Are you an oldest child, a middle child, a youngest child or an only child? Nowadays, it is an accepted fact that our positions in the family possibly have the strongest influence on our characters.
Firstborn children often have to look after their younger brothers and sisters, so they’re usually responsible as adults. They also may be ambitious (有雄心的) and they make good leaders. On the negative side, the oldest children can be insecure. This is because when the second child is born, they lose some of their parents’ attention.
Middle children are more relaxed than the oldest children, probably because their parents will be more relaxed themselves when the second child arrives. They’re usually very sociable—the kind of people who get on with everybody. They are also more aware of what other people need, because they grow up between older and younger brothers and sisters. For the same reason, they’re often quite good at solving arguments. On the other hand, middle children sometimes are not ambitious and don’t have directions in life.
The youngest children are often very outgoing. This is the way they try to get the attention of both their parents and their older brothers and sisters. But they might depend too much on other people, because they have always been the baby of the family.
Only children usually do very well at school, because they have a lot of contact (联系) with adults. They get a lot of love and attention from their parents, so they’re often very self-confident. They’re also independent, as they spend much time by themselves. But they might get quite selfish and impatient.
26. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “insecure” in Paragraph 2?
A. Worried. B. Honest. C. Powerful. D. Tired.
27. Who can be more caring friends?

American researchers have built a human-like robot that will take part in an international soccer competition.
The name of the robot is ARTEMIS. It stands 142 centimeters tall and weighs 38 kilograms. The researchers said ARTEMIS is one of only a few humanoid robots that can run. It can also jump and walk on different kinds of surfaces without losing its balance. The robot also can kick a ball and remain standing even when it is kicked or hit. The engineers who built the robot said it can walk 2.1 meters per second. This can make ARTEMIS the world’s fastest walking humanoid robot.
The team behind the robot is continuing to test ARTEMIS to prepare for the international RoboCup competition set for July in France. Student researchers often take the robot on walks around the university grounds. Over the next few weeks, they will work on perfecting the robot’s soccer playing skills.
“If your robot cannot even play a game of soccer, how would you be able to use these robots for more important things, such as saving people’s lives?” An engineer said. He noted that the same technologies used for soccer-playing robots are also used to develop robots to help with firefighting and disaster operations in the future.
One member of the team, student Justin Quan, said his personal goal was engineering robots that could improve people’s lives. “Seeing these robots helping push the robot technology to the next level is really exciting because the dream gets closer,” he said.
