Chinese became an official language of the UN in 1946. More and more UN offices and staff members work with the Chinese language. April 20 marks United Nations Chinese Language Day. On this day, people around the world celebrate the Chinese language. Teens has invited three Chinese learners to share stories of their studies.
    Practicing Chinese with Chinese friends
I started taking a short beginners’ course in Chinese when I was in the UK. Since I came to China in 2021, I have been using an APP on my phone called Hello Chinese. I find reading the small stories on there really helpful. I first read them with pinyin and the Chinese characters and then I’ll read them again with just the characters.
Also, going out for dinner with my Chinese friends can be a good way to learn. In a social setting, I’m a bit more confident to practice speaking naturally spoken Chinese.
    David House. UK
    Chinese can make language simpler
When I worked at Tsinghua University, one of my jobs was translating information from Chinese to English. Each day I would find something new and interesting about Chinese. Chinese can be emotive (有感染力的) and often give out information simpler than English. For example, a Chinese sign on campus might read, “疫情期间隔坐,人人有责”. But the English sign would read: “During the pandemic, please sit apart from each other. We are all responsible for doing our part.” The English one is much longer and not as simple.
    Madeleine King. Australia
Learning is fun with tongue twisters
I’ve always been amazed by tongue twisters(绕口令)in Chinese. English has its own tongue twisters, for example: “Sally sells seashells by the sea coast”. But Chinese takes it a step forward with its use of four tones (声调).
As a native English speaker, I first learned Chinese through the use of pinyin. But as I found out, even when the letters in pinyin are the same, different tones can result in different Chinese words, like 马 vs 妈. But things get harder when this is used in tongue twisters!
Can you manage this one? Fourteen is fourteen, forty is forty; fourteen is not forty, forty is not fourteen.
    Patrick McCarthy. US
    21. What are the ways that David learn Chinese?
① He takes short courses in China.
② He reads small stories on an app.
③ He reads pinyin loudly every day.
④ He goes out for dinner with Chinese friends.
    A. ① ③ B. ② ④ C. ① ④ D. ② ③
    22. According to Madeleine, the difference between Chinese and English is that
    A. Chinese has more words than English.
    B. English can make people feel more emotions.
    C. Chinese signs are usually simpler and shorter.
    D. English is easier to speak and write than Chinese.
    23. Why does Patrick think tongue twisters in Chinese are harder?
    A. Chinese characters have four tones.
    B. English tongue twisters are usually shorter.
    C. Many Chinese words share the same meanings.
    D. Each Chinese character has a different meaning.
    24. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
    A. To show the influence of Chinese.
    B. To tell Chinese is an official language.
    C. To tell how to translate Chinese into English.
    D. To show the charm of Chinese tongue twisters.
    25. In which part of a magazine can you read this passage?
    A. Health and sports. B. Language and culture.
    C. History and population. D. Science and environment.

①Many people may throw away the nuts after eating fruits, but inheritors of nut carving have instead collected them and turned them into artworks.
②“One nut, from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, can be made into fan pendants, earrings, buttons, seals, etc.” said Tan Wanhai, 48, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving.
③Weifang nut carving can date back to the Qing Dynasty. During that time, retired imperial craftsman Wang Dayan spread the skill to the local people in Shandong province. Craftsmen back then often used peach nuts to show off their artistic skills. Due to the high level of carving skills required and its rich artistic content which show many different elements, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
④Tan has studied the art of nut carving for the past 25 years and has created many nut carvings along the way. Yet, the 48-year-old craftsman also said that the journey of bringing this kind of masterpiece to life is not always so easy. “Unlike some nuts like olive nuts which have a flat surface, each peach nut has its own special texture like human fingerprints,” Tan said, adding that craftsmen have to study each peach nut to carefully plan out their artwork.
⑤Craftsmen also need to have a lot of knowledge when it comes to carving nuts. According to Tan, they have to master skills in painting, seal carving and calligraphy from many traditional cultures. “In order to show traditional stories or legends from ancient times, I need to read many books to enrich myself.”
⑥It is this kind of devotion that Tan and others have that allows the heritage of Weifang nut carving to thrive in an era when many traditional skills are gradually disappearing.“In recent years, Weifang nut carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China thanks to their inventive design and creative ideas,” Tan said. This popularity, in turn, has also attracted many people to learn the skill of nut carving and even become inheritors to pass down the skill to future generations.
    26. Which of the following can be the artworks of nut carving?
①fans ②seals ③buttons ④ earrings ⑤nuts
    A. ②③④ B. ①②③ C. ②③⑤ D. ①④⑤
    27. What do we know about Weifang nut carving?
    A. It was first invented by Tan Wanhai. B. It dates back to 25 years ago.
    C. It was first invented by Wang Dayan. D. It dates back to the Qing Dynasty.
    28. Why is nut carving not easy for craftsmen according to Tan Wanhai?
    A. Because they need to be good at making plans.
    B. Because they need to be good at telling stories.
    C. Because they need to master different kinds of skills.
    D. Because they need to have knowledge about modern culture.
29.What does the underlined word “thrive ” mean in Paragraph 6 ?
    A. become popular B. become important C. become helpful D. become healthy
30.Which can be the suitable title for the passage?

“Well, I’ll eat the cake,” Alice said. “If I get taller, I can reach the key on the table. And if get smaller, I can go under the door into the garden.” Then she finished the cake very soon.
“I shall be as tall as a house in a minute,” she said. She tried to look down at her feet, and could only just see them.
Just then her head hit the ceiling of the room. She was now about three meters tall. Quickly, she took the key from the table and hurried to the garden door. But she was too tall to go through the door. She began to cry. The tears ran down her face, and soon there was large pool of salt water all around her on the floor. Suddenly she heard a voice, and she stopped crying to listen.
“Oh, the Duchess(公爵夫人), the Duchess! She’ll be very angry! I’m late, and she’s waiting for me. Oh dear, oh dear!”
It was the White Rabbit again. He was hurrying down the long room, with a pair of white gloves in one hand and a fan in the other hand.
Alice was afraid, but she needed help. So she said in a low voice, “Oh, please, sir.”
Her voice frightened(使惊恐)the Rabbit. He dropped the gloves and the fan, and ran away quickly.
Alice picked up the gloves and the fan. The room was very hot, so she cooled down with the fan. She said, “Oh dear! How strange everything is today! Shall I get smaller during the night?”
She began to feel very unhappy again, but then she looked down at her hand. She was wearing one of the Rabbit's white gloves. “How did I get it on my hand?” she thought. “Oh, I’m getting smaller again! I’m already less than a meter tall and getting smaller every second! How can I stop it?” She saw the fan in her other hand. “It must be the fan!” she thought, and quickly she dropped it.
She was now very, very small, and the key was still lying on the table.
“Things are worse than ever,” thought poor Alice. She turned away from the door, and fell into salt water, right up to her neck. At first, she thought it was the sea, but then she saw it was the pool of her own tears.
“Oh, why did I cry so much?” said Alice. She swam around and looked for a way out, but the pool was very big. Just then she saw an animal in the water near her. It looked like a large animal to Alice, but it was only a mouse.
“Shall I speak to it?” thought Alice. “Everything is very strange here, so perhaps a mouse can speak.”
Then she began, “Oh, mouse, do you know the way out of this pool? I am very tired of swimming.”
But the mouse looked at her with its little eyes and said nothing.
“Perhaps it doesn’t understand English,” thought Alice. “Perhaps it’s a French mouse.” So she began again, and said in French, “Where is my cat?” (This was first sentence in her French book.)
The mouse jumped half out of the water and looked at her angrily.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” cried Alice quickly. “Of course, you don’ like cats, do you?”
“No. I don’t like cats,” the mouse replied.
