The bell for lunch rang at Glendale Primary School. However, instead of heading to the canteen like all the other children did, Jonah, a new student at the school, went to the library. Other than the noise of the air-conditioner, the library was quiet and there was barely a soul in sight. Far in a corner, he spotted Mrs Lim, the librarian, who was too busy shelving some books to pay any attention to him. The library was near to the canteen. Jonah could hear children laughing and chatting. He wished he was outside playing with some friends but he did not let this bother him.
Suddenly, Jonah heard a sound in the corner. He looked around and saw a pair of eyes looking at him from behind, the bookshelves. Jonah turned back, eyes as wide as saucers (茶碟). “Oh dear!” he whispered. He peeked (窥视) over his shoulder again and saw a smaller boy walking towards him.
The boy pulled out the chair next to Jonah and sat down. “I’m Henry. Why are you reading here when you could be playing with your friends instead?” asked he. “Uh...” Jonah looked around the library, avoiding Henry’s gaze (注视). He did not want Henry to know the real reason why he was in the library. What would Henry think of him if he knew Jonah did not have any friends? It would make Jonah feel more uncomfortable.
As Jonah turned the page, he realized Henry was still sitting there, watching him steadily.
“I know how you feel. Just say hello to someone today,” Henry encouraged Jonah. “I promise they’ll respond. Once you’ve made the first move, it just gets easier.”
Jonah appreciated the advice and thanked him before making his way out of the library. In the hallway outside the library, a boy from Jonah’s class was crouched on the floor, picking up pens and pencils that had dropped out of his pencil case. Jonah remembered what Henry had advised him to do.
“Hello, I’m Jonah. Let me help you,” he offered.
The boy looked up at him. “Thank you! My name is Ruben.”
Victory at last, Jonah thought, feeling proud of himself.

Not every architectural landmark is grand in scale, with splendid decorations, or amazing colors. Suzhou Gardens may just be the opposite.
When a group of monks during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) first constructed Lion Grove Garden, they may have just wanted to enjoy a quiet place, hidden away from urban noise, while in the following centuries, this charming garden - most notable for its waterside rockeries resembling the shape of lions—has attracted a constant stream of celebrity guests, who have left a long list of poems, paintings and historical anecdotes (轶事).
In recent years, nine of the best-known classical gardens of Suzhou, including Lion Grove Garden, Humble Administrator’s Garden and Great Wave Pavilion, were registered into the World Heritage List. As UNESCO remarks, “Classical Chinese garden design, which seeks to recreate natural landscapes in miniature (缩略图), is nowhere better illustrated than in the nine gardens, which reflect the profound natural beauty in Chinese culture and inspire people to pursue harmony with the world.”
Nowadays, relevant administrations have been trying to restore the historical landscapes of Suzhou’s classical gardens. Consequently, last year, a new project was launched allowing tourists in small groups to reserve places to enter the garden in the early morning before the regular opening time. Their visit ended with them completing the last step in making a traditional folding fan, adding a poem about the garden on its surface. The experience was also regarded as a way to help people understand the wisdom, elegance and philosophical worldview of the ancient Chinese literati (文人).
The delicate beauty of the gardens still flows via the canals that snake across Suzhou. Hardly felt, their strength in shaping the city’s character seems to last forever.
8.What’s the purpose of building the Lion Grove Garden?
    A.To share historical anecdotes.

    9.What do Suzhou Gardens show?
    A.Splendid decorations.
    B.Grand beauty.
    C.Human-nature harmony.
    D.Amazing colors.
10.What can we know about the project from Paragraph 4?
    A.It featured traditional Chinese elements.
B.Small groups without reservation were welcome.
C.Its main aim was to help people approach poems.
D.It was launched when the gardens were open to the public.
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Suzhou Gardens, a place of national pride.
B.Suzhou Gardens, a place with natural beauty.
C.Suzhou Gardens, a place that shows the decorations and colors.
D.Suzhou Gardens, a place that reflects the philosophy and culture.

While the rest of us are sleeping, freshwater turtles (龟) from Central America to Asia are getting out of the water and basking (月光浴) at night. There have been reports of this behavior before, but now a new study is the first to document the widespread occurrence. The findings suggest this may be a common and almost entirely overlooked aspect of many species’ ecology.
Dr. Donald McKnight, one of the researchers, said he and a colleague first observed freshwater turtles night basking at the Ross River in Townsville, Australia. “We think it’s related to temperature. The water is staying so warm at night that it’s actually warmer than the turtles like to be and they can cool down by coming out of the water,” says McKnight.
For the study, researchers put cameras to watch the night activity of as many freshwater turtle species as possible. The cameras were set up in 25 locations. They were programmed to take a photo every two minutes. They collected data on 29 species of freshwater turtles.
It would be lovely to think the turtles are just enjoying some leisure time when things are quiet. But the researchers note that in most cases, the turtles got out of water when the water was too warm and the air was cooler. Given the warming planet, that’s admittedly a bit depressing. However, not all of the nighttime baskers were escaping too-warm water. According to the study, turtles in India exhibited more basking on cooler nights, rather than warmer nights, and those in Africa spent more time basking at night in winter than in summer. The reasons for these differences are unclear. It may be that at some sites or seasons, turtles are escaping unfavourably warm water temperatures, while at others, they are taking advantage of the warm air to increase their body temperature and escape unfavourably cold water.
Regardless of the “why” behind different species’ reasons for midnight basking, it’s a fascinating look at behaviors not previously documented by scientists. And it is at least encouraging to know that turtles are figuring out important behaviors tied to climate change.
12.Why do the freshwater turtles from Australia get out of water at night?
    A.To search for extra food.
    B.To avoid natural enemies.
    C.To cool themselves down.
    D.To enjoy the quietness outside.
13.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A.How the study was conducted.
    B.What the study brought about.
C.Why the study was carried out.
    D.Where the study was made.
14.Which of the following are the researchers certain about?
A.Turtles in Africa flee water often on summer nights.
B.The water is unfavorable for turtles to survive in India
C.The reasons for turtles’ different behaviors are obvious.
D.Night basking is caused by the change of water temperature.
15.How does the author feel about the finding?
    A.Skeptical. B.Positive.
    C.Surprised. D.Desperate.

    二、七选五
We clearly live in an era with little patience. Entire TV series are available at once on streaming services, and burning questions are solved in seconds via a search engine. This instant satisfaction, undoubtedly, is killing our ability to wait. 16 . Here are some strategies to pick up that magic mix if you weren’t born with it.
    ● Visualize success
There’s no need to set a real situation where you wait in a super long grocery checkout line to test yourself. Simply visualizing it helps a lot. See yourself smiling and breathing as you wait for the line to move. 17 . For example, you could say, “it’s not bad to enjoy this magazine while waiting”. Your mind will start to process the picture as a real experience and help to set you up for future successes.
    ● Slow down
Racing around is not necessarily the only way to get what you want. 18 . Most adults do not feel happy when they’re rushing, and children are even less capable of doing it with a good attitude. Instead of sweating through your routine, turn on some background music you like and move at a normal pace.
    ● 19
The ability to let your mind wander, whether daydreaming or actively applying your imagination, is a skill that improves patience. 20 . Take a break and do something that could free your brain from the work that takes tons of energy. This helps you build up your staying power, so next time you might be more patient and more likely to focus on your task.
    A.Learn to distract yourself
B.Add some positive words if possible
C.Therefore, we are getting more and more impatient
D.You don’t have to get the whole paper done in one go
E.We get so caught up in hurrying that we get stuck in that mode
F.But sometimes, a fast pace does improve our working efficiency

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

And it is at least encouraging to know that turtles are figuring out important behaviors tied to climate change.(不管不同物种午夜晒太阳的原因背后的“原因”是什么,这是对科学家以前没有记录的行为的一个有趣的观察。知道海龟正在发现与气候变化有关的重要行为,至少是令人鼓舞的)”推知,作者对研究的发现持积极态度。故选B。
    16.G 17.B 18.E 19.A 20.D

    【导语】这是一篇说明文。我们生活在一个没有耐心的时代,即时的满足感正在扼杀我们等待的能力。本文介绍了几种重新找回等待能力的方法。
16.根据上文“This instant satisfaction, undoubtedly, is killing our ability to wait.(这种即时的满足感正在扼杀我们等待的能力)”可知,即时的满足感正在扼杀我们等待的能力,导致我们等待能力的丧失不可避免,与G项“Thus, the loss of this mixed quality of tolerance and calmness is unavoidable(因此,这种宽容和冷静的复杂的品质的丧失是不可避免的)”表达的含义一致,故选G项。
17.根据下文“For example, you could say, ‘it’s not bad to enjoy this magazine while waiting’.(例如,你可以说,‘在等待的时候欣赏这本杂志还不错’)”可推理出上文讲的是要说一些积极的话语,与B项“Add some positive words if possible(如果可能的话,添加一些积极的词语)”表达的含义一致,故选B项。
18.根据上文“Racing around is not necessarily the only way to get what you want.(四处奔波不一定是得到你想要的东西的唯一途径)”可知,上文提到了四处奔波的模式,因此E项“We get so caught up in hurrying that we get stuck in that mode(我们太匆忙了,以至于陷入了那种模式)”符合题意,选项中的that mode指代上文提到的“四处奔波”。故选E项。
19.根据下文“Take a break and do something that could free your brain from the work that takes tons of energy. (休息一下,做一些可以让你的大脑从消耗大量能量的工作中解放出来的事情)”可知本段建议的方法是要学会分散注意力,与A项“Learn to distract yourself(学会分散自己的注意力)”表达的含义一致,故选A项。
20.根据上文“The ability to let your mind wander, whether daydreaming or actively applying your imagination, is a skill that improves patience.(无论是做白日梦还是积极发挥想象力,这些让你的思维开小差的能力都是一种提高耐心的技能)”可知,此处上下文说的是要学会让大脑适时放松,以利于提高自己的耐心,分析待选项,D项“You don’t have to get the whole paper clone in one go(你不必一次搞定整个论文)”符合语境,一次性搞定整个论文不利于提高自己的耐心,所以D项是上文的支持性信息。故选D项。

As our distinguished foreign language teacher, your aid can help us a lot. If you are available on this Sunday, I together with the whole Talk and Talk staff am waiting for your coming. I’d appreciate it if you take my invitation into consideration.
    Yours,

    47.Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Its abrupt appearance scared my horse, making it run off the track wildly. I spared no efforts to hold on as hard as I could and my dad was trying to keep up, extremely worried about my safety. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath. Relieved, we looked around trying to find the track. However, it was nowhere to be found. So aimlessly did the frightened horse run that we got lost unconsciously.
    Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Nothing in sight was familiar and neither did we know where the farm house was. Just at the point of desperation, from the distance came a faint voice. “It must be Uncle Paul,” I exclaimed excitedly. That we didn’t come back for dinner made him realize something unusual might have happened. So my uncle went out to look for us. Finally, we reached our uncle’s farm house safe and sound.
