I had my first luck when my uncle was visiting from Britain. We were talking about my plans for further study. I was interested in biology research, but there weren't many opportunities in Slovenia Surprisingly, my uncle encouraged me to try international studies, and even offered me my cousin's room. It was the lucky break I needed. Later. I applied for a university near my uncle's. When I was accepted. I felt excited. I was also stressed about studying abroad and the cost. To save up. I got a part-time job, through which I could only cover one-third of the expense. Luckily, a prize from school contributed the rest.
Once I reached Britain, between culture shock and my university program. I worked part-time. By working and reducing unnecessary costs. I could support myself, share the household expenses with my uncle's family, and save for my education.
I made little progress in the lab after five months. One evening. I mistakenly removed all the useful experiment data. I broke into tears, and spent the whole night playing video games-a much-needed break after months of non-stop work. But I didn't give up. Two weeks later, my project began to produce results.
After being rejected several times in full-time job hunting. I had a chance to meet with Professor Brown I hardly remembered from two lectures he had given. I was analyzing my data when he mentioned he was looking for an assistant and encouraged me to apply. I didn't think I stood a chance, but I figured I had nothing to lose. To my surprise, the professor who valued my efforts and ability offered me the job. I went on to complete my study, and I was excited about the research opportunities that were available to me.

Listening to birds sing or watching them fly is more than just entertaining. Being around birds offers benefits for emotional well-being, a new study finds.
Researchers used a phone app to collect information on how this specific nature exposure could be good for mental wellness.
“Most previous studies have looked at the benefits of nature as a whole,” says lead author Ryan Hammoud, a research assistant at King’s College London. “We chose to focus on birdlife to try and understand which specific characteristics of nature benefit mental health. None of the previous studies had investigated this in real-time and real-world contexts.
For their experiments, researchers used the Urban Mind app to follow 1,292 people who completed nearly 27,000 assessments. Participants were from the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the United States. Three times each day, the app asked users whether they could hear or see birds. They were asked to answer follow-up questions on their mental state at the time, so researchers could see if there was a connection and how long it lasted.
Mental well-being was measured with questions about whether they were feeling confident, relaxed, happy, for example, or more negative feelings such as whether they felt anxious, stressed, or lonely.
The study collected data on people who have mental health conditions and those without. They discovered that bird activity is linked to improvements in emotional health in those who don’t have mental health concerns, as well as those who have been diagnosed with depression. They discovered that the effects were still observed in the following assessment which was up to eight hours later.
This exciting research shows just how much the sight and the sound of birdsong lift the spirits. It captures evidence that our senses are stimulated by birdsong, which is a precious part of nature that should be experienced.
28. In what way is the research different from previous ones?
A. It discovered the entertaining part of birds.
B. It looks at humans as a valuable part of nature.
C. It looks at the benefits of a specific aspect of nature.
D. It discovered the contributing factors to emotional health.
29. Why did Urban Mind app ask the participants questions?
A. To cheer up the participants.
B. To provide real-time guidance.
C. To record the locations of birds.
D. To collect data for the research.
30. What can be learned about the effect birds have on the participants?
A. It lasts for hours.
B. It’s still uncertain.
C. It depends on health conditions.
D. It’s linked to where the birds are seen.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Nature Exposure Is Good for Mental Wellness
B.Seeing or Hearing Birds Is Good for Well-being
C. Scientists Are Researching into Specific Characteristics of Nature
D. A Phone App Is Helping Collect Data in Real-world Experiments

Technology has changed the ways in which we communicate with each other. For many people, the primary form of communicating these days is via instant messaging. When you run out of space or ideas, you just hit the send button or tum it off. There are no silences between the words, literally or figuratively (比喻地).
In real life, getting along with another person takes effort and energy. There are moments when neither person has anything to say. Silence can feel awkward. So too, emotions can arise in real life that are difficult. There are moments when things can get painful with another person. Misunderstandings happen, hard truths are revealed, and feelings can get hurt.
A trend has started to pop up. When difficulty or conflict arises within a relationship we are simply dropping out of it rather than facing the issue. I hear of this more often in my practice and notice it more in my own life. We come and go, in and out of each other’s lives with remarkable ease, as if relationships are not really worth investing in or working for any longer. It makes me wonder if we are simply losing the ability to deal with the messy and uncomfortable parts of life. The result is that we are left with a lot of relationships but not much in the way of nourishing relationships. We have it easy, but we don’t have it real.
When we run into conflict with others, the reason we are willing to address the conflict is that we want the relationship and we care about it. Discomfort, awkwardness and challenges are an unavoidable part of being in a relationship with others. We have to remind ourselves that we can wade (涉水) through that messy river to get to the other side where the relationship can be restored. In psychology, we call this process repair. And the relationship that is formed after dealing with the conflict together is actually stronger than if the conflict had not happened.
We will never end up anywhere deeply satisfying by avoiding challenges. Each moment that we are willing to be uncomfortable in a relationship, to live in and through the messiness, is a drop of gold in the relationship itself. The investment in the hard stuff is finally what makes the relationship worth investing in. The willingness to be uncomfortable with something and the value of that something are part of the same circle.
32. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. Technology has brought people closer.
B. True friends are not embarrassed by silence.
C. Online communication creates a lot of misunderstandings.
D. More challenges arise in real-life interpersonal relationships.
33. What is the author’s attitude towards the trend mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Reserved. D. Unclear.
34. What does the author suggest people do?
A. Step back and avoid conflict. B. Pay more attention to themselves.
C. Try to fix the relationship. D. Learn to identify unhealthy relationships.
35. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To describe a growing trend.
B. To stress the importance of handling conflict.
C. To guide people into meaningful relationships.
D. To show the influence of the Internet on relationships.

Grandpa’s Old Chair
It was the annual cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Just then, John’s mom noticed an old chair that was faded and worn. That chair was for John’s grandpa, who had lived with them since John’s grandma had died.
“John, come and help me.” John’s mom sprang to her feet. “We’ll take the chair to the curb (路边). The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”
As they attempted to move the chair, John’s grandpa made his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried to stop them. “No!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“But it’s so old...” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”
“No,” he persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked.
“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” Grandpa’s voice broke, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s sadness seemed to grow as he recalled that fateful day.
“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “This is not just any old chair. It is more like a friend.”
“Yes,” he nodded. “We’ve gone through a lot together.”
However, that night, when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s mom and dad carried the chair outside. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered Grandpa’s chair in a blanket of white.

66.Dear Li Lei,
I have got your letter. And I am very glad that you believe in me and ask me for help. I have known you have some difficulty in learning maths because you can not adapt to what your maths teacher teaches and you can’t catch up with others in your class. Don’t worry about it. I think the following may be of help to you.
Firstly, you’d better listen to the teacher carefully in class. You can ask your maths teacher to explain what you can not understand after class. Secondly, confidence is very important. You should be confident and have faith in yourself. Finally, it is a good way for you to communicate with your classmates and get some advice on maths. Just as a saying goes, “Nothing is difficult if you put your heart into it”. I hope you will make progress in it.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

Possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, John was woken by the garbage truck pulling up to the house. He run downstairs and saw his grandpa looking outside through the window, tears rolling down his cheeks. The chair stood at the curb on the street, covered in snow. “Wait! Don’t take that chair,” he shouted. John then ran back inside and said, “Mom, you can’t throw out grandpa’s chair. It has been with him for decades and is like a loyal friend that has witnessed the most important moments in his life!”
Paragraph 2:
Hearing this, John’s mom looked at his grandpa and slowly walked towards him. She handed grandpa a tissue and said, “I’m sorry… I just didn’t realize how much it meant to you. John and I will bring your chair back.” They took the chair back inside. They placed it next to the fireplace so it could dry. John’s mom stepped back, as if seeing the chair for the very first time. “Mm... I guess it does give the room a certain touch of character,” she mused. John and his grandpa wholeheartedly agreed that the living room would be rather dull without this old chair.
