Have you heard of the following events?

    Sheep shearing (修剪)

It’s a big sport in New Zealand, which proudly hosts the annual Golden Shears International Championships. Held in the town of Masterton in March, the four-day event seeks to identify the world’s fastest sheep shearer. The event is not all about shearing; live bands bring a party atmosphere to it. It’s attractive to many tourists.

    Lucha libre

It’s a form of freestyle wrestling with a devoted fan base in its native Mexico. Competitors are famous for their well-made masks, which keep their identities a secret. That’s until they are defeated in the fight, which often requires losers to show their faces. Don’t forget to bring some loose change: when viewers are impressed by a victorious wrestler, they throw money at them. You may enjoy the event once a year.

    Lawnmower (割草机) racing

This annual sport now has its own governing body—the British Lawn Mower Racing Association (BLRA). It has a 30-race championship that runs from May to October. Most races are part of larger rural events, such as the Cranleigh Show in Surrey, where viewers can experience other events. The BLRA remains un-commercial and donates all profits to organizations that help people who are poor, sick, or in difficulties.

    Wife carrying

Every year a small town of Sonkajaervi in Finland hosts the event: the International Wife Carrying Championships. During this competition, husbands have to carry their wives along the track which is 250 m long and features several barriers on land and a 1-m deep water pool. Two couples start at the same time and run as fast as they can. The winning couple is the one that completes the course in the shortest time.

    A. Wear a mask. B. Cheer for the loser.

    C. Look at the wrestler’s face. D. Take some coins with them.

From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming, the wind picking up and the sky darkening. The pool manager announced over the loudspeaker that the pool is closing immediately, asking everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.

All the swimmers had left by 3 :30 except Jessica's neighbor, eight-year-old Zack. Zack's mother had planned to pick him up after work, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided to drop Zack off on her way home, She taped a note for Ms Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.

The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. Jessica said, “Zack, I'm going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine." She pressed the garage-door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way into the house. Jessica held Zack's hand firmly. The door was heavy with the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica's hand and hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces. Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.

Remembering everything she could from her emergency training, Jessica took Zack to the completely dark basement. Jessica held Zack's trembling hand tightly. Feeling their way with great caution, they sat down in a corner finally. Outside, the lightning flashed, the thunder roared, and the furious wind howled, which threatened to put the world to an end. Feeling overwhelmingly scared, little Zack burst into tears, saying, “I miss my mom." Jessica held him in her arms, saying, “Honey, don't be afraid! Everything will be all right.”

’Instead of corona virus, the hunger will kill us.’ A global food crisis appears.

In the largest slum(贫民窟) in Kenya’s capital, people desperate to eat cause chaos during a recent giveaway of flour and cooking oil, leaving scores injured and two people dead.

In India, thousands of workers are lining up twice a day for bread and fried vegetables to keep hunger away.

The corona virus pandemic has brought hunger to millions of people around the world. An estimated 265 million people could be pushed to the edge of starvation by year’s end. “We’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Arif Husain, chief economist at the World Food Program, a U.N. agency. “It wasn’t a pretty picture to begin with, and this makes it probably worse.”

The world has experienced severe hunger crises before, but those were regional and caused by one factor or another — extreme weather, economic downturns, wars or political instability. This hunger crisis, experts say, is global and caused by a variety of factors linked to the corona virus pandemic and the following interruption of the economic order.

There is no shortage of food globally, or mass starvation from the pandemic — yet. But problems in planting, harvesting and transporting food will leave poor countries exposed in the coming months, especially those dependent on imports, said Johan Swinnen, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington.

To lessen the impact of this crisis, some governments are fixing prices on food items, delivering free food and carrying out plans to send money transfers to the poorest households. Yet, communities across the world are also taking matters into their own hands. Some are raising money through crowdfunding platforms, while others have begun programs to purchase meals for needy families.

    8. What can we know from the scenes of people getting food in Kenya and India?

    A. Food shortage is becoming increasingly severe.

    B. People in Kenya and India are rude and mean.

    C. Food shortage causes people to go on strike.

    D. People are afraid of being infected by corona virus.

9 What is Arif Husain’s attitude to the starvation caused recently?

    A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Pessimistic.

    10. Why is this hunger crisis different from the previous hunger crises?

    A. It is global and caused by various factors.

    B. It has caused mass starvation regionally.

    C. It is caused by natural disasters.

    D. It is caused by the economic disorder.

    11. Which of the following measures is taken by the governments for this hunger crisis?

    A. Raising money. B. Buying meals.

    C. Giving out free food. D. Setting prices on goods.

    D

An advance in electronic publishing could make the e-book you are reading seem as dated as a silent film. Publishers hope to explore the growing success of e-books by releasing versions with added soundtracks(电影配音)and musical accompaniments.

The noises in the first multimedia books — released in Britain on Friday - include rain hitting a window in a Sherlock Holmes tale. When the plot of a book reaches the most exciting part, background scores will create tension.

Supporters argue that sound effects are the next logical development for e-books and will add excitement for younger readers. Critics, however, will argue that the noise will ruin the simple pleasure of having the imagination stimulated by reading.

Caroline Michel, chief executive of the literary agency, said the new generation of computer- literate readers was used to multiple sensory input. She said, “Young people have split computer screens where they may be watching television and replying to an email at the same time. If that's what the market wants then we should respond to the market.”

Book track's sound effects work by estimating the user's reading speed. Each lime you turn a page, the software reassesses where you have reached in the text and times the sounds to switch on accordingly. If the soundtrack becomes out of synch (同步),a click on any word will reset it.

Some authors fear that a soundtrack could destroy the peace and quiet of libraries and ruin the pleasure, of reading. David Nicholls, author of Our Day, the bestseller now released as a film, said, “This sounds like the opposite of reading. I have enough trouble reading an e-book because I'm constantly distracted by emails.

Stuart MacBride, the crime writer whose novel Shatter the Bones was an e-book bestseller, sells 18% of his books as electronic downloads. He said, “If I'm reading, I will do the noise in my head. I don’t need someone to tell me what lea cups clinking sounds like. That would irritate (激怒)me.”

    12. What do publishers expect an e-book soundtrack to do?

    A. Help to release an e-book as a film. B. Help readers improve reading speed.

C Add tension at a book's exciting point. D. Get readers familiar with    the background.

    13. Who is in favour of added soundtracks for e-books?

A Mr. Darcy. B. Caroline Michel.

    C. David Nicholls. D. Stuart MacBride.

    14. What do we know about Stuart MacBride?

    A. He was a person who was easy to get angry.

    B. He knew a great deal about tea and tea culture.

    C. Eighty-two percent of his books described crime.

    D. He imagined sounds related to the story when reading.

    15. What's the main idea of the passage?

    A. Opinions about e-books with soundtracks.

    B. Response to the need of the book market.

    C. Reasons for traditional e-books becoming outdated.

    D. Suggestions on encouraging readers’ imagination.
