A NASA-funded study used satellite t search fr penguin pps (粪便) in Antarctica: funny at first sight thugh, it resulted in unique insights n the Adelie penguin’s diet and its future as the climate changes. The findings published recently unlcked the secrets abut the species that can prvide an early-warning f threats t Antarctica’s delicate ecsystem.
Researchers frm Stny Brk University used satellite images t see if the Adelie penguin’s diet has been changing in respnse t Antarctica’s changing climate. Adelie penguin ppulatin has drpped greatly in sme areas even as the glbal ppulatin increases. The satellite images cannt shw the penguins individually, but their presence can be detected by the stain (污渍) left n the ice by their waste, called guan.
Male and female penguins take turns incubating (孵化) in the nest. The guan builds up in the same areas ccupied by the nests. Heather Lynch, assciate prfessr at Stny Brk, alng with his team, used the area f the clny as defined by the guan stain t wrk back t the number f pairs. A glbal survey fr Adelie penguins turned up 3.8 millin breeding pairs. Als, the satellite data can detect the clr f the penguin guan, ranging frm white t pink t dark red. White guan is frm eating mstly fish; pink and red wuld be frm eating mstly krill (磷虾). The team fund that while the Adelie penguin’s diet did shw changes frm year t year, n cnsistent pattern was bvius.
“This was a big surprise, since the abundance and distributin f Adelie penguins has changed dramatically ver the last 40 years and scientists had assumed that a change in diet might have played a rle,” said Casey Yung flesh, a graduate student frm the university. Hwever, cntinued changes in the physical envirnment and a grwing krill fishery in the regin are likely t have an influence n penguin prey (猎物) and penguin ppulatin itself. “Tls like this will be imprtant fr the management f the Antarctic ecsystem, which is ften cnsidered amng the mst primitive areas in the wrld,” said Yung flesh.
8. What cncerned scientists mst accrding t paragraph 1?
A. The climate change.B. The Adelie penguin’s diet.
C. The Antarctica’s ecsystem.D. The secret f penguin pps.
9. Hw did scientists carry ut the study?
A. By ding experiments.B. By cnducting surveys.
C. By making bservatins.D. By cllecting dcuments.
10. Which f the fllwing wuld Lynch agree with?
A. The Adelie penguin ppulatin was 3.8 millin wrldwide.
B. Guan clrs reflected the health cnditin f the penguin.
C. The Adelie penguin’s diet stayed the same mst f the time.
D. Adelie penguin waste helped estimate the penguin ppulatin.
11. What did Yung flesh’s wrds suggest?
A. Mre Adelie penguins have appeared ver the last 40 years.
B. There was nt an bvius changing pattern f penguin’s diet.
C. Diet changes didn’t actually affect penguin ppulatin as assumed.
D. Fishery was imprtant fr the management f the Antarctic ecsystem.

It happens t all f us. Yu’re struggling with a prblem that feels unslvable and then smewhere between shamp and cnditiner, yu find the answer in the shwer. Fr sme reasn, when we step·away frm an issue, and especially when we’re ding smething like shwering, we can find a creative slutin. Researchers at the University f Virginia call it the “shwer effect”.

Participants in the study weren’t actually shwering—that’s unsuitable fr a research study. Instead, participants either saw a vide that was cnsidered bring—tw men flding laundry—r a vide f the famus scene in When Harry Met Sally..., which was cnsidered mildly stimulating. After that, participants had 45 secnds befre researchers asked them t describe hw they wuld pssibly use a brick r a nail. Researchers then examined bth the number f ideas generated and the riginality f thse ideas. They fund that the participants wh watched the mildly stimulating vide came up with mre creative slutins.
“My students can learn a thing r tw frm the research which highlights the imprtance f stepping away frm a prblem t slve it,” says Alice Flaherty, a neurlgist at Massachusetts General Hspital. “Sme f them are s dedicated that they wn’t get up frm their desks until they have a creative idea, which is cunterprductive because they dn't ever let their brains step back and take a rest.”
But Flaherty als states that researchers need t cntrl the factr f physical arusal(唤起)during their study. That’s because an activity which increases yur heart rate might make yu think yu have the best idea. “There must be ther reasns t explain this phenmenn. And while shwering might prmte creativity,” she says, “it might nt be fr the reasns they state.”.
12. Accrding t the recent study, in which way can we inspire ur creativity?
A. By letting ur mind cmpletely wander.
B. By ding a mildly stimulating activity.
C. By fully fcusing n a certain prblem.
D. By being engaged in things that interest us.
13. What can we knw abut the participants in the study?
A. They rle-played a famus mvie scene.
B. They watched a vide while flding laundry.
C. They imagined taking a shwer fr 45 secnds.
D. They ffered creative uses f sme cmmn bjects.
14. What des the underlined wrd “cunterprductive” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Difficult t stick t.
B. Wrthwhile but unhealthy.
C. Time-cnsuming but helpful.
D. Oppsite t the desired effect.
15. What's the best title fr the text?
A.Why D We Need t Be Creative?
B. What Is the Functin f Daily Activities?
C. Why D We Get Our Best Ideas in the Shwer?
D. Hw Des Our Brain Respnd t a Tricky Prblem?
