I always wanted to be a scientist. When I found that summer research program, I thought I had found the perfect topic for my thesis(论文) and a stepping stone to my dream academic career. The position—measuring soil condition as part of an undergraduate research program—had felt like the answer I had spent years looking for. This was just the program I wanted and I wasn't going to consider other options.
Then came a rejection email. I felt lost and hopeless. Thinking the rejection meant the end of the road for my science career, I was also a little regretful. There had been more programs I could have applied for. But only later would I see that instead, it provided an exciting new direction to follow.
Not long after the rejection email, the professor running the research program invited me to observe the work being done in her lab. I jumped at the chance, and a few weeks later, she invited me to talk with her about potential thesis projects I could pursue in her lab. What she proposed didn't seem as exciting as the original project I had applied to, but I felt I wasn't in a position to be picky; this was a great opportunity and I was going to give it my all.
Then I found myself working with a robotics professor, and the work introduced me to a whole new way to think about my research direction. In the end, I had a thesis and a new scientific interest to pursue.
When I applied to graduate school, I decided I would be selective about the options I pursued rather than casting abroad net. I realized that rather than setting plans in stone, sometimes I need to take the opportunities that are offered, even if they don't sound exactly perfect at the time, and make the most of them. And I've learned to look at each rejection as are direction instead.
    4. What might the author regret after being rejected?
    A. He should have chosen another major.
    B. He should have applied for more programs.
    C. He shouldn't have dreamt of being a scientist.
    D. He shouldn't have spent years looking for an answer.
    5. What did the professor ask the author to do?
    A. Take any possible opportunity.
    B. Help setup a new lab.
    C. Get involved in her research projects.
    D. Put all efforts into research work.
    6. Which word can be used to describe the author?
    A. Wise. B. Honest. C. Talented. D. Picky.
    7. What message did the author want to convey?
    A. To be a scientist is not really easy.
    B. We should make one choice at a time.
    C. To choose a research program is important.
    D. We should learn to turn rejection into redirection.
    C
Two years ago, enormous fires swept through some 46 million acres of forest in Russia, the country's worst fire season on record. Now, researchers have a clearer sense of just how significant the 2021 boreal(北方的)forest fires were in terms of emissions. The fires produced more planet-heating carbon dioxide than any other extreme fire event that has occurred since the turn of the 21st century, according to a study.
Boreal forests grow where it is very cold. The trees that live in this type of forest grow slowly and seal (封存) carbon in their trunks and roots for hundreds of years, comprising a collection of trapped emissions that researchers call a carbon sink. But rising temperatures and related drought in these historically cool regions have led to an increase in extreme wildfire activity and threaten to release the carbon stored in the trees that grow there, transforming a carbon sink into a carbon source.
In all, fires in boreal forests r released the carbon sink and produced nearly half a billion metric tons of carbon in 2021.That's more carbon than the entire continent of Australia produced the same year, though some of the emissions produced by the fires will be sucked backup as forests regrow.
The researchers obtained the data for their study by tracking concentrations of emissions in the atmosphere using satellites, and then they put that information into a computer model to determine where, geographically, those emissions came from. They found that boreal forests, which typically produce about 10 percent of the globe's annual wildfire emissions, accounted for 23 percent of the world's wildfire emissions in 2021—more than twice as much as normal.
Canadell, whole d the study, is most concerned about the study's main takeaway: Boreal forests have served an important and underappreciated role in sequestering carbon emissions, but climate change threatens to release that carbon. “We need to be very careful with these systems in terms of their future development,” he said.
    8. What is the function of paragraph 2?
    A. To ex pain the source of carbon.
    B. To illustrate two scientific concepts.
    C. To indicate the seriousness of the fire.
    D. To show the importance of boreal forests.
    9. How did the scientists get needed data?
    A. By employing technology. B. By searching on the website.
    C. By analyzing previous data. D. By turning to the firefighters.
    10. What does the underlined word “sequestering” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. Assessing. B. Increasing. C. Monitoring. D. Preventing.
    11. What is mainly talked about in the text?

The painting “Portrait(肖像) of Omai” was finished in 1774 and was sold to John Magnier in 2001.When he wants to take the painting out of the country, the government believes it's important for Britain and stops him doing so. Yet British buyers can't raise the money needed to get it from Mr. Magnier before the deadline of a ban on exporing it. A solution may now involve the Getty Museum in Los Angeles; it could be a model for other treasured artworks too expensive for the nation to buy.
Most countries have export restrictions on their cultural treasures. Many European countries allow the government to step in and buy any work offered for sale. Brit in operates a system called Waverley standards, balancing the aims of keeping important pieces and protecting the rights of their owners. Valuable pieces are evaluated at monthly meetings of a committee of owners, dealers and art historians. The most important works are kept in Britain temporarily while institutions at home try to raise the funds to buy them.
Mr. Magnier paid £10.3 million for “Portrait of Omai”. Now he wants £50 million for it, a fair value. The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in London has been trying to raise the cash, but only half the money had been raised. The NPG's answer is to buy the painting together with the Getty Museum, spending half its time in London and the other half in California. In 2015 a similar arrangement was agreed between France and the Netherlands to share ownership of a pair of important portraits by Rembrandt.
The Waverley standards were meant to keep Britain's cultural treasures at home. But protecting an artwork for the nation for some time maybe all that can be achieved. Closed for three years for repair, the NPG hopes it will open its doors again with “Portrait of Omai” as its glory.
    12. What can we learn about Magnier from Para. l?
    A. He painted a portrait of an Englishman.
    B. He wanted to take the painting abroad.
    C. He illegally took hold of the painting.
    D. He solved the problem with a portrait.
    13. What do the Waverley standards do to keep cultural treasures at home?
    A. They set aside time for home purchase.
    B. They checkout annual export licences.
    C. They decide a ban on the rare treasures
    D. They advertise the sales of the treasures.
    14. What will be the final solution to “Portrait of Omai”?
    A. Britain takes it for permanent ownership.
    B. Mr. Magnier takes it abroad after the deadline.
    C. Britain works with France to share its ownership.
    D. NPG and the Getty Museum share its ownership.
    15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. The Cooperation of World's Galleries
    B. The Protection of Galleries' Paintings
C.A New Way to Save Art for the Nation
D.A Clever Way to Stop Loss of Paintings

I am not good at sports, but one of the most memorable days of my life is the day of my fourth-grade sports meet. The day does not standout because I won prizes. It stands out because I saw just how much my father loved me.
Before setting out for school that morning, I washed my face and sat down to eat breakfast as usual. My mom was already at work. My dad had just gotten home from the nightshift in his factory, so he helped me get ready for school. While we were eating, he told me that he had something important to tell me. My dad was always so strong—I didn't think anything could frighten him.
He said his boss had called him into his office before he left and setup a meeting for later in the morning. There had been a lot of talk going around about layoffs(解雇) .My dad thought he was going to be one of the unlucky ones. I was completely surprised. My dad had worked for the factory for twelve years, longer than I had been alive. Our family knew layoffs were coming, but we just thought Dad would not lose his job since he had worked there for so long.
My dad told me not to worry about anything. He said everything would work itself out and that we'd make it. I believed him, but I could also tell how worried he really was.
Before he dropped me off at school, I told him he didn't have to come to the sports meet. I knew he had a lot on his mind and probably wouldn't want to stand around in the heat just to watch me come in last place in all of my events. He just shook his head and promised he would be there. He told me to do my best and not worry about winning or losing. He wished me good luck before kissing me goodbye.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
There was a class before the sports meet began.

After finishing the running event, I learned he had been laid off.

根据第四段中“using satellites, and then they put that information into a computer model”可知,科学家在研究过程中使用了高科技来统计数据。

故选A。
23.D 根据语境的搭配(spend time on sth.),代词it和句意看,这里说的是作者有限的“时间(time) ”, 因此选D。
    25.A 在手机上“浏览(look through) ”新闻。故选A。
故选A。
故选A。

inspired by表示“从……

    Dear Bob,
I'm writing to invite you to visit the Provincial Party History Museum, which is a very famous red tourist attraction. The visit is very meaningful, because it will enhance our knowledge of party history and I'm sure you will learn more about our great Communist Party of China. We'll meet at the school gate at 8:00 am this Friday and assemble at 11:00 am at the west gate of the museum to return. The weather is cold and dry, please take drinking water and wear enough clothes to keep warm.
I warmly invite you to join us at your convenience. I am looking forward to seeing you this Friday.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua
    One possible version:
There was a class before the sports meet began. During the class, I couldn't stop thinking about my dad and the meeting. The teacher broke my train of thought with her words, “Sports meet time!” I saw my dad as I was getting ready for my running event. He waved at me with a big smile on his face. When I saw how happy he was, I thought the boss might have given him a pay rise. I heard him cheering for me as Iran. I didn't win the race, but I tried my best.
After finishing the running event, I learned he had been laid off. I was shocked. He looked so happy and I couldn't understand why he was smiling. As the day wore on, I continued to compete and lose. Every time I looked at my dad he was smiling and cheering me on. I don't remember all the events I took part in, but I remember my dad's smiling face. And I realized on that day how much my father loved me.
