The British are known for their sense of humour. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in shower of rain, he might say, “It’s a little damp outside.” Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, “She isn’t exactly friendly.” Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.
Another key to understand British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What’s more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr. Bean is a good example of this kind of humour. Mr. Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr. Bean doesn’t talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr. Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr. Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.
    4. Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?
    A. The British often use overstatement.
    B. The British try to understate something.
    C. British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
    D. British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
    5. The author explains understatement by ________.
    A. using examples B. making comparisons
    C. following time order D. describing a process
    6. Mr. Bean makes people laugh by ________.
    A. telling funny stories B. making jokes about others’ accents
    C. copying how others behave D. using his body movements and facial expressions
    7. This passage may be taken from ________.
    A a fiction novel B. a travel brochure
    C. a magazine D. a chemical textbook
B 5. A 6. D 7. C

An 82-year-old Chinese female pilot has set a record in the country’s airline industry after flying a small plane for40 minutes in Beijing. Miao Xiaohong, one of China’s second batch (一批) of female pilots, controlled the Tecnam P2010 plane to take off, turn, climb, dive and land safely at the Shifosi Airport in Pinggu District of Bejjing.
In 1956, Miao Xiaohong, who graduated from a high school in Jinan, won a position in the second batch. She graduated from the flight school in 1958. In the following years, she flew many important missions. In 1963, she accepted a mission to airdrop materials for the flood-stricken areas in Hebei Province. Poor visibility (能见度) prevented her locating the target areas as the clouds were about 100 meters above the ground, but she managed to finish the task.
In 1989, she retired and started her writing career. When she collected materials for her books, she found that many aged pilots in other countries still flew, so she had the idea to return to the sky. To prepare for the flight, she walked 3,000 steps every day and moved her arms to meet the requirements for high-altitude flight during the past two months. Different from past flights for missions, this time her goal was to enjoy the flight. She said that it was exciting and fresh. “Seeing the boundless blue sky unfold in front of me, I feel it is very open,” she said.
The trainer said that Miao Xiaohong could finish 30 hours of flight to get a license for commercial flight. She said, “My physical condition is good enough to finish the 30-hour flight but it is not so important for me to get such a license. After achieving my dream of returning to the sky, I hope to encourage young women to join the airline industry. I’m 82 years old and I can fly again. You, the young people, can fly and will fly better than me.”
    8. What can we learn from the airdrop mission carried out by Miao Xiaohong?
    A. She was a very lucky pilot. B. She had excellent flying skills.
    C. She suffered from poor eyesight. D. She seldom finished hard tasks.
    9. What made Miao Xiaohong have the idea of flying a plane at the age of 82?
    A. Her deep love for sky. B. Her wish to set a flying record.
    C. The influence of other aged pilots. D. The requirements of her books.
    10. Which of the following word can best describe Miao Xiaohong?
    A. Strict. B. Stubborn. C. Generous. D. Determined.
    11. What might be the best title for the passage?
    A. Returning to the Blue Sky B. Improving Your Flight Skills
    C. Managing to Finish Difficult Tasks D. Improving Yourself to Set a Record
B 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据第二段中“In 1963, she accepted a mission to airdrop materials for the flood-stricken areas in Hebei Province. Poor visibility (能见度) prevented her locating the target areas as the clouds were about 100 meters above the ground, but she managed to finish the task.(1963年,她接受了为河北省洪灾地区空投物资的任务。由于云层距离地面大约100米,能见度很差,她无法确定目标区域的位置,但她还是设法完成了任务)”可知,虽然任务艰难,但是她还是很好地完成了任务,由此可推知,她有很好的飞行技术,故选B。
    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“When she collected materials for her books, she found that many aged pilots in other countries still flew, so she had the idea to return to the sky. (当她为她的书收集材料时,她发现许多其他国家的老飞行员仍然在飞行,所以她有了返回天空的想法)”可知,受国外其他老飞行员的影响让她有了重返天空的念头,故选C。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“To prepare for the flight, she walked 3,000 steps every day and moved her arms to meet the requirements for high-altitude flight during the past two months.(为了准备这次飞行,在过去的两个月里,她每天走3000步,并且锻炼手臂以满足高空飞行的要求)”可知,为了重返天空的目标,她坚持每天锻炼,由此可推知,她很有决心,故选D。
通读全文,尤其是倒数第二段中“To prepare for the flight, she walked 3,000 steps every day and moved her arms to meet the requirements for high-altitude flight during the past two months.(为了准备这次飞行,在过去的两个月里,她每天走3000步,并且锻炼手臂以满足高空飞行的要求)”和最后一段中“After achieving my dream of returning to the sky, I hope to encourage young women to join the airline industry. I’m 82 years old and I can fly again. (在实现了我重返天空的梦想之后,我希望鼓励年轻女性加入航空业。我已经82岁了,我又能飞了)”可知,文章主要讲述了82岁高龄的中国女飞行员马晓红为了重返蓝天,坚持训练并最终实现自己梦想的故事。A项“Returning to the Blue Sky(重返蓝天)”适合做本文标题,故选A。
    D
A leaked IPCC draft reports, “Widespread use across millions of square kilometers globally of tree-planting and bioenergy crops could have potentially serious consequences for food security and land degradation (退化).” In other words, more massive monocultures (单种栽培) and more bioenergy crops, fueled by more fertilizers, could damage the structure of the environmental soil and its capacity to absorb carbon.
Everyone knows that to help ease the increasing climate crisis, we need to plant new trees. It’s said that the earth could support an additional 9,000,000 square kilometers of forest, potentially hosting 500 billion trees capable of capturing more than 200 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide at maturity. It would be a serious help to the environment.
Bioenergy now holds a 50 percent share of the world’s renewables consumption—as much as hydro, wind, solar and all others combined. It’s good news, but not entirely. If we consider that increasing desertification and rising ocean levels will take away more arable (可耕种的) land, we arrive at a crucial “trilemma”(三难困境). Should we use our spare soil for agriculture, reforestation or bioenergy?
Such a question would make sense in a multilateral, harmonious world, not on a planet where the richest country cancels an environment-saving agreement, thus encouraging the most tropically-forested nation to set about cutting trees.
Last year, 36,000 square kilometers of forest was cut down. Wouldn’t it be better to start by stopping deforestation altogether? Animal farming takes up 77 percent of the world’s arable land and provides us with 18 percent of the calories. Shouldn’t we cut back on global meat consumption? Modern bioenergy is already available. Shouldn’t we get rid of first-generation biofuels, which are produced from food crops?
    12. What’s the IPCC’s attitude to the widespread planting?
    A. Ambiguous B. Positive C. Disapproving D. Uncaring
    13. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?
    A. Add some background information. B. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
    C. Provide some advice for the readers. D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
    14. How can we understand “but not entirely” in paragraph 3?
    A. There is less sustainable energy for use.
    B. No more land is available for bioenergy.
    C. More trees are cut in the richest country.
    D. Bioenergy can cause more climate problems.
    15. What does the text mainly talk about?
    A. Developing farmland as much as possible.
    B. Planting trees to prevent global warming.
    C. Using bioenergy to reduce environmental pollution.
    D. Protecting present resources instead of developing new ones.
C 13. A 14. B 15. D
根据文章第一段第一句“A leaked IPCC draft reports, “Widespread use across millions of square kilometers globally of tree-planting and bioenergy crops could have potentially serious consequences for food security and land degradation (退化).”(一份泄露的政府间气候变化专门委员会草案报告称,“全球数百万平方公里的树木种植和生物能源作物的广泛使用可能会对粮食安全和土地退化造成潜在的严重后果”)”可知,IPCC对广泛种植的态度是不同意的。
根据文章第二段第一句“Everyone knows that to help ease the increasing climate crisis, we need to plant new trees.(每个人都知道,为了帮助缓解日益严重的气候危机,我们需要种植新的树木)”和最后一句“It would be a serious help to the environment.(这将对环境大有裨益)”可知,第二段是在介绍植树造林的好处,再结合第三段最后一句“Should we use our spare soil for agriculture, reforestation or bioenergy?(我们应该把多余的土壤用于农业、植树造林还是开发生物能源)”可知,本段是为了补充一些新的背景信息,方便下文展开讨论。故选A项。
根据文章第三段第三句“If we consider that increasing desertification and rising ocean levels will take away more arable (可耕种的) land, we arrive at a crucial “trilemma”(三难困境). Should we use our spare soil for agriculture, reforestation or bioenergy?(如果我们考虑到不断加剧的沙漠化和不断上升的海平面将带走更多的可耕地,我们就陷入了一个至关重要的“三难困境”。我们应该把多余的土壤用于农业、植树造林还是开发生物能源)”可推知,这并不完全是个好消息,是因为没有更多的土地可以用于生物能源。故选B项。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段最后几句“Wouldn’t it be better to start by stopping deforestation altogether? Animal farming takes up 77 percent of the world’s arable land and provides us with 18 percent of the calories. Shouldn’t we cut back on global meat consumption? Modern bioenergy is already available. Shouldn’t we get rid of first-generation biofuels, which are produced from food crops?(从停止砍伐森林开始不是更好吗?畜牧业占世界可耕地的77%,为我们提供了18%的卡路里。我们不应该减少全球肉类消费吗?现代生物能源已经存在。难道我们不应该摆脱由粮食作物生产的第一代生物燃料吗)”可知,本文主要是告诉我们要保护现有资源,而不是开发新资源。故选D项。
    第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
