A little boy has written and illustrated(加插图于) a storybook himself to help raise money to buy a new wheelchair. Alfie Dormand began writing his book The Monkeys That Stole A Bus after being inspired by a day out at Paignton Zoo. He even illustrated the book himself u-sing a computer program to create colourful drawings to illustrate his imaginative tale.
Through sales of his storybook on the Internet and donation through his Just Giving page, Alfie has raised over £1,000 towards the costs of the new electric wheelchair, which would give him greater independence than his current manual(手动的) wheelchair. He has a disease called L1 syndrome and a related condition known as Hydrocephalus(脑积水), both of which affect his ability to move.
His mum Michelle Dortmund said, "We hired an electric wheelchair three years ago when we went to Paignton Zoo and he loved it. Along the rocky Algerian coast, just east of where Mount Chenoua slides into the Mediterranean, has stood Tipasa for more than 2,500 years, It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in North Africa.
Tipasa fell into ruin in the sixth century. Both its main group of buildings on the coast and an inland monumental tomb(陵墓) surrounded by the olive trees were all forgotten. Most of the ancient city, in fact, remains buried under the ground. For the last few decades, however, what's left of Tipasa's past has been increasingly surrounded on three sides by the expanding modern town of Tipasa. And to the north, the waves lap ever closer.
"What's special about Tipasa, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site since 1982, is its unique landscape, the shared presence of history and archaeology, culture, nature and architecture, It's the spirit of the place," said Lynda, who has studied Tipasa and the ongoing challenges from both rapid urbanization(城市化) and inadequate(不足的) site management.
Now, Tipasa is entering a new period, perhaps its last: It's become a symbol of an entire continent's heritage in great danger. In a recent Nature Climate Change paper, a team reported the results: How sea level rise is affecting nearly 300 World Heritage Sites around Africa's roughly 20,000 miles of coastline. About 20 percent of the sites examined, including Tipasa, are already at high risk from flooding and erosion(侵蚀). By 2050 that figure is expected to more than three times.
The site's 21st-century problems have only increased in the last two decades. UNESCO has repeatedly threatened to strip the site of World Heritage status. As recently as 2021, the organization noted a series of problems at Tipasa, such as modern building, including a pro-posed port, that threatened the site's completeness.
8、What can we infer about Tipasa?
A.It was built in 2,500 BCE.
B.It is the most important archaeological site in Africa.
C.It is the most famous tourist attraction in North Africa.
D.It suffered from complete damage in the sixth century.
9、What do Lynda's words in paragraph 3 show?
A.Tipasa has its unique characteristics.
B.Tipasa is experiencing quick development,
C.Tipasa has been a World Heritage Site since 1990s.
D.Tipasa has paid much attention to its management.
10、What puts Tipasa in a high-risk situation?
A.The overdevelopment of the sea. B.The tourism.
C.The flood. D.The pollution.
11、What does the underlined word "strip" in the last paragraph mean?
A.Increase. B.Gather. C.Figure. D.Remove.
3D printing is taking home construction(建筑) to new heights, A giant printer is building what designers say is the first 3D-printed two-story house in the US.
"While construction 3D printing has been around for over ten years, the technology has only started to break ground in the US homebuilding market over the last couple of years," said Lok, the architectural designer for the project. Several 3D-printed homes have already been built or are currently in the works across a handful of states.
Lok, who cofounded X,a design company, said, "My team aims to eventually scale up(扩大) the designs to be able to efficiently 3D print multifamily homes." With the Houston home, the team is pushing the industrial printer to its limits to understand how it can stream-line(使效率更高) the technology, in the search of quickly building cost-effective and well-designed homes.
"In the future, it has to be fast, simple design in order to compete with other building technologies," said Zerbe, the head of structural engineering. "We are not trying to beat the clock."
"It's a case study. We're learning the abilities of the machine, learning the reaction of the material under different weather conditions. We're learning how to optimize(优化) the speed of printing. When this project is completed, we should have a very good idea of how to proceed in the future," he added.
On the design side, Lok sees opportunity to one day offer customized features at a mass scale, without excessive labor costs. "The printer doesn't care if you print the same chair 100 times or you print 100 different chairs," she said. "This opens up the possibility of how we can actually offer customized design for the users, whether it's a single-family house or whether it's a multifamily building or apartment."
12、What can we learn about 3D printing?
A.It is applied to two fields in the US.
B.It is widely used in homebuilding market.
C.It has been applied to building in a few states.
D.It has been used in construction for less than ten years.
13、What is the purpose of Lok and her team?
A.To satisfy any customer's need.
B.To increase the size of their designs.
C.To use the technology in other fields.
D.To understand what the technology can do.
14、Why does the author quote Zerbe's words?
A.To show his advantages.
B.To state the purpose of the study.
C.To describe the process of the study.
D.To tell others how the technology works.
15、Which can be the best title for the text?

六、读后续写

I was looking forward to my son Scott's visit and our morning trip to the Collingwood Flea Market. It was a typical November day, cold in the shade and warm in the sun. A perfect day for outdoor shopping.
We walked up and down looking at the many things, but nothing called out to me. After an hour of walking with the wind blowing in the air, we decided to call it quits and go home for lunch.
On our way, I was rubbing my cold hands together when I noticed that my engagement(订婚) ring was missing. When I informed Scott of the missing ring he couldn’t believe it either. We searched the car and I searched my clothes, too. No ring! It must have fallen off my finger in the cold.
We headed back to the flea market and parked in the same spot as before. We checked that area, and then began walking up and down the maze(迷宫) of tables while looking at the ground. Leaves blew in the wind and people were everywhere. Hundreds of feet passed by and I began getting lightheaded as I intently looked at the ground. I was afraid of the thought of someone finding my ring and wearing it home, not knowing the emotional value and its history. It was an expensive engagement ring my now dead partner had given me twenty years earlier. I had never lost or misplaced it in all that time...until now.
We gave up, cold and hungry. I was angry at myself for having lost the ring. We drove home as I tried to hold back my tears.
After lunch, which I had no appetite for, we decided to return to the flea market. If we were going to find it, it was now or never. Time was of the importance. And so, for the third time we parked the car in the same spot. Because it was later in the day, most of the vendors(摊贩) had packed up and left.

解析:①考查固定短语。句意:然而,在现阶段,它们的精力和财力往往有限,别无选择,只能养一只宠物或什么都不养。have no choice but to do sth“除了做某事,别无选择”为固定短语。故填but。
②考查定语从句。句意:对于生活在城市的人来说,他们可能更倾向于养猫。先行词为people,在定语从句中作主语,关系代词为who或者that。故填who/that。
故填has seen。

33、答案:
My Greatest Happiness
I love spending time with my family because it brings us closer together. I find I develop greater love for them as the years pass, despite our differences or disagreements. I can always depend upon them in times of difficulty. I love family dinners, which have always been the greatest happiness in my life. I love how everyone gets together and we talk over the meal. The conversation doesn't have to be relevantly important; mostly we talk about our day and each other. Lots of laughter is involved and everyone feels loved and included. That's what makes us so happy. Family is constant, and so is my happiness.
34、答案:
We went to the manager's office and told him my sad story. I left my name and phone number hoping that someone would find the ring and turn it in. After that, I took a deep breath and we set out on our mission. It was much warmer and not as windy. I took the left side of the paths and Scott the right. We walked and walked and walked. There was broken glass that shone like a diamond ring. There were shiny soda can tabs that caught our eye. There were silver coins.
Finally, we reached the far end of the flea market. There were a number of empty tables because the vendors had already packed up and left. And there, under one of those tables, I spotted a shiny little circle in the dirt. I shouted to Scott that I had found the ring! He said it was unbelievable! Yes, it was truly a miracle. Three hours after I lost it, with hundreds of people walking by, my ring waited for the person meant to find it... me!
