A map on social media shows “languages where the word for ‘mother/mom’ takes an m-sound”. Scores of countries are shaded red.

The word mama does not sound like a mother, but it does show one feature of language: the fact that some sounds are more widespread than others around the world. A few consonants (辅音), such as b, m, p, t, d and k, show up far more frequently, in nearly every spoken language in the world. That is almost certainly because they are easy to make.

A baby vocalising (发声) will, at first, make a sound like “ah”, which requires little in the way of control over the mouth. If they briefly close their mouth and continue vocalising, air will come out of their nose, thus making the m-sound that is used in “mother” around the world.

Though the “mamas” bear the most obvious similarity, the “papas” have striking commonalities (共性), too. Babies can easily stop their breath when they close their lips. This produces a b-or a p-sound. It is surely for this reason that so many names for “father” use these consonants: papa in English, abb in Arabic and baba in Chinese. T- and d-sounds are similarly basic, involving a simple press of the tongue against the teeth: hence daddy, tatay (Tagalog) or tayta (Quechua).

Father and mother are, therefore, an oddity. F-is not especially easy to make; th-sounds are even harder. English, Greek and Spanish are unusual in having them, and French-, German- and Italian-speakers struggle very much with them, often using related consonants instead. Children may struggle with th-sounds when they are five, or older still in many cases.

This helps solve the mystery of why, despite parents being formally known as “mother” and “father”, so few children call them that. Few parents will insist on children using the proper term to refer to them, especially if it means waiting until a child is seven and can pronounce it.

    4. What do words for “mother” in many languages have in common?

    A. They include the “ah” sound. B. They are the first words of babies.

    C. They have the easy-to-make m-sound. D. They require a wide-open mouth to say.

    5. Which body parts do babies need to employ to say the Quechua word for “father”?

    A. Their nose and teeth. B. Their mouth and nose.

    C. Their tongue and teeth. D. Their lips and tongue.

    6. For whom are th-sounds most difficult to pronounce?

    A. The Greeks. B. The English. C. The Spanish. D. The French.

    7. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. The universal mama B. The most widespread sounds

    C. The languages of the world D. The vocalisation of consonants

    C

Standing outside my hospital the other day, I was struck by a sight. In fact, it’s a sight we’ve all seen countless times: obese (肥胖的) nurses standing around outside a hospital. It is estimated that one in four nurses is obese, with nearly two-thirds being overweight.

While some have argued that obese nurses may be less productive and take more time off sick, this isn’t my concern at all. I’m just worried about the example they set to others. Yes, of course, nurses and doctors struggle with having a healthy lifestyle like everyone else. But if they can’t stick to the basic principles of maintaining a healthy lifestyle that they are promoting themselves, then in my opinion they have no business being on the front line. No patient is going to take them seriously unless they can demonstrate that they at least try to practise what they promote.

It’s a serious professional failing, because it sends the disastrous message of “do as I say not as I do”, which is never going to result in someone changing their ways. You wouldn’t take advice about reducing your drinking from an alcoholic, would you? So why should you be expected to listen to an overweight healthcare professional who is telling you to lose a few pounds?

Of course, there are lots of instances when a doctor or nurse’s personal struggles can really help. For example, I used to smoke and I find this actually helps me because I can relate to patients — I know their struggles, I know their concerns and I know the things they say to themselves to avoid quitting. Knowing that I used to smoke helps me come across as more human to my patients — I’ve done silly things but I’ve changed and so can they.

Similarly, a nurse who was previously obese but has now lost weight could be a real motivation for patients. But until they have lost weight and can demonstrate that they practise what they promote, they risk alienating (使疏远) the very patients they are charged with helping.

    8. What worries the author concerning obese nurses?

    A. They will have difficulty getting along with patients.

    B. They will be unlikely to take patients seriously.

    C. They will fail to play their role in health promotion.

    D. They will be incompetent at their job on the front line.

    9. What is the author’s attitude to “do as I say not as I do”?

    A. Tolerant. B. Contradictory. C. Uncaring. D. Disapproving.

    10. In what way is the author’s experience of quitting smoking helpful?

    A. He understands smokers better.

    B. He manages to maintain a healthier lifestyle.

    C. He has become brave in the face of struggles.

    D. He sets a good example to his workmates.

    11. What can we infer about the author?

    A. He is an alcoholic. B. He is a doctor.

    C. He is overweight. D. He is impatient.

    D

This month, the Internet was flooded with surprisingly elegant digital art portraits (肖像), thanks to the work of the latest artificial intelligence-assisted application to become popular. Users uploaded their photographs to the app and thenfor a small feeit used AI to transform their profile pictures into a magical soldier princess version, in no time at all.

Anyone can now produce professional-looking images made to their desires, without having any training in art or design themselves. If that sounds great to you , you might not be one of the millions of humans whose livelihoods depend on being able to exchange those skills for money.

Those working in the more cognitive (认知的) creative industries have long felt that they had nothing to fear from automation. After all, how could a computer ever recreate the aura (气质) of a masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, or possess the unique skill set required to think up a convincing visual marketing campaign for a luxury brand?

Early images generated with these tools were full of glitches that marked them out as machine-made. But as the results have become more convincing, creatives have grown more concerned. On the front line of this debate are temporary workers such as graphic artists and commercial illustrators.

For those watching closely, the visual outputs of these widely available AI tools are already getting repetitive, and even the untrained eyes will learn soon to recognize the hand of the machine. Some of the most interesting and conceptually rich works being made with AI are still coming from artists such as Mario Klingemann and Anna Ridler, who are making their own training data sets, and organizing the machine outputs in imaginative ways.

The kind of artificial intelligence we might imagine replacing artists - an entirely autonomous creative robot capable of human-like imagination and expression - does not yet exist, but it is coming. And as AI becomes more common , artists, illustrators and designers will ultimately be set apart not by it, but by how, they use the technology.

    12. Why does the author mention the latest app in Paragraph 1?

    A. To explain what it is. B. To stress its importance.

    C. To encourage people to use it. D. To introduce the topic of the passage.

    13. What do the creatives think of the development of AI tools?

    A. They think little of the ability of AI tools.

    B. They don’t fear the competition from AI tools at all.

    C. They feel pleased about the appearance of such AI tools.

    D. They are worried that AI tools will threaten their living.

    14. What does the underlined word “glitches” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. Smooth lines. B. Small errors. C. Distinct highlights. D. Special watermarks.

    15. Which statement will the author probably agree with?

    A. The robots that can be creative like humans will surely appear.

    B. It’s too early to tell if the robots will be creative like humans.

    C. Technology will get rid of the creative jobs.

    D. Artists will create excellent works only with the help of AI tools.

For the past 17 years, Cathy had been living in the shadows. Because of some birth problems, her bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.

In her hometown a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.

Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.

Cathy had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to her music teacher Mrs. Owens to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Cathy’s body and said, “Child, you are just not suitable. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”

Without singing a single note, Cathy was sent back through the door of the music classroom. Hurt and upsetshe decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.

This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Cathy and suggested that she have a try.

Cathy didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Cathy struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, “Cathy, you’re next.” Kind of nervous as she was, Cathy did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Cathy company. When Cathy finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on notice board the next day.

Cathy couldn’t sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.

Finally, the day for the performance came. Cathy’s eyes danced with excitement as she stepped on to the stage. Standing still, she heard noises among the crowd. Obviously not cheers! Cathy felt nervous again and even her legs began trembling. At that moment, her eyes parked on Mr. Butler at the corner. He nodded and exchanged a determined glance with her, which timely put her heart back in place. With the music rising, Cathy began her singing. Her sweet voice poured and the audience fell into an abrupt silence. When she finished, the auditorium erupted into a sea of cheers. Cathy White in tears, with so many birth problems in her body, became the shiniest star!
