the fear of being seen as needy or weak. Although accepting help from others is difficult, giving and receiving is a necessary part of life.
36 . For many people, the difficulty in asking for or receiving help is tied to childhood. As psychologist Lisa Firestone points out, these feelings often develop from having our requests go unnoticed at an earlier age.
Sometimes these unnoticed requests are a result of neglect or because parents are too busy to notice. Maybe they were undertaking some jobs to make ends meet or didn’t have additional family support to spare. 37 . When your needs go unnoticed, it can create feelings of shame about asking for or receiving help, while also forming an extreme sense of independence.
How do you get better at accepting help? One way to get better at accepting help is to start with small requests, such as asking for directions. 38 . Practicing this in good environment can ease some of the emotions that can appear suddenly.
39 . If you feel very uncomfortable, wait a few moments to let these feelings calm down before accepting or denying the help.
Helping others feels good. Although asking for help is hard, one way to make it a little easier is to focus on how it feels when you help others. 40 .
    A. Start small and make it a habit
    B. It can feel like a burden to ask for help
    C. Whatever the cause is, it may affect you
    D. Having needs ignored can make asking for help difficult
    E. We grow up in situations where help comes with duties attached
    F. And remember that the same thing applies when others are helping you
    G. Another way to get better at accepting help is to listen to your internal reactions

With only a week before New Year knocked on their door, Faith sat at her old sewing machine—a special gift from her late mother apart from her sewing skills—secretly sewing new clothes for her father and three younger siblings (兄弟姐妹) and preparing them for Easter.
Faith was the eldest daughter in the family and responsible enough to shoulder her disabled father’s responsibilities. Faith’s father, George, lost his arm in an accident. Despite his disability, George did his best to raise his children, but money was tight, and there were a lot of mouths to feed.
When George couldn’t afford new beds for his children as they grew taller and older, he made new furniture with one hand. It took him several restless nights to arrange the supplies and complete the work. Out of gratitude, Faith decided to do something for him a week before Easter.
“Let’s have a festive dinner, Dad!” she told George. “We haven’t celebrated anything since Mom’s death. Let’s make a change this New Year! Please!”
“Honey,” George said helplessly, “I barely have any money left, and I’d hate to see my children go to bed starving.”
But then George looked at the sadness in his children s eyes and realized he shouldn’t have said that.
“But,” he added, “I guess I can try, can’t I? I can get some eggs and flour, and let’s get your mother’s cookbook from the attic (阁楼). She had these inexpensive and delicious recipes in there. How about that?”
“Oh, perfect!” Faith cheered. “You’re the best, Dad! We’ll finally have a proper dinner!” she shouted to her younger siblings, and the joy on his kids’cheeks made George realize that nothing was more important to him than the happiness of his children.
The next day, George could take his kids to shop. The single father rolled his shopping cart through the aisles (过道), picking up a large bag of flour, a dozen eggs, and cheap sliced ham. After they finished shopping, George and his children decided to walk home because the grocery store was only a few blocks away.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, the bag slipped, and George knelt to pick it up when a young lady, Emma, stepped out of her car.

When getting home, George invited Emma to his home for the festival dinner.

W: Oh, hello, I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings, Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.

W: Mm. But, you know. $390 seems expensive for just one bedroom.
    M: Yes, you’re right. Oh. here’s one that’s a little cheaper, near University Avenue. It’s $350.
    W: How many bedrooms?
M: Just one again. That’s not a very nice area.

W: How about going to an Indian restaurant? The guide recommends one downtown a few blocks from the museum.
M: Now that sounds great. After that, what do you think about visiting the zoo? Well, it says here that there are some unique animals not found anywhere else.
W: Well, to tell the truth. I’m not really interested in going there. Yeah. Why don’t we go shopping instead? There are supposed to be some really nice places to pick up some bargain clothes.

Hello, my name is John Williams. I am an English teacher and I have started a website to help you improve English listening and speaking skills as quickly as possible. My online English lessons take just five to ten minutes each day to complete and there are no advertisements to take your attention away. You can also download the sound files to your computer and access them and take your lessons again any time. Every day, you’ll learn some new English vocabulary, idioms and phrasal verbs. And you’ll feel more confident in working and making friends in English. You’ll also learn correct English pronunciation. My idea of learning English is that it is best for you to learn a little each day and remember it clearly. This idea doesn’t mean a new method, but instead it is a concept I hope you can accept. Whether you are taking other English classes or not and no matter what methods you use, I can help you to achieve your English learning goals.

    参考范文:
The Future Belongs To Chinese Youth
The future belongs to Chinese youth, and I believe that the younger generation has the potential to create a bright and promising future for China, as the new generations are the architects of the coming times.
Take my classmate Li Ping as an example. Despite the challenges of learning advanced robotics, she perseveres investing countless hours in mastering the field. Finally, her work has already won her national recognition, indicating that young minds like hers will shape China’s technological future.
As a student, not only am I proud of our generation’s creativity and passion, but also feel a sense of responsibility. It is high time that we should equip ourselves with knowledge and skills to create a prosperous future, for the future is truly ours.
    第二节:
    参考范文:
Suddenly, the bag slipped, and George knelt to pick it up when a young lady. Emma, stepped out of her car. Emma rushed up, saying worriedly. “Are you okay?” “Fine, thanks,” George replied with a waving hand. When Emma hurried to help him pick up the scattered things on the ground, she was shocked to find the man had only one arm. Just then, Faith and her siblings caught up with them. When making sure George was not injured again, Emma offered to drive the whole family home.
When getting home, George invited Emma to his home for the festival diner. After entering the house, Emma looked around and was attracted by the clothes with good designs near the old outdated sewing machine. Faith told her the truth, explaining. “The machine is my mother’s and it is precious to me. My mother has passed away.” Soon the dinner which George had made according to his wife’s handwritten cookbook was ready. Emma enjoyed every moment she spent there and couldn’t wait to repay their kindness. “I’d like to send a new sewing machine as a gift,” she said to them when saying goodbye.
