You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams(1860—1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson(1907—1964)
If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O’Connor(1930—present)
When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator(参议员) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks(1913—2005)
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil-rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” said Parks.

My brother and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this distraction, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed a beat-up (破旧的) black Mustang (福特野马汽车) pulled over to the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tyre.
My brother helped him change the flat. We started getting to know the young man who was from a dangerous neighborhood nearby. He said that this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into a minor car accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn't come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve.”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help (which I totally missed!) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.
24. Why did the author's brother take a wrong turn?
A. He was lost in thought.
B. He was confused by the road signs.

C. They showed him the right way back home.
D. They comforted him and gave him some money.
26.Which word best describes the author's brother?

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.
In order to do this, scientists used a previous method that looked for life on other planets. Butinstead, theychanged the method so it could try to determine what places could see us. The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equaling 9.4 trillion (万亿) kilometers. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.
“When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving.”said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study's lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already traveled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger's list.
Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then?
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization (文明) would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn't part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos”.
“So we should not expect aliens (外星人) to show up anytime soon.”Boss said.
- How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years?
A. 319. | B. 1,715. | C. 1,396. | D. 2,034. |
- What does the underlined word “that”in paragraph 6 refer to?
A. Human-made radio waves.
B. Advanced life.
C. The oxygen on Earth.
D. A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.
30.What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?
A. Aliens don't exist.
B. They cannot understand each other.
C. It takes a long time for messages to travel.
D. Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.
31.What is the purpose of the text?
A. To raise readers' interest in aliens.
B.To present new findings published in a study.
C.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.
D. To explain how messages travel between different star systems.
D
A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture.A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.
Gestures can be as informative as speech, but hand gestures are so common that we rarely notice we’re using them.
“Whilememories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestions, those of children are known to be particularly influenced.”said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University, “Kids are used to looking to adults to tell events for them and can be misled even if not intentionally.”
Previous research, for example, has shown that detail-loaded questions often cause false answers;when asked, say “Did you drink juice at the picnic?”,the child is likely to say “yes” even if no juice had been available. It is not that the child is consciously lying, but rather the detail is quickly formed into his or her memory.
To avoid this problem, social workers have long been advised to ask children only open-ended questions, such as “What did you have at the picnic?”.But an open-ended question paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice box,is treated like a detailed question. That is, children become likely to answer falsely.
And it isn’t just a few kids:77% of children gave at least one piece of false information when a detail was suggested by an ordinary gesture. Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids. Broaders said, “As hand movements can impart meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases, it certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.”
In general,Broaders advises parents and other adults to try to be aware of your hands when questioning a child about an event.Otherwise, you might be getting answers that don’t reflect what actually happened.
- What do we know about gestures according to the text?
A.They are rarely used by people.
B.They have not any function at all.
C.They have a certain effect on children.
D.They are often used by social workers.
33.WhyarekidseasytobemisledbygesturesaccordingtoSaraBroaders?
A.Children are easy to tell lies.
B.Their memories are affected easily.
C.These gestures are very attractive.
D.These gestures are used frequently.
34. What does the underlined word“impart”inParagraph6mean?
A. Pass on. | B. Tell apart. | C.Appeal to. | D. Break down. |
- What would be the best title for the text?
A. Gestures—a Useful Way of Education
B. GesturesCan Mislead Children
C. GesturesMean Adults’ Directions
D. GesturesAffect Children Too Much

How to Feel Connected
It’s easy to feel disconnected from what is going on around you in today’s fast-paced world. 36 You can get in touch and feel connected, however, by following the tips below:
Consider why you feel disconnected.
Knowing what is making you feel disconnected can help you choose the best ways to address the problem. Ask yourself: Are you keeping yourself occupied with work too much? Do you rely on electronic communication instead of face-to-face communication? Do you lack friendships that are satisfying? 37
Interact with people in person.
Technology is a great way to stay in touch, but sometimes you need to spend time with other people in person.38 You can also take steps to feel more connected by making small talk with strangers who are sharing parts of your day.
39
You may never know how to improve your relationship unless you ask the right questions. Your loved ones could feel shy about telling you what they need, so asking them opens the doors that can give you some insight on what you can do. Learning this information can help to strengthen your bond.
Show your commitment to your loved ones.
Simply showing up and being there for your loved ones says a lot about how much you value your relationships. 40 Attending family events, or simply visiting someone once a week can help to strengthen your relationship and keep it strong.
Show appreciation.
A simple “thank you” goes a very long way. Unfortunately, it is something that people who are close often take for granted. Telling someone you appreciate their time, love, and efforts can strengthen your bond and help you to become more connected.
A. Be brave to express your love.
B. Ask others what they need from you.
C. Reach out to people to schedule a time to get together.
D. You can have a gift delivered to friends on special occasions.
E. Sometimes you can feel separated and distant from the ones you love.
F.Putting in the time shows them that you are committed and want to stay connected.
G.Targeting your efforts toward those questions allows you to close the distance more effectively.

I was sitting in an introduction to calligraphy workshop when a fellow student asked the teacher, “What do I need to become a professional calligrapher?” We were all 41 with that question. It was as if we were about to learn the secret ingredient to Grandma's cookies.
The answer, to our surprise, was pen and paper.
“The materials are no 42 than those of a beginner calligrapher.” the instructor explained.
The difference between a beginner and professional calligrapher is not in the 43 they use, but rather in the professional's commitment to practice and the 44 they took to learn and do something.
The same goes for any professional at their craft (技能).
When we look up to the expert, we 45 that increasing the quality of materials or having 46 to nicer resources is what makes them great. This assumption doesn't take into account the time it would have taken them to learn 47 new and to achieve their goals.
48 , we want to cut corners, looking for a shortcut. We want to 49 as soon as possible. But it is not a strategy that necessarily benefits us.
My current 50 is to become an independent filmmaker. What would it take, what would I need to make the best 51 ? I too, wanted the shortcut, the 52 way to achieve my goal. Is there a certain camera I need to have, light kit (工具箱), microphone or skill that would lead me right to 53 ? After watching online videos about filmmaking, I realized I had all that I needed to achieve my goal. There was no 54 to filmmaking. It was just going to take time.
It's easy to get 55 in wasting time looking for a solution 56 taking time. In the end, we lose energy and 57 looking for the right tools or answers.
We do things to go fast 58 far. We focus on the end result and don’t allow ourselves to enjoy the 59 . Go far. Reach farther. Take the time to become your best 60 .
