一、阅读理解
Tulum’s location on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, in the Riviera Maya, makes it an ideal spot for enjoying beautiful beaches and great weather.
Spring
The two weeks around Easter is a popular travel time throughout Mexico; many Mexican families go on vacation during this time, so you should make your accommodation reservations in advance if traveling during this period.
Events to check out:
Holy Week is a time of religious observances, but for many Mexicans, it’s an opportunity to head to the beach.
Summer
Summers can be hot and cloudy. There are far fewer tourists during this time, which is great for photo opportunities as well as for enjoying the destination without the crowds. Summertime is the best time to observe whale sharks and sea turtles.
Events to check out:
The Celebration of the Talking Cross is held in the month of July and has its origins in the 1800s, at the end of the War of the Castes.
Fall
You’re likely to experience some rain if you visit during this season. The rainy season is not completely uncomfortable, however. It usually only rains for a short time, and then the sun comes out again.
Events to check out:
Sea Turtle Festival: Every October, several communities along the Riviera Maya host a festival for sea turtles in order to raise consciousness about the problems facing baby sea turtles.
Winter
Winter offers the best weather in Tulum. If you’re looking for sunny days and near-perfect beach conditions, this is the time to visit. However, there are more crowds. December and January are busy travel months, and Tulum’s party scene and nightlife are at a peak.

On a recent afternoon in a studio in Brooklyn, Mervin Primeaux-O’ Bryant and Brandon Kazen-Maddox were filming a music video. They were recording a cover version of Midnight Train to Georgia, but the voices that filled the room were those of Gladys Knight and the Pips, who made the song a hit in the 1970s. And yet the two men in the studio were also singing—with their hands.
Primeaux-O’ Bryant is a deaf actor and dancer, while Kazen-Maddox is a hearing dancer and choreographer (编舞者) who is, due to seven deaf family members, a native speaker of American Sign Language(A.S. L.). Their version of Midnight Train to Georgia is part of a 10-song series of American Sign Language covers of influential works by Black female artists that Kazen-Maddox is producing for Broadstream, an art’s streaming platform.
Around the world, music connects people closely together as it tells basic stories, teaches emotional intelligence and strengthens a sense of belonging. Many Americans know about signed singing from moments like the Super Bowl, when a sign language interpreter can be seen—if barely—performing the national anthem (国歌) alongside a pop star.
But as sign language music videos increase on YouTube, where they caused comments from deaf and hearing viewers, the richness of American Sign Language has gotten a broader stage.
“Music is many different things to different people,” Alexandria Wailes, a deaf actress and dancer told me in a video interview, using an interpreter. Wailes performed the national anthem at the 2018 Super Bowl, and last year drew thousands of views on YouTube with her sign language contribution to Sing Gently, a choral work by Eric Whitacre.
“I realize,” she added, “that when you do hear, not hearing may seem to separate us. But what is your relationship to music, to dance, to beauty? What do you see that I may learn from? These are conversations people need to get accustomed to having.”
4.What can we infer about Primeaux-O’ Bryant?
A.He sings songs in sign language.
B.He worked with Gladys Knight.
C.He filmed a music video for the Pips.
D.He designs dance steps very well.
5.Why did Kazen-Maddox learn A.S. L. at first?
A.To guide deaf actors in dancing.
B.To communicate with deaf family members.
C.To produce music videos for hearing viewers.
D.To become a sign language interpreter.
6.What makes the signed singing familiar to more people?
A.Some pop stars’ efforts. B.Moments like the Super Bowl.
C.The richness of A.S. L. D.The platform of YouTube.
7.What did Alexandria Wailes mainly stress in her words?
A.Signed singing makes music become visible.
B.Not hearing separates deaf people from music.
C.What music means to different people matters most.
D.A.S. L. builds a bridge between deaf viewers and hearing ones.
Today, there are a large number of ways to exercise and stay healthy. From working out in a gym to riding a bike to work, staying active may have never been easier. Despite all this, a new study finds Americans are actually much less active than their ancestors over 200 years ago. In fact, researchers from Harvard University say the average American people stay physically active for 30 fewer minutes than people did in 1820.
The team came to this conclusion after examining historical data which shows that body temperature among Americans has been falling for years. The results of a Stanford University report showed that the average body temperature of Americans has dropped from the age-old 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit(华氏温度)to about 97. 5 degrees.
They also looked at changes in metabolic rates(代谢率), which measure how physically active people are. Researchers found that the resting metabolic rate—the total number of calories the body burns while completely at rest—has declined by six percent since 1820. Researchers say metabolism plays a key role in producing body heat and much of this depends on how active a person is.
So what’s the cause of all this? “Instead of walking to work, we take cars or trains; instead of manual labor in factories, we use machines,” says lead author Andrew K. Yegian. “We’ve made technology do our physical activity for us. Our hope is that this helps people think more about the long-term changes of activity that have come with our changes in lifestyle and technology.”
The team also pulled data from two other studies to come up with an estimate of how much exercise Americans got in 1820 in comparison to today. “This will bring great benefits to my field of work because it can help us assess just how much increases in the incidence(发生率)of heart disease and Alzheimer’s is related to decreases in physical activity,” says Daniel E. Lieberman.
8.What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A.Americans’ way of working changes.
B.There are different ways to exercise.
C.Humans’ physical condition is getting worse.
D.Americans exercise less than people did before.
9.Why does the author use two numbers in paragraph 2?
A.To provide an example. B.To make a comparison.
C.To introduce a topic. D.To describe a phenomenon.
10.What mainly results in Americans exercising less?
A.The use of technology. B.The health condition.
C.A change in metabolism. D.A lack of time.
11.What can we infer about Lieberman from the text?
A.He values physical exercise.
B.His job is related to medical field.
C.He is a patient with heart disease.
D.He will estimate American future technology.
Approximately one-third of all textiles (纺织品) are produced from mineral resources and are ill-suited for recycling. “In the fashion industry, a great deal of clothing is produced much too cheaply, and is of such a poor quality that people desert it after wearing it just a few times. The majority of the deserted textile is unsuited for sale as second-hand textile,” says Pauline Harmsen, a senior researcher of Wageningen University & Research.
Much of our clothing contains materials made from fossil (化石的) resources such as oil. This applies to some two-thirds of all the clothing produced in the world. Nevertheless, things must change in the future. Not only is the supply of fossil resources becoming depleted, but much of the contemporary textiles also cannot be recycled.
In clothing recycling, we see textiles being produced from recycled bottles. Textile recycling is often difficult. This is because textiles are made up of different fibres that are difficult to separate. “If you really wish to recycle, you must start by considering the clothing production method. By designing clothing in such a way that the different materials can be easily separated, or by using just one type of fibre,” says Harmsen.
A programme for sustainable (可持续的) textiles was launched in Wageningen University & Research last year. Various researchers from different institutes are involved, from technical material experts such as Harmsen to consumer scientists. It will take a while before sustainable clothing made from natural resources finds the way into the fashion stores.
Harmsen’s dissatisfaction with clothing offered in stores has led her to make her own clothing from fossil-free resources. She focuses on sustainability but also on the material’s look and feel. She claims, “Eventually, we will need all available natural resources to fill the gap if we are no longer able to use fossil resources.”
12.What can we learn about the fashion industry from paragraph 1?
A.It creates huge waste.
B.It faces expensive material.
C.It lacks realistic demand.
D.It causes public resistance.
13.What does the underlined word “depleted” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Very inconvenient. B.Almost unusable.
C.Severely short. D.Rather cheap.
14.Which of the following is a way to recycle textiles more easily?
A.Employing advanced equipment.
B.Increasing production procedures.
C.Mixing pure natural materials.
D.Adopting single-fibre materials.
15.What can be a best title for the text?
A.Basic Methods of Textile Production
B.A Trend of Sustainable Consumption
C.Fossil-Free Textiles for Clothing
D.Breakthrough of the Clothing Industry
二、七选五
Dancing is natural and almost any child can dance. However, why do so many people find it hard to dance when they reach their teens or adulthood? 16
Most people have heard the words Dance like nobody is watching. “ 17 When we’re learning something new, we hate having an audience watching our silly mistakes. Actually everyone else is too busy worrying about their own mistakes. Chances are that you’re not the only one struggling with the steps!
We all have patterns of muscle memory. Your body likes doing repetitive movements that it doesn t have to think about. 18 Your brain may understand, but it can take a while to direct your limbs to interpret these new and unfamiliar movements. Be patient with yourself and understand it’s the way your body works.
19 If you’ve never danced before, the complex rhythms and fast footwork of flamenco would be a big challenge as the first dance style. If you’re inflexible, I wouldn’t recommend starting cold with ballet, either. Instead, do some yoga first to get your body used to the new demands ballet will place on it
A lack of rhythm is the biggest obstacle to learning to dance. However, it can be overcome with enough practice. 20 Then learn to dance when you begin to feel the beat.Dance can be a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby. Just be patient with yourself and learn to dance
A.It’s human nature to dislike looking foolish
B.You’ll be able to do them almost without thinking.
C.If you have no rhythm, try to master dance steps first.
D.Learning a musical instrument is a good way to learn rhythm.
E.Dance requires you to move your arms and legs in unusual ways.
F.The other possibility is that you picked a style of dance that doesn’t suit you.
G.There are many things that can hold people back when they try to learn dancing.

She finished her task quickly and began heading back home because she knew a huge snowstorm was coming.
However, the storm hit hours earlier than predicted, and before she knew it, she was driving straight through a snowstorm! The determined woman kept driving slowly. But eventually, as night fell, she was forced to stop the vehicle entirely.
“There was no visibility, and there was no way I was going any further, because it would have been far too dangerous,” she later said.
She called 911 for assistance, but the operator told her that because of the heavy snowstorm, many people needed help, and all the rescue workers had been sent out. What she could do was to wait on the spot. Hearing this, Shannon started to worry, “Would the gas tank last long? What if I fell asleep and the tailpipe was blocked?”
Looking around for clues about her location, Shannon made out a sign that said Bouvier Lane. She shared the location with her friends. As luck would have it, one of her friends recognized a farm near where Shannon was stuck, and said, “I know that family. I’ll contact them.”
While waiting for the rescue, Shannon saw two cars struggling on the road. She hurried forward and asked them to stop and wait.
Andre Bouvier Sr., an 80-year-old retired farmer, was enjoying a quiet evening with his 70-year-old wife when he got the call from Shannon’s friend. He didn’t hesitate before throwing on his bright yellow jacket and snow boots and headed out into the big storm, carrying an LED flashlight.

Shannon breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Andre heading her way! Andre walked slowly in the snow with difficulty and had to put his gloves in front of his eyes for the wind. Seeing him coming near, Shannon waved excitedly. Shannon told Andre that there were two more cars pulling over and waiting for help. “OK. Follow me!” Andre said to them quickly. Waving his flashlight, Andre led them back to his home after a long time. Arriving at the house, Shannon parked the car, got out, jumped into Andre’s arms and gave him a great big bear hug, and said, “I was grateful that you could come to us.”
Paragraph 2:
Once inside the house, the family welcomed their unexpected guests. They gave the strangers blankets and pillows, and made them as comfortable as they could. The next morning, Andre was up before dawn to make breakfast for them, and then went out to sweep the snow off the driveway. After breakfast, everyone thanked the Bouviers again and again, and drove toward home in the weakening storm. Andre was regarded as a hero by the strangers because of his efforts to save them from a dangerous night.
