Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲) to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study.“Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers,” she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family—and that’s pretty powerful.
21.What did Jennifer do after high school?
A.She helped her dad with his work.
B.She ran the family farm on her own.
C.She supported herself through college.
D.She taught her sisters and brothers at home.
22.Why did Jennifer choose the program at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield?
A.To take care of her kids easily.
B.To learn from the best nurses.
C.To save money for her parents.
D.To find a well-paid job there.
23.What did Jennifer sacrifice to achieve her goal?
A.Her health.
B.Her time with family.
C.Her reputation.
D.Her chance of promotion.

A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport.
According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits.
The Airline Passenger Experience Association(APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people, aged 18 and older, who have travelled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia or Brazil.
The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—when not drinking—choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet.
Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making chat with random strangers—spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively, Brazilians conduct their conversations online via e-mail, messaging apps or the social media.
Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers claiming to read them.
The international flyers did, however, express their desire for better in-flight entertainment.“The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and on-board service, and passengers are accepting those improvements,” said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director.“At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects of the journey,” he added.
24.What can you probably see in the flight according to the passage?
A.Brazilians choose to drink.
B.Germans chat to kill their time.
C.Americans do in-flight shopping.
D.The Chinese switch off the seat belt sign.
25.When on board the plane, .
A.most passengers like to read in-flight magazines
B.passengers from one nation have little in common
C.more than half of the passengers don’t enjoy plane food
D.most people tend to use in-flight time to have a good sleep
26.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Flyers care little about entertainment.
B.Flyers are expecting better flight experiences.
C.Flyers are not satisfied with the improvements.
D.Flyers have more and more demands for airlines.
27.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To entertain readers with interesting stories.
B.To encourage people to behave well in public.
C.To criticise impolite behaviour on the plane.
D.To inform readers of the results of a survey.

Who is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Let’s state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?
In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It’s said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.
A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别) are “really, really smart. ” Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart”. Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn’t take a genius to know the answer: absolutely not.
Here’s the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we’re all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素) like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world”.
28.What does the author think of victors’ standards for joining the genius club?
A.They’re unfair.
B.They’re conservative.
C.They’re objective.
D.They’re strict.
29. What can we infer about girls from the study in Science?
A.They think themselves smart.
B.They look up to great thinkers.
C.They see gender differences earlier than boys.
D.They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs.
30.Why are more geniuses known to the public?
A.Improved global communication.
B.Less discrimination against women.
C.Acceptance of victors’ concepts.
D.Changes in people’s social positions.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Geniuses Think Alike
B.Genius Takes Many Forms
C.Genius and Intelligence
D.Genius and Luck

Minutes after the last movie ended yesterday at the Plaza Theatre, employees were busy sweeping up popcorns and gathering coke cups. It was a scene that had been repeated many times in the theatre’s 75-year history. This time, however, the cleanup was a little different. As one group of workers carried out the rubbish, another group began removing seats and other theatre equipment in preparation for the building’s end.
The film classic The Last Picture Show was the last movie shown in the old theatre. Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say goodbye to the old building. Theatre owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theatre is preparing to close down.
Bradford said that large modern theatres in the city made it impossible for the Plaza to compete. He added that the theatre’s location(位置) was also a reason.“This used to be the centre of town,” he said.“Now the area is mostly office buildings and warehouses.”
Last week some city officials suggested the city might be interested in turning the old theatre into a museum and public meeting place. However, these plans were abandoned because of financial problems. Bradford sold the building and land to a local development firm, which plans to build a shopping complex on the land where the theatre is located.
The theatre audience said goodbye as Bradford locked the doors for the last time. After 75 years the Plaza Theatre had shown its last movie. The theatre will be missed.
32.In what way was yesterday’s cleanup at the Plaza Theatre special?
A.It made room for new equipment.
B.It signaled the closedown of the theatre.
C.It was done with the help of the audience.
D.It marked the 75th anniversary of the theatre.
33.Why was The Last Picture Show put on?
A.It was an all-time classic.
B.It was about the history of the town.
C.The audience requested it.
D.The theatre owner found it suitable.
34.What will probably happen to the building?
A.It will be repaired.
B.It will be turned into a museum.
C.It will be knocked down.
D.It will be sold to the city government.
35.What can we infer about the audience?
A.They are disappointed with Bradford.
B.They are sad to part with the old theatre.
C.They are supportive of the city officials.
D.They are eager to have a shopping centre.

You probably learned many things by watching how-to videos, but have you ever thought of making your own ones? You do not need to show it to anyone or put it on the Internet. 36
Recording yourself, whether on video or audio, is an effective method of self-study. 37 When you record yourself, it helps you identify what you are good at in English and which areas need improvement. How-to videos give you the chance to do several things at once. You will talk about a subject you already enjoy while giving step-by-step instructions, which gives you a chance to use a few grammatical forms. 38
Now, let’s go through the steps for preparing to make your video. First, choose a subject that will work well for a short video. Ideally, your subject will be something that is visually appealing and can be divided into steps. Is there a dish that you are great at making? Can you build or fix something? Do you have an artistic ability? 39 Even something as simple as how to fold a fitted sheet can be a great subject.
40 Make a list of the steps you think are important in making or doing the things you have chosen. You might not know the English words for some of the things you are describing. Find and practice saying them.
The last step is to record your video. A great way to introduce it is to say your name and then say what you are going to show.
A.Any of these can be the subject of your video.
B.Then, it’s time to prepare by gathering information.
C.How do videos show people how to do or make something?
D.We can learn to do something with the help of an Internet search.
E.This is especially true if you cannot find someone to practice speaking with.
F.Instead, the goal is to use the video to observe your own English speaking skills.
G.You will also get the chance to learn and use words related to your chosen subject.

Since our twins began learning to walk, my wife and I have kept telling them that our sliding glass door is just a window. The 41 is obvious. If we admit it is a door, they’ll want to go outside 42 . It will drive us crazy. The kids apparently know the 43 . But our insisting it’s 44 a window has kept them from 45 millions of requests to open the door.
I hate lying to the kids. One day they’ll 46 and discover that everything they’ve always known about windows is a lie.
I wonder if 47 should always tell the truth no matter the 48 . I have a very strong fear that the lie we’re telling is doing 49 damage to our children. Windows and doors have 50 metaphorical(比喻) meanings. I’m telling them they can’t open what they absolutely know is a door. What if later in 51 they come to a metaphorical door, like an opportunity(机会) of some sort, and 52 opening the door and taking the opportunity, they just 53 it and wonder,“What if it isn’t a door?” That is,“What if it isn’t a real opportunity?”
Maybe it’s an unreasonable fear. But the 54 is that I shouldn’t lie to my kids. I should just accept repeatedly having to say,“No. We can’t go outside now.” Then when they come to other doors in life, be they real or metaphorical, they won’t 55 to open them and walk through.
41.A.relief B.target
C.reason D.case
42.A.gradually B.constantly
C.temporarily D.casually

47.A.parents B.twins
C.colleagues D.teachers
48.A.restrictions B.explanations
C.differences D.consequences
49.A.physical B.biological

A month ago, I received an admission letter from Berkeley University, America, which made my whole family excited. Very soon, it’s time for my leaving. On an unforgettable morning, my sister came to see me off. We arrived at the airport just in time for my flight.“Well, here we are,” my sister said with a sigh. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. We had both been fearing this moment for the past week. After one last hug and a final goodbye, I would be on my way to a new life abroad.
I didn’t put my bag in the overhead locker; instead, I just placed it on my legs. The departure meant I could not see my dear sister for quite a long time. I was lost in thought, recalling the happy moments my sister and I had spent together. Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. One sunny summer day I was playing outside when she came up to me and said,“Want to come to the attic(阁楼)?” We both knew that the answer to that question was always “Yes”. We were frightened of the attic but also fascinated by its smells and sounds. Whenever one of us needed something, the other one would come along.
Before I knew it, the plane took off. But while it was going up, the plane shook heavily and the bag on my legs fell on the floor. My aspirin, hairbrush and a book I planned to read were spread on the floor. I was about to bend down to gather them up when I saw an unfamiliar little book in the middle of my belongings. It was not until I picked it up that I realised that it was a diary.
Immediately I recognised my sister’s handwriting.
I returned home two years later.

M: I have to tell you that your dog got really sick last night, and I found him dead this morning.
W: Why didn’t you take him to hospital in time?
M: I’m very sorry. I was so tired that I didn’t wake up until this morning.
(Text 3)
W: Can I help you, sir?
M: Yeah. I seem to have lost my room key.
W: In that case, you need to go to the front desk to get their help.
(Text 4)
W: Have you heard about the Russian plane crash in Egypt?
M: Yes, it’s terrible. 224 people lost their lives.
W: What a pity! To be honest, I always feel a little nervous while travelling by plane now.
(Text 5)
M: Did you see Mary when you went to London with your daughter last month?
W: No, I didn’t. I dropped by her house and her husband told me that she had gone to Spain on business.
M: What a pity!
(Text 6)
M: Good morning, Ann.
W: Good morning, Mr Jones.
M: How about a cup of coffee?
W: I will make it now.
M: And can you tell me what meetings I have this week?
W: I will bring the diary. Okay, this afternoon you have a meeting with your accountant at 5 p.m. On Wednesday, you are going to London. Don’t forget your train leaves at 9:30 a.m.
M: Okay, what time is my meeting in London?
W: At 11:30 a.m. And on Thursday Ms. Vonn wants to talk to you.
(Text 7)
M: Hi, Linda. How was your weekend?
W: It was great. We went to camp in the park near my house and had a picnic there.
M: Sounds wonderful. Hey, have you seen the family who have just moved in next door?
W: Yes, I just met them all outside. The man is a teacher and his wife is an engineer. They are polite.
M: That’s interesting. Did you talk to the children?
W: I spoke to the two girls. They were very friendly. They told me they have a brother named Jack. He is still studying at school. I hope we can meet him soon.
M: I’m looking forward to meeting the whole family.
(Text 8)
M: I wonder if this is going to be an interesting class.
W: Yeah, me too. So, what’s your major?

W: Ah, that’s what happened to me in my first year, too.
M: Oh, so what year are you in school?
W: I’m in my last year, and I only have to take 10 more credits to graduate. But once I graduate, I have to start repaying money to the bank. So I’m not looking forward to that.
M: But didn’t your parents help you out with your college fees?
W: No, my dad thought I should earn my own education, so I work like crazy in the summer and part-time to cover most of my costs.
(Text 9)

M: One, two..., six, six pieces?
W: Yes. By the way, there is a laptop in the black suitcase. Please handle with care!
M: Laptop? Wait a minute, please... Sorry, madam. I’m afraid that digital products are not allowed to be deposited. I think you have to take them with you. In fact, it’s the best choice to protect your personal property.
W: That sounds reasonable. I’ll take your advice. Mm... what’s the price of it?
M: It’s 8 dollars per hour for your two big suitcases, and 5 dollars per hour for the four small ones.
W: I have some other baggage to check. Where should I go?
M: You can go to the office in the waiting room. It’s Room 213 on the 2nd floor.
W: Thank you. The boarding time is seven twenty. There is half an hour left. I’ll get my suitcases before that.
(Text 10)
W: For hundreds of years, people have enjoyed ice cream. No one is sure when people first started to eat this frozen food. But paintings show an icy dessert being enjoyed as far back as the twelfth century. Ice cream became popular among the rich in Europe during the 1500s. King Charles Ⅰ of England liked ice cream so much. He carried out a law which said that it could be served only at his table. He even said that he would cut off his cook’s head if the cook gave the ice cream recipe to anyone. To Charles, the food was of great value, so he didn’t want to share it with anyone. In the United States, ice cream was eaten on special occasions by the country’s richest people. However, ice cream didn’t reach the rest of the nation until 1845. At that time, an American woman made a hand-held ice cream maker. With that machine, ice cream is not just for kings and presidents. Now it’s for all of us!

故选A项。
根据第四段的 “Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief:Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are ‘really, really smart.’”
根据最后一段的 “In a wired world with constant global communication,we’re all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear.” 故选A项。
从第一段中的 “This time, however, the cleanup was a little different.” 和in preparation for the building’s end可知, 昨天广场剧院散场后的清扫工作之所以特殊, 是因为The Last Picture Show这部经典影片放映结束后老剧院就要关门了。
从第二段第三、四句 “Theatre owner Ed Bradford said he chose the movie because it seemed appropriate. The movie is set in a small town where the only movie theatre is preparing to close down.”
从第二段第二句 “Though the movie is 30 years old, most of the 250 seats were filled with teary-eyed audience wanting to say goodbye to the old building.”

reason “理由”; relief “安慰”; target “目标”; case “事例” 。
constantly “重复不断地”; gradually “逐渐地”; temporarily “暂时地”; casually “偶然地” 。
truth “真相”; result “结果”; danger “危险”; method “办法” 。故选D项。
44.A 从文章第一段 “... my wife and I have kept telling them that our sliding glass door is just a window.” merely “仅仅”; slightly “稍微”; hardly “几乎不”; partly “一定程度上” 。故选A项。
attempt “尝试”; review “复习”; approve “同意”; receive “收到” 。
wake up “醒来”; win out “胜出”; give up “放弃”; stand out “突出”。
故选A项。
consequence “结果”; restriction “约束”; explanation “解释”; difference “差异” 。
spiritual “精神的”; physical “身体的”; biological “生物的”; behavioral “行为的” 。
由下文 “Then when they come to other doors in life, be they real or metaphorical, they won’t to open them and walk through.” 故选A项。
instead of “而不是”; by comparison with “同……比较起来”; in addition to “除……之外(还)”; regardless of “不管, 不顾”。故选D项。
53.B 孩子们只是瞪着眼睛凝视(stare at), 并疑惑 “那如果不是一扇门会怎样?” stare at “瞪着眼睛凝视”; get hold of “抓住”; knock on “敲击”; make use of “利用” 。
hesitate “犹豫”; hurry “匆忙”; decide “决定”; intend “打算” 。故选C项。

写作
第一节
Dear David,
You’re welcome to our city to learn Chinese during the winter vacation. I’m happy to recommend a nice training school to you.
The 21st Century Chinese Training School is well known for providing training for foreign learners. It lies in downtown Zhengzhou, where many buses are available. It offers a series of training courses during the winter vacation either from January 10 to January 25 or from February 10 to February 25.You can learn Standard Chinese and something about Chinese culture and local customs as well. The school provides free board and lodging, but the training fee is 5,000 yuan for a period. Is it suitable for you?
I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Immediately I recognised my sister’s handwriting.“Dear sister, what a day it has been today! You’ve got an admission letter to go abroad for further study and we...” Only then did I realise my sister had been keeping a diary every day during the past month. Holding the book in my hands, I could not hold back my tears any more. The old golden days we spent together came flooding back.“I’ll miss you. I’ll join you after my graduation,” I said in my heart, determined to complete my university courses in America and return home.
I returned home two years later. Seeing her after so long a time, I hugged my sister tightly, who was in pleasant surprise.“Will you leave again?” she asked softly.“Never. We’ll explore the life ahead together if you like, just as we used to do with the attic,” I said. Then for days we talked about our possible plans, feeling confident that with joint efforts we would have a bright future to look forwards to.
