In Nvember, Jhnsy became very ill, and was lying n her bed and lking thrugh the windw at the wall f the next huse. “Her nly chance,” the dctr said, “is fr her t want t live.” After the dctr had gne, Sue came int Jhnsy’s rm. Jhnsy was lking ut f the windw and cunting. “Six,” said Jhnsy. “There ges anther ne. There are nly five left nw.” “Five what, dear?” “Leaves. On the ivy vine. I want t see the last ne fall. Then I’ll die.” “Jhnsy dear,” said Sue, “try t sleep. I must g and ask Behrman t be my mdel.”
Old Behrman was a painter. He was past 60 and earned a little mney by being a mdel. Sue fund Behrman and tld him what Jhnsy had said. Jhnsy was sleeping when they went upstairs. They lked ut f windw at the ivy vine. A cld rain was falling.The next mrning, there std ne ivy leaf. “It’s the last ne,” said Jhnsy. “It’ll fall tday, and I’ll die.” At night, the wind began t blw. The next mrning, the leaf was still there. “Smething has made that last leaf stay there. It’s wrng t want t die,” said Jhnsy t Sue. “Please bring me a little sup nw.” A few days later, the dctr said t Sue, “She’s ut f danger.” That afternn, Sue came t the bed where Jhnsy lay. “Mr Behrman died tday,” she said. “He was wet and icy cld frm being ut all night. D yu knw why the leaf never mved? Behrman painted it n the wall the night that the last leaf fell.”
