Before arriving in China, I had read various books relating to China, and my fascination were increasing.
Therefore, when I arrived, I couldn’t have been more excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. The food, the landmarks, the big cities and everyday life — I couldn’t wait to explore.
Yet despite my passion, learning Chinese hadn’t even entered my mind. This wasn’t laziness, but rather fear at the thought of trying to learn what is regarded as the most difficult language in the world. Besides this, I was living in Shanghai, an international city, with many people speaking English as a second language — I decided English would be enough.
However, after a year in China I began to observe that while many foreigners did not speak Chinese, there were plenty who did. Perhaps it was achievable after all? In addition, I felt uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could speak English and yet I couldn’t even speak the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier.
Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native Chinese speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me, I have also not found it too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed. I can’t always understand what’s been said.
My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it’s not only achievable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a fascinating country. So, to all my non-Chinese friends I say this, take up the challenge and take the leap of faith.
    24. Why didn’t the author learn Chinese when he arrived in China in 2017?
    A. He showed no passion for China. B. He was unwilling to make the effort.
    C. He avoided learning a second language. D. He avoided doing something difficult.
    25. What caused the author to learn Chinese?
    A. His regret about starting learning late. B. Support from many friends around him.
    C. Eagerness to take up the challenge. D. A thirst to prove his gift for language.
    26. What does the underlined word “insurmountable” in the 5th paragraph mean?
    A. Valueless. B. Difficult. C. Unnecessary. D. Unacceptable.
    27. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
    A. Love breaks down difficulties. B. Hard work pays off.
    C. Hard work is the key to success. D. Bravery opens up a new world.
    C
When put to tests, bees have long proved that they’ve got a lot more to offer than pollinating (授粉), making honey and being faithful to a queen. The hard-working insects can change their behavior when things seem difficult, and now some scientists find there is evidence that they also like to play.
Scientists from Queen Mary University of London performed an experiment, in which they set up a container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the bees could choose to pass through an area with some small wooden balls. Over 18 days, the scientists watched as the bees “went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, despite no apparent incentive (刺激) to do so.” Earlier studies have shown that the black and yellow bugs are willing to learn new tricks in exchange for food or other rewards. In this case, to remove the outer factors, scientists made sure the bees had adapted to their new home and that their environment was stress-free.
The finding suggests that like humans, insects also play with objects for fun. Also similar to people, younger bees seem to be more playful than adult bees. “This research provides strong evidence that insect minds are far more complex(复杂的) than we imagine. There are lots of animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals (哺乳动物) and birds,” said Lars Chittka, a professor of sensory and behavioral ecology at Queen Mary University of London, who led the study.
The study’s first author, Samadi Galpay, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University of London, notes that it is more evident that bees may be able to experience feelings. “They may actually experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger animals do. This finding has effects on our understanding of the sense and happiness of insects, which, therefore, encourages us to respect and protect wildlife on Earth ever more,” she says. 28. What is the new finding about bees?
    A. They are skilled at rolling balls. B. They are faithful to the queen.
    C. They are adaptable to changes. D. They are fond of having fun.
    29. How did scientists remove outer influences in the experiment?
    A. By teaching bees new tricks. B. By making bees feel at home.
    C. By rewarding bees with food. D. By building new homes for bees.
    30. What are Lars Chittka’s words mainly about?
    A. The forms of bees’ play. B. The purpose of mammals’ enjoyment.
    C. The examples of mammals’ play. D. The complexity of bees’ minds.
31.What does Samadi Galpay say about the study result?
    A. It contributes to wildlife protection on Earth.
    B. It shows reasons for bees’ positive feelings.
    C. It drives research on animals’ emotional state.
    D. Itsupports previous understanding of insects.
    D
“You’re so smart!” This encouraging response to children’s math performance is commonly heard. Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math achievement over time.
Parents who make comments connecting their children’s performance with personal qualities like IQ are using what’s referred to as person responses. In contrast, parents who connect their children’s actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.
For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to their children’s math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were divided into two groups across a year to measure their math achievement.
The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give process responses focused on their children’s strategy use and efforts rather than their IQ or other personal qualities. In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can’t be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations for their children give both responses. While responses focused on strategy and efforts are not related to any achievement results, children who receive more responses about their personal qualities — especially, related to failure — are more likely to avoid harder math problems, show higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.
Because person responses mean poor math change in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of responses at home. Another recommendation for parents is to think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them to respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to encourage children.
    32. Which of the following is an example of process response?
    A. What works well for your study? B. Running is in your DNA.
    C. You are a lucky dog. D. Why are you such a math talent?
    33. What can be learned from the study results?
    A. Parents prefer to give more process responses.
    B. Person responses can discourage children from learning math.
    C. Process responses help with children’s math achievement.
    D. Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety.
    34. What do researchers advise parents to do?
    A. Ignore children’s math problems. B. Protect their own beliefs.
    C. Stress children’s performance. D. Limit person responses.
    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. The Strategy Children Use to Learn Math Helps
    B. Responses to improve Children’s Math Performance
    C. The Way Parents Talk to Children on Math Matters
    D. Suggestions for Parents to Teach Their Children Math

Kids' Health: Four Steps for Fighting Stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. 36 Some ways of dealing with stress — like screaming or hitting someone—don't solve(解决) much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
    Get support.
When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. 37 They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
Don't take it out on yourself.
Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself. 38
    Try to solve the problem.
After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business. 39 Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
    Be positive.
Most stress is temporary (暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it. These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster. 40
    A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
    B. Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.
    C. Different people feel stress in different ways.
    D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
    E. You need to figure out what the problem is.
    F. And don't forget about your friends.
    G. Then, find a way to calm down.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was one of those days when nothing seemed to go right. I dragged myself out of the bed and all of the things began early. I dropped my two older children at school with relief and unwillingly headed to the supermarket to buy food with my youngest. I wasn't feeling any sense of appreciation for my comfortable home or lovely family.
I was getting mad with this early day, and my son, just four years old at that time, was being difficult. I raced around to pick the items, while trying to control my naughty child whose behavior had now added to my complete displeasure. Yes, I was that mother, threatening, and roaring at a small child.
We eventually made it to the checkout and stood in the queue waiting for our turn. After a short time, I noticed that someone had joined the line behind us. I turned and saw an old man. He wore a dirty overcoat. His shoes were worn out. In his hands he just carried a small box of long-life milk. I had too many groceries. I asked him if he'd like to go ahead of me. It wasn't an act of kindness on my part. Perhaps I just wanted him gone. After all, his presence made me uncomfortable. In the same way, I felt uncomfortable and avoided my eyes when passing a homeless person.
He didn't reply to me as if I had said nothing to him. I looked at him and repeated my words. This time, I was sure that he had heard what I said.
    注意:1、续写词数应为 150 左右。2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    He looked surprised and uncertain.

I had to find him and gave back the change.

He looked surprised and uncertain. He asked with hesitation, “Madam, are you sure?” “Sure!” I confirmed, nodding at him unwillingly. He went ahead slowly, paid for the milk, and took his change. Then, to my amazement, he turned to my child and pressed the change into his hand. Without any more words, he turned around and before I realized it, he had already disappeared into the crowds. At the moment, I found myself filled with great guilt but greatly moved. I quickly paid all my groceries, rushed out with my son and looked around anxiously, hoping that I could spot him. There was only one thing I wanted to do.
I had to find him and gave back the change. Fortunately, the moment we were out of the supermarket, an old man with a dirty overcoat and sockless ankles caught my attention. It was him! I ran to him, pressing the change back into his hand together with a bag of bread. I also expressed my gratitude sincerely. This time, I no longer felt uncomfortable but warm instead. We exchanged glances and both smiled. The light in his eyes reminded me how lucky I was and how grateful I should be, not only for the comfortable home but also my lovely family. With the gentle breeze softly kissing my face, I went home with my now lovely child gratefully.

M: Good morning. I have an interview scheduled with Mr. Black for 2 o’clock. It’s for an article I’m writing for next week’s edition of The Addington Chronicle.
W: Oh, yes. That means you’re Mr. Woods. I actually gave you a call last evening.
    M: Oh, really? I didn’t notice that.
W: That’s all right. I called to say that Mr. Black had to cancel the interview. He had to attend an urgent board meeting at our main office in Dallas.
M: Really? That’s too bad. Could I possibly reschedule?
W: Certainly. He’ll be back tomorrow night. Would the following day — that’s Thursday at 10 a.m. be OK with you?
    M: That’s great.
    Text 8
    W: Is Yon Mi OK?
M: I don’t know. She didn’t come to lunch, did she? She might be homesick.
W: It could be the time of year. I feel kind of homesick too.
M: I have the same feeling. I miss the festival at Grandmother’s in Nigeria at this time. It’s a big party with dancing and singing.
    W: Wow, what’s it called?
    M: The New Yam Festival.
W: Back home at this time of year, we celebrate “The Day of the Dead”.
M: The dead? It’s like Halloween in the United States, isn’t it?
W: Yes and no. In Mexico, we honor our dead ancestors on this day.
M: How interesting! You should give a presentation to the class about that.
W: I have a better idea. Yon Mi might like it, too. We could have an International Fall Festival!
    Text 9
M: Good morning. How can I help you?
W: Could you help us to find a hotel in London, please?
M: Yes, of course. Would you like a hotel in the city center?
    W: Yes, if possible.
M: OK, how about the Hotel Stella? They’ve got some rooms free.
W: Is it near an underground station?
M: Yes, it is. It’s about five minutes’ walk from Marble Arch station. And it’s very close to Hyde
Park. It’s one of the nicest hotels in London.
W: Great. I’d like a double room for three nights. And can you check the price?
M: Yes, sure. I’m afraid hotels in London are really expensive but of course they are comfortable. A lot of people think that London’s the most expensive city for tourists in the world.
W: Yes, last year we stayed two nights in a hotel that cost over £200 a night!
M: Right, I’ve booked it for you, £220 a night. When you come out of the underground station, go along Edgware Road for about 400 meters and it’s on the right, opposite a cinema.
    W: Brilliant. Thanks very much.
    Text 10
M: Hello, Mr. Collins. This is Chandler. I’m calling to apply to be a volunteer in the Winter Olympics. My teacher Mr. White, whom you know, read the advertisement on the Internet. He advised me to give you a call. I am a student of international politics in Granada. I’m a good communicator and speak several languages. My native language is Spanish. I know English to B2 level and B1 French. It has always been my dream to attend and help in the Winter Olympics. Every four years I watch this amazing event. I believe that sport brings people together and the Olympics are very important. Volunteers are a necessary part of the Olympics. I’m sure that I can make a valuable contribution. As someone very interested in sport, I believe that I’m in an excellent position to help athletes and visitors with any problems they have. I’m a skier and snowboarder and I know better what they want. I think that’s the most needed. I have never been a volunteer before but I love new challenges. I’m flexible and ready to take on any tasks. By the way, I sent you an email with my personal information and some of my sports experiences for your reference. Thank you for considering my application. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
