Barditch High School decided to hold an All-School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hands to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for fifty years, was wheeled to the Park.
Some eyes rolled and there were few low groans(嘟囔声)when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined.
Then Ms. Yates started to speak:
“I can't tell you how pleased I am to be here. I haven't seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I haven't appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth of your children, in my imagination.”
Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued:
“It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path."
“There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.”
There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. The clapping turned into cheering, then into a deafening roar(呼喊). Lawyers, truck drivers, bankers and models were rubbing their eyes or crying openly with no shame all because of the words from a long forgotten English teacher from their hometown.

New emojis(表情符号)appear every year. The updates come from a California-based non-profit committee called Unicode Consortium. Each year, the emoji committee releases new emojis that will update the existing keyboard.
Jennifer Daniel, chair of the committee, says that it's not the organization coming up with these new characters. It's the public.
The first emoji keyboard was created in Japan in the 1990s by mobile phone company designer Shigetaka Kurita. Kurita created emojis because the company offered email communications that were limited to 250 characters and an emoji is only one character each but can be used to say more. Emojis have become popular around the world-92 percent of the online population uses them.
“They aren't tied to any language. They aren't tied to any region of the world," she says.
Anyone is allowed to submit(提交)new emojis, and if they make a strong enough case, Unicode will accept them. “We do get suggestions in lots of different languages from around the world,” says Daniel.
An emoji idea has to meet certain criteria(标准). These criteria include its clear differences, whether it can be used with existing emojis and whether it can have multiple meanings. The popular face with “tears of joy" emoji, for example, is easy to identify, which makes it distinct. You can pair it with many other emojis to convey how you are feeling. Additionally, this emoji has adopted many meanings.
Kids today are very familiar with emojis and how to use them. And the keyboard has got more than 3,600 emoji characters. “They became more and more comfortable and confident using emojis, which means they're more willing to take risks," Daniel says of younger generations who grow up with the keyboard.
23. Which best describes emojis?
A. They vary from place to place. B. They are more expressive than words.
C. They make daily talk more difficult. D. They are limited in computers.
24. What can we learn about Unicode Consortium?
A. It gives emojis new meanings. B. It invents new emojis every year.
C. It created the first emoji keyboard. D. It judges the submission of new emojis.
25. Why is the popular face with “tears of joy” emoji mentioned?
A. To prove its difference from others.
B. To let the emoji be accepted by more people.
C. To make the criteria understood more easily.
D. To show its popularity among young people.
26. What's the younger generation's attitude towards using emojis?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Cautious. D. Critical.
D
Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long-term scars on children's bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.
Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children's chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres(端粒), says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Telomeres are special DNA sequences(序列)which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.
Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person.
In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children's telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the children's telomeres—in cells obtained by wiping the insides of their cheeks-at ages 5 and 10.
Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.
Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says.
The study confirms a small but growing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.
27. What does the new study find?
A. Hardship can change a child's memory. B. Violence can speed up a child's aging.
C. Violence leaves scars on a child's mind. D. Hardship has an effect on a child's mind.
28. What does the underlined word "they" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Telomeres. B. Children. C. Chromsomes D. DNA sequences.
29. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Violence can cause quick cell death in children's body.
B. Telomeres can help prevent chromosomes from separating.
C. Children who have shorter telomeres have heart attacks later.
D. Being treated badly will make a child's telomeres shorten faster.
30. What is the best title for the text?
A. Violence and Telomeres B. The Function of Telomeres
C. Violence Makes Children Aging D. DNA Influences Children's Growth

Habits to Be a Highly Effective Student
Some students are able to get straight A's and at the same time serve as the president of three clubs. However, some students struggle to keep their GPA(grade point average)above 3.0. 31 Although it's true that everyone's IQ is different, good study habits are very important. Here are several habits you should adopt to get good grades.
32 If you haven't had a "planner", get one. Many people use their computers and smart phones to make a schedule. The problem with that approach is that they are major distractions(使人分心的事物). Instead, get an old-fashioned paper and pen planner.
Create a weekly schedule. 33 Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to schoolwork. That way you know exactly how much you can achieve each day.
Take frequent, short breaks. Taking a break from studying for 15 minutes every hour will help keep you refreshed. 34 If you don't take a break, you may find yourself daydreaming or even falling asleep. Take some time for some water, a snack or a quick chat with a friend.
Take care of yourself. During the final exam week, it is common for students to fall behind on sleep and meals. Make sure you get a good night's sleep and have regular meals. Studying while you are hungry or sleepy is ineffective and will slow you down in the long run. Also try to make the time for family and friends. 35
A. Keep things organized.
B. Keep away from your computers.
C. Of course, not everyone needs breaks.
D. And they seem to spend all of their time in studying.
E. Our brains are not meant to work for hours non-stop.
F. Having a good support system will help with all the stress.
G. Then in the daily schedule, make a list of things to do each hour.

(Text 8)
Recently, I needed to find a book for one of my classes at the university, but I didn't know if the university library had it in their collection, so I went to the library website and searched for the book online. You can search either by subject, title or author, and the website will tell you if the book is checked in or checked out by others. In my case, the book was still available, so I went to the library the next day and found it on the shelf using the library catalog number. I then went to the circulation desk and checked the book out using my university ID card. In most cases, students and teachers can check out books for up to one month, and you can renew them if you still want to hang on to them. If you return them after that, then they are overdue, and you have to pay a late fee. If you lose a book, then you have to pay to replace it. I often use the library and check out books instead of buying them if I can. Borrowing books can save you money in the long run.

32. A根据空后的“If you haven't had a ‘planner’, get one.”可知, 作者强调要有一个记事簿, 即让一切事情有条理。干扰项B项“远离你的电脑”概括片面, 与下文中的“use their computers and smart phones to make a schedule”也不符合。
33. G本条建议是列个每周计划表, G项“然后, 在每日计划表中把每小时要做的事情列表”承接上文, 符合语境。

应用文写作
My Most Admirable Scientist
Dear teachers and classmates.
My most admirable scientist is Stephen Hawking, famous for his great scientific achievements in physics and his great spirit of fighting against the deadly disease. Hawking was more than courageous as the disease never let him down and his survival against the disease indicates that never should people lose hope. Optimism and humor are his most remarkable features, which help Hawking fight against the disease for over 50 years.
As to his influence on me, I've learnt to stay optimistic whenever in trouble. Besides, just like Hawking, remaining curious is the drive for me to explore the unknown. As long as I keep on conducting trials and am never afraid of hardships, I'll succeed in time.
That's all. Thank you.
