FitzGerald is a 16-year-old long-distance runner from Devon, England, who has set a national record in the under-17s 3, 000 meters, but now she’s getting noticed for her commitment to saving the planet.
FitzGerald finished fourth in the under-20s race at the European Cross Country Championships in Italy last December, but her journey to get there made it even more impressive. To reach Turin in Italy, FitzGerald could have taken a quick flight. However, flying releases carbon dioxide. Instead, she took an overnight coach to Lille in France, then trains to first Paris, then Turin, cycling between stations. Despite her tiring journey, she beat athletes three years older than her.
FitzGerald turned down the chance to compete at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia. She told Athletics Weekly magazine that the decision wasn’t easy but that travelling fills her “with deep concern”. “To have the opportunity to compete for Great Britain in Australia is a privilege,” FitzGerald said. “However, I would never be comfortable flying in the knowledge that people could be losing their livelihoods, homes and loved ones as a result. The least I can do is voice my solidarity (团结一致) with those suffering on the front line of climate breakdown.”
FitzGerald’s refusal to fly has led people to compare her to the climate activist Thunberg, who once travelled to New York by boat. FitzGerald could travel by ship to Australia, but it would take her more than a month to get there. FitzGerald knows her choice to put the needs of the Earth first could affect her athletics career, but she has to act as if it’s an emergency.
Champions for Earth, an organization for environmentally-friendly athletes, said: “She is looking for sponsors and supporters who can help her with the more expensive public transport, accommodation and eco-friendly kit that she requires. It is clear that FitzGerald has the steely determination and focus, combined with the courage and clarity to face a reality quite different to athletes of previous generations.”
24. Why did FitzGerald make headlines?
A. Because she chose green transport instead of a flight to Italy.
B. Because she made a national record in 3, 000 meters in England.
C. Because she devoted all her time to eco-environment in England.
D. Because she won the champion in the cross country race in Italy.
25. What caused FitzGerald to refuse the competition in Australia?
A. Ungreen travelling. B. Tiring competing in Italy.
C. Changeable climate on the way. D. Affected athletics career.
26. What do FitzGerald and Thunberg have in common?
A. Acting immediately if there is an emergency.
B. Preferring taking the ship instead of the flight.
C. Spending all their life in protecting the environment.
D. Choosing the eco-friendly means of transportation.
27. Which can best describe FitzGerald according to Champions for Earth?
A. Honest and outgoing. B. Determined and concentrated.
C. Attractive and modest. D. Courageous and humorous.

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Tech companies around the world have been designing and testing driverless vehicles and the technology is available already.
So, how do they work? The cars are covered in sensors that can detect other cars and obstacles on the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems are used. Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information and processes this to work out when to accelerate, brake and steer. All you have to do is type in the destination.
Sounds like your idea of heaven? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film while “driving” will all be possible with this new technology. In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans, meaning emissions can be reduced. They also drive more safely than people—they don’t get distracted by music or friends, they obey the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times in case of an emergency.
However, there are still many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers will have difficulties making ethical (道德上的) decisions. If a child ran out into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn aside sharply and potentially hurt the car’s passengers instead? Moreover, I personally find driving fun. I’d miss never being behind the wheel myself. There would also be legal questions. Should children or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving licence in the car at all times?
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, many people would be put out of a job by the popularization of driverless cars. Bus, taxi and train drivers would be made unwanted.
I’m not convinced I’d want a driverless car, but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and commonplace on our roads.
28. What do you need to do when using a driverless car?
A. Control the sensors. B. Read the road signs carefully.
C. Check the satellite navigation systems. D. Put the address into the computer.
29. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us about driverless cars?
A. Their emissions. B. Their advantages.
C. Their testing process. D. Their reaction to an emergency.
30. How does the author analyze the shortcomings of driverless cars?
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing their harmful effects.
C. By raising some questions. D. By sharing personal experiences.
31. What does the author think of future driverless cars?
A. They will be less expensive. B. They will consume less energy.
C. They will do more harm than good. D. They will be more strictly controlled.
D
Next time you are struggling with the crossword, try putting the kettle on. Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.
Researchers gave men and women either tea or water and then asked them to complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity known as convergent thinking
In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis, head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. The answer, in this case, would be “match?”. After analysing the results in a way that ruled out the potential effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers, from Peking University in China, found that those who drank the tea performed significantly better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13. 89 in the word association game compared with 12. 94 for water drinkers.
The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea contains caffeine and theanine, which can improve attention, but the 100 participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea—90ml, on average—and carried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have been ignored. “This result showed that the tea drinking event itself—rather than the biological components of tea—played a positive role,” the researchers said.
“Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a specific set of personality traits, such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated (刺激) by tea, the mental representation of a tea drinker is also activated, and they unconsciously think that they should be smarter and more creative,” they added, “Future research should focus on specific mechanisms (机制) and clarify which variables moderate the impact of tea consumption on convergent thinking.
32. What did the participants have to do in the study?
A. Pair the words with each other.
B. Guess the meaning of the words.
C. Find a connection between the words.
D. Tell the differences among the words.
33. What helped a participant get a higher score according to the researchers?
A. The action of drinking tea itself.
B. The participant’s intelligence.
C. The participant’s language ability.
D. The biological components of tea.
34. What can be inferred from the previous research?
A. Drinking tea makes people more active.
B. Drinking tea is popular among the youth.
C. People tend to drink tea more than before.
D. People drinking tea are often thought smart.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Drinking Tea Is Good for Health.
B. Drinking Tea Is A Popular Trend.
C. Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity.
D. Drinking Tea Matters A Lot in Life.

Finding the Energy to Take Action
Many of us think that the thing that is holding us back from living our dreams most is a lack of time. Thus time management is widely believed to be a crucial skill if we want to be able to achieve what we want and to make real change in our life.
Of course, this isn’t wrong as time management is indeed a very important skill and most of us do need more time to do the things we want to do. 36 An even bigger piece that we all too often overlook is energy management. Here we will look at why energy management is such an important aspect of your success and how to start handling it better.
37 Perhaps we want to spend some time learning another language. Maybe we want to cook a nice homemade meal. Or maybe we just want to work out or pay some bills. Either way, there’s a good chance that what will actually happen when you get home is that you’ll sit down on the sofa. 38
What you’re now experiencing is a lack of energy. Once you’ve had dinner, you may well find that you no longer have the enthusiasm for those bills or that workout. 39 So how do you get that energy back?
One simple answer is to go to bed earlier and to wake up later. To start putting sleep at the forefront of your priorities instead of at the back of them. 40 Instead of expending energy doing things that don’t really matter—even stressing over what to wear—understand that your mental energy is on a strict budget and that you need to conserve it to do the things you really want to do!
A. Losing extra weight can provide a powerful energy uplift.
B. But the point is that this is only one piece of the puzzle.
C. Most of us have big plans for what we want to do on any given day.
D. Similarly you should also change some of your priorities.
E. You have the will to be productive but a lack of energy is holding you back.
F. You should look into choosing a diet that will help to give you energy.
G. Then you’ll crash to the point where you can’t get up and do anything constructive at all.

My wife doesn’t share my interests. She went climbing with me once but she found she felt ill as soon as she got about 1, 000 metres. So we decided to follow different hobbies.
A 25. A 26. D 27. B
根据第二段“FitzGerald finished fourth in the under-20s race at the European Cross Country Championships in Italy last December, but her journey to get there made it even more impressive. To reach Turin in Italy, FitzGerald could have taken a quick flight. However, flying releases carbon dioxide. Instead, she took an overnight coach to Lille in France, then trains to first Paris, then Turin, cycling between stations. Despite her tiring journey, she beat athletes three years older than her.(去年12月,菲茨杰拉德在意大利举行的欧洲越野锦标赛上获得了20岁以下年龄组比赛的第四名,但她的旅程让她的成绩更加令人印象深刻。要到达意大利的都灵,菲茨杰拉德本可以快速飞行。然而,飞行会释放二氧化碳。于是,她坐了一整夜的长途汽车去了法国里尔,然后先坐火车去了巴黎,再去了都灵,在车站之间骑自行车。尽管路途疲惫,她还是击败了比她大三岁的运动员)”可知,FitzGerald成为头条新闻是因为她选择了绿色交通,而不是坐飞机去意大利。故选A。
根据第三段“However, I would never be comfortable flying in the knowledge that people could be losing their livelihoods, homes and loved ones as a result. The least I can do is voice my solidarity (团结一致) with those suffering on the front line of climate breakdown.(然而,如果我知道人们可能因此失去生计、家园和亲人,我就永远不会安心飞行。我至少可以表达我对那些在气候崩溃前线受苦的人们的声援)”可知,FitzGerald拒绝参加澳大利亚的比赛,是因为去往澳大利亚需要乘坐飞机,此交通方式不环保。故选A。
根据第四段“FitzGerald’s refusal to fly has led people to compare her to the climate activist Thunberg, who once travelled to New York by boat.(菲茨杰拉德拒绝坐飞机让人们将她与气候活动家Thunberg相提并论,Thunberg曾乘船前往纽约)”和第二段的“To reach Turin in Italy, FitzGerald could have taken a quick flight. However, flying releases carbon dioxide. Instead, she took an overnight coach to Lille in France, then trains to first Paris, then Turin, cycling between stations.(要到达意大利的都灵,菲茨杰拉德本可以快速飞行。然而,飞行会释放二氧化碳。于是,她坐了一整夜的长途汽车去了法国里尔,然后先坐火车去了巴黎,再去了都灵,在车站之间骑自行车)”可知,菲茨杰拉德和Thunberg的共同之处是他们都选择环保的交通工具。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“It is clear that FitzGerald has the steely determination and focus, combined with the courage and clarity to face a reality quite different to athletes of previous generations.(很明显,菲茨杰拉德有着钢铁般的决心和专注力,再加上勇气和清晰,能够面对与前几代运动员截然不同的现实)”可知,FitzGerald是有决心和专注的,可用determined和concentrated描述她,故选B。
C
D 29. B 30. C 31. A
根据文章第二段中“All you have to do is type in the destination. (你所要做的就是输入目的地。)”可知,使用无人驾驶汽车需要输入目的地,故选D项。
29.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Sounds like your idea of heaven? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film while “driving” will all be possible with this new technology. In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans, meaning emissions can be reduced. They also drive more safely than people—they don’t get distracted by music or friends, they obey the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times in case of an emergency.
根据文章第四段中“If a child ran out into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn aside sharply and potentially hurt the car’s passengers instead? Moreover, I personally find driving fun. I’d miss never being behind the wheel myself. There would also be legal questions. Should children or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving licence in the car at all times?
根据最后一段“I’m not convinced I’d want a driverless car, but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and commonplace on our roads. (我不确定我会想要一辆无人驾驶汽车,但它们在我们的道路上变得更加实惠和普遍只是时间问题。)”可知,作者似乎认为自动驾驶汽车会变得更加普及和更负担得起,而不受到个人意见的影响。故选A项。

40.根据空前的“To start putting sleep at the forefront of your priorities instead of at the back of them. (开始把睡眠放在你优先事项的最前沿,而不是放在他们的后面。)”可知,应该学会把重要的事情放到前面,结合空后“Instead of expending energy doing things that don’t really matter—even stressing over what to wear—understand that your mental energy is on a strict budget and that you need to conserve it to do the things you really want to do!(不要将精力花在无关紧要的事情上——甚至为穿什么而烦恼——要明白你的精神能量是有严格预算的, 你需要保存它来做你真正想做的事情!”

此处用固定短语keep an optimistic attitude to/towards sth.,意为“保持对……的乐观态度”,介词应用to或towards。故将from改为to/towards。
故将what改为that。
故将both改为all。
