Staff at the Thai Dynasty restaurant in Singapore never thought they’d receive such a huge tip during the COVID-19 pandemic (流行病), when economic condition seemed hard, let alone one as big as $600. But believe it or not, they did.
What was more surprising, however, was the person who left that massive tip for them. It wasn’t from a customer who was feeling extra generous that day. No, it was Jesse, a food delivery rider who came by to pick up an online order.
Being a familiar face among the staff due to frequent orders from the restaurant, the delivery rider wanted to show his best appreciation for their hard work in ensuring orders are prepared on time every time he comes by to pick something up. Along with the tip, he also left a heartfelt written note.
“Hello! I am writing to you all because I am very happy with your food and friendly customer service,” the note starts. “I want to say that your food is really delicious. You know, every day when I’m working, I see you all working so hard, which makes me feel proud of you all. Working is not easy, and I understand that because I am also working. Therefore, I want to thank you all for the good food and I want to help you all. Here inside is $600, for all of you. Share it among yourselves. Thank you once again!”
Speaking to Shin Min Daily, Thai Dynasty director Jason Pay said he never expected such a thing from a delivery rider, despite Jesse being a familiar face. “Employees are allowed to keep the tips for their good service, but they chose to return it, which I’m touched by,” Pay said.
Yes, they managed to return the super generous tip when Jesse swung by a few hours later to pick up another order. But seeing the hard work that the delivery rider highlighted in his staff, Pay decided to reward them the next day with pizza and other dishes for lunch.
    4. What does the underlined word “It” in the second paragraph refer to?
    A. The tip. B. An note. C. A stranger. D. An order.
    5. What impressed Jesse most about the restaurant?
    A. The delicious food. B. The familiar faces.
    C. The generous customers. D. The positive working attitude.
    6. What did the staff do to show their appreciation?
    A. They told the story to the newspaper.
    B. They gave back the tip to the delivery rider.
    C. They helped the delivery rider get more orders.
    D. They treated the rider with delicious pizza and other dishes.
    7. Which saying can describe the text best?
    A. Experience must be bought.
    B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
    C. A hero is known in the time of misfortune.
    D. Everyone’s love will make the world a better place.

    【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段第二句中的“Employees are allowed to keep the tips for their good service, but they chose to return it, which I’m touched by(员工可以保留小费以奖励他们的优质服务,但他们选择退还,这让我很感动)”可知,员工们因其良好的服务而被允许保留小费,但他们选择退还小费。由此可知,员工们通过将小费还给了送餐员来表示他们的感激。故选B。

In valleys with thick plants, different-sized round and square buildings with faded yellow clay walls and wooden roofs, tulou lie in mountainous villages in Longyan, Fujian Province. There are more than 23,000 tulou in Yongding, which became well-known after 46 were given World Heritage status by UNESCO in 2008. “The structures were awarded because they are exceptional examples of a building of tradition and function demonstrating a particular type of communal living and defensive organization, and, in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment, an outstanding example of human settlement,” UNESCO said.
The giant multi-storied tulou were built with wood and mud walls. Constructed from the 15th to 20th centuries, these massive communal homes were sited based on feng shui principles, which claim to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their environment. Tulou are also purposefully resting amid tea, tobacco, rice plantations and abundant forests of pine and bamboo.
Throughout history, tulou residents have mostly been Hakka — migrants in southern China. Population pressures created conflict between the Hakka and their neighbors, so they built their homes to double as defending. The buildings are mainly four or five stories high. The first floor serves as the kitchen, the second is used for grain storage and the upper floors act as living areas. The structures are mainly symmetrical, and their defensive features include ironclad gates, escape tunnels, narrow openings for weapons under the dark-tiled roofs, and a water well. For their defensive function, only rooms on the third floor and higher have windows, which are very small. With sufficient food, the residents could survive in the event of a lengthy conflict.
Communal living is integrity to these villages, where the closed wall design boosts social interaction. Residents gather in the courtyard for ceremonies such as ancestor worship and weddings. Tulou is such an extraordinary piece of architecture, living up to the title given by UNESCO.
    8. What do we know about tulou?
    A. Over 23,000 tulou were given World Heritage status.
    B. Among 23,000 tulou, only 46 became famous globally.
    C. They’re exceptional buildings of tradition and function.
    D. Tulou is the most outstanding Chinese human settlement.
    9. What is most important for residents during a long period of conflict?
    A. Escape tunnels. B. Enough food. C. Small windows. D. Defensive weapons.
    10. What is probably the author’s attitude to the protection of tulou?
    A Favorable. B. Unclear. C. Negative. D. Unconcerned.
    11. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
    A. Tulou: in Harmony with Their Environments
    B. Tulou: Different-Sized Round and Square Buildings
    C. Tulou: Given the World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2008
    D. Tulou: a Special Chinese Structure Combining Living and Defending
    【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“With sufficient food, the residents could survive in the event of a lengthy conflict.(有了充足的食物,居民们可以在长期冲突中生存下来)”可知,在长期的冲突中,居民最重要的是足够的食物。故选B。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Tulou is such an extraordinary piece of architecture, living up to the title given by UNESCO.(土楼是如此非凡的建筑,无愧于联合国教科文组织授予的称号)”可推知,作者对土楼保护的态度可能是支持的。故选A。

In the last decade, Google has spent millions of dollars on measuring nearly every aspect of its employees’ lives — from what characters the best managers share to how often particular people eat together. Google was determined to find out how to form “the perfect team”.
The company’s managers worked hard on finding the perfect group of people necessary to form an excellent team. They believed that building good teams meant combining the best people. But it wasn’t that simple.
In 2012 Google ran a project known as Project Aristotle. It took several years and included interviews with hundreds of employees. The project led to the same conclusion that good managers have always known: In the best teams, members are able to understand other people’s feelings, and most importantly, listen to one another.
Matt, a manager at Google, was eager to put Project Aristotle’s findings into practice. He took his team outside the office to talk about his cancer diagnosis (诊断). Although his colleagues were silent in the beginning, they then began sharing their own personal stories.
At the heart of Matt’s plan and Google’s findings is the idea of “psychological safety”. Google now describes psychological safety as the most important factor (因素) in building a successful team.
Google concluded that in the best team, all members should contribute to the conversation equally, and respect one another’s emotions. It has less to do with who is in the team, and more with how the members communicate with one another.
    12. Why did Google spend so much money on learning about its employees?
    A. To make the best team. B. To improve their lives.
    C. To enlarge the company. D. To find the best managers.
    13. What is the most important quality of the best-team members?
    A. They are creative. B. They are eager to learn.
    C. They are good listeners. D. They are ready to help others.
    14. How did Matt get his colleagues sharing their own personal stories?
    A. By rewarding the first for doing the talking.
    B. By offering suggestions on fighting cancer.
    C. By making them feel psychologically safe.
    D. By promising to keep their stories secret.
    15. What is the story intended to do?
    A. To introduce the development of Google.
    B. To figure out the key to a successful team.
    C. To show how to work together with others.
    D. To prove the importance of communication.
    【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. B

Since Benjamin lost his sight during his service in the army, he had seldom gone out, but his friends always encouraged him and bought him a guide dog named Cooper. Benjamin had to admit the dog made all the difference. He regained some independence such as walking through the park.
Benjamin’s friend, Natalie, was singing in a performance at the local concert hall. Benjamin hadn’t expected to go and hear her sing, but Natalie wanted him to be there and told him some of their friends would be present too. So he put on his nice suit, grabbed Cooper, and set out.
Benjamin reached the hall a bit late. He decided to go to his friends later and sat with his dog in the closest row he could sense. He knew at least two people were sitting in the same row. “Oh! Who brings a dog to the nice concert hall?” Benjamin heard a woman complain. Maybe she didn’t notice his really black glasses and didn’t understand why he needed a dog. “Ada, he’s blind. It’s his service dog,” her husband replied.
Natalie took the stage. Although Benjamin couldn’t see her, he knew she looked beautiful. Meanwhile, the woman named Ada continued complaining about Cooper. Benjamin was about to be angry. She had known he was blind. Worst of all, she was interrupting his friend’s concert. Benjamin decided he would leave as soon as Natalie finished this song. However, as the song ended, Natalie began to address the audience.
“Thank you, everyone. The next song is for one special friend in particular, Benjamin,” Natalie said, looking in Benjamin’s direction and Benjamin could hear the emotions in her voice. “You sacrificed (牺牲) so much for our country, and I do hope the next song brings you happiness and shows you the wonderful world.” Benjamin felt tears falling from his eyes. Cooper rested its head on his knee, comforting him as Natalie sang out a beautiful song.

    【答案】One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
To Benjamin’s shock, the woman kept quiet the entire time. So he decided to stay. After all, he was afraid his early departure would let Natalie down. When the concert finished, Benjamin’s friends approached him. Natalie soon came out to greet the group, and her friends all congratulated her. Everyone was laughing and discussing the great show, and no one made special mention of Benjamin or his disability. It was the first time that he felt a sense of normality in years. He hoped there would be many more.
    Paragraph 2:
Ada, with her husband, approached when Benjamin and his friends chatted. She wanted to apologize to Benjamin. “I’m sorry. I’m not used to dogs being in places like this,” she said, looking embarrassed. “No worries. Just… don’t judge others before knowing what they’re experiencing,” Benjamin responded quickly before turning his attention back to his friends. Benjamin knew he would face tons of people like Ada in the future. However, he would get through it, thanks to his dog and his friends who supported him.
    【解析】
