Which’s more important: Your employee or your customer? A popular business expression is, “The customer is always right.” But you should never say “always”.

The owners of a restaurant in Alaska won international praise after protecting their autistic (自闭的) employee.

When the employee delivered the wrong food to a customer’s house, that customer reacted violently and unkindly. Even after the employee corrected the mistake, the customer continued to shout. And that same customer was even rude to the restaurant owners’ daughter. So the owners “fired” the customer.

Restaurant owners P.J. and Spiro Gialopsos have added the customer to the restaurant’s “Do Not Deliver” list. That customer is now persona non grata, Latin for “an unwelcome person”.

P.J. Gialopsos wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page, “You would think the majority of the population would have learned or at least heard about autism.”

Gialopsos said, “The employee has worked at the Little Italy Restaurant in Anchorage, Alaska, for two years. He was very upset about the angry customer.”

Gialopsos describes the employee as a seriously gifted university student who is curious about the world. She adds that the employee also has “an amazing personality, great sense of humor and a strong work ethic.”

“This employee is also one who will not have to deal with that rude customer anymore,” added Gialopsos.

Reached at home by reporters, Gialopsos says she is happy about the positive comments she and her husband are receiving. By Tuesday afternoon, her Facebook posting about the incident received more than 30,000 “Likes” and hundreds of positive comments. Comments and e-mails came from Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Namibia and the United Arab Emirates.

Gialopsos said she spent a couple of emotional days crying over the posts on the Facebook page. She adds that many parents from around the country who have children with autism wrote to her about the incident. “Their stories broke my heart,” she said. Another comment on Facebook that she found “striking” is a woman who thanked them for hiring someone who is “differently-abled”.

24Why did the owners of the restaurant receive praise?

AThey would always put their customers first.

BThey had a “Do Not Deliver” list in their restaurant.

CThey fired a customer for hurting their autistic worker.

DThey promised to deliver food to their customers’ house.

    25What made the customer angry?

    AThe employee acted unkindly.

BHe didn’t get the food he ordered.

CThe owners’ daughter was very impolite.

DHe was considered as an unwelcome person.

26Why did Gialopsos cry when she read the posts on Facebook?

ABecause she was moved by others’ comments.

BBecause children with autism were thankful to her.

CBecause nobody understood what she had done.

DBecause stories on the Facebook page hurt her feelings.

27Where is the text most probably taken from?

AA restaurant guide. BA news report. CA research paper. DA personal diary.

    C

To give a tip or not? If so, how much? They can be headaches even for the most experienced tourists. This week, the main political parties in the UK have finally come to rescue by passing laws to forbid bars and restaurants taking tips from the customers.

However, not every country in the world takes the matter as seriously as the British, who are believed to have invented the custom in the 17th century — originally as a noble practice of giving small gifts to the so-called “inferior (低等的) classes”. Later, tipping has become a habit widely accepted in the world, although it is influenced by a nation’s culture and values.

A common joke among Americans is that only getting tax return is more confusing than tipping. Tips were imported into the country in the 19th century, when wealthy Americans began travelling to Europe. The custom was originally disapproved in the US. Critics accused tippers of creating a class of people who “begged for favors”. Fast forward to the 21st century and you will still find Americans debating the pros and cons. But tipping is now completely ingrained (根深蒂固的) in the national soul.

Like many Asian countries, China is largely a no-tipping culture for decades it was actually prohibited and considered illegal. To this day, it remains relatively uncommon.

Japan’s complex manner system includes tipping. It is socially acceptable on special occasions such as weddings, but on the other occasions, it can actually make the receiver feel ashamed, if not abused. Even on occasions where tips are expected, the money is expected to be sealed in special envelopes as a sign of gratitude and respect. Otherwise, it will be refused because tips are usually included in the payment for the service.

28What’s the original purpose of tipping?

    ATo please the ordinary people.

    BTo praise people’s good deeds.

CTo indicate people’s thanks to the poor.

DTo show noble kindness to the lower class.

29What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?

AAmericans are used to giving tips.

BIt is quite normal to tip in America.

CTipping is very complex in the US.

DGetting tax return is simpler than tipping.

30What can be inferred about tipping in Asia?

ATips are totally forbidden in China.

BTipping will become popular very soon.

CGood services should be put before tips.

DTips can be accepted for special celebrations.

31In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    ALaw BCulture CEconomy DTourism

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).

The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.

Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).

But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.

The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).

Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.

32What is the second paragraph mainly about?

AThe seriousness of big-tree loss in California.

BThe increasing variety of California big trees.

CThe distribution of big trees in California forests.

DThe influence of farming on big trees in California.

33Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?

    AEcological studies of forests.

    BBanning woodcutting.

    CLimiting housing development.

    DFire control measures.

34What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre?

AInadequate snowmelt. BA longer dry season.

CA warmer climate. DDampness of the air.

35What can be a suitable title for the text?

ACalifornia’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?

BCutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon

CWhy Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?

DPatrick McIntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California

    67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Lucy was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Lucy was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team as well. But this particular competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Lucy was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though her stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾). Lucy’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.” “I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Lucy replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

Lucy’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a reassuring (令人宽慰的) pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”

Lucy felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had dissolved (消融). She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.

    注意:1.所续写的短文词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    Paragraph1:

She didn’t expect to find a handwritten note.

    Paragraph 2:

She saw her soccer uniform and realized she had grabbed the wrong bag.
