Appliances
Approved appliances for use in students’ rooms include: clocks, computers, fans, televisions, lamps and single cup coffee makers without a stay-on heating element.
Students may use the following appliances with care: hair dryers, irons and heating pads.
These appliances may not be used at all in student rooms: gas appliances, electric blankets, candle warmers, non-university-provided air conditioners and refrigerators.
Damage
Students are responsible for the condition of their room and the furniture assigned to that room, a Room Inspection Record must be completed and signed by each student. From this record, hall staff can identify problems and make needed repairs; students also avoid charges for damage done by previous occupants. Students will be charged for any damage found in the room that is not noted on the Room Inspection Record.
Cooking
Because cooking is not permitted in student rooms, each hall has a kitchen or kitchenette for the use of all students. Students must clean up after cooking. This is not the responsibility of housekeeping staff. With the exception of using a microwave oven to heat food, students are not permitted to cook in their rooms.
Pets
Pets can create safety and sanitation(卫生) problems, and therefore, are not permitted in students’ rooms. Fish is the only acceptable pet permitted in a room and may not be kept in tanks no longer than 5 gallons. Students who are found with unacceptable pets, whether visiting or owned by them, are facing an initial fine of $100 and a continuing fine of 50 a day per pet. Zou Yi, an environmentalist who lives in Beijing, has been filming the air quality near his home using his cellphone since 2013. For almost a decade till now, he has taken more than two million photos to chronic Beijing’s major environmental changes. The main purpose of taking these photos is to objectively record the changes of Beijing’s air quality every day.
After two months, Zhou YI juxtaposed (并列) 64 photos he took and posted them online. His move generated extensive discussion.
The fact that China is the first major developing country to fight against PM2.5 may sound unfamiliar to many, but most people have probably heard about the country’s action plan for preventing and controlling air pollution, or its critical battle against pollution. China has also demonstrated firm resolution in carbon reduction. As a result, clear skies and fresh air are returning to major cities.
Air quality has improved notably. Days with good air quality accounted for 87.5 percent of 2021, up 6.3 percentage points from 2015,making China the nation with the greatest air-quality improvement worldwide, according to official reports. The number of the people who follow the daily air quality photos is probably less than 10% of what it used to be. The less attention means that air pollution is not an issue anymore.
24. Why has Zhou Yi been taking photos of Beijing’s sky?
A. To collect photos for his WeChat Friend Circle.
B. To make remarks on Beijing’s unique scenes.
C. To chart the changes of Beijing’s air quality.
D. To track the changes of Beijing’s temperature.
25. What’s Beijing’s current sky like?
A. Totally clean B. Remarkably improved.
C. Misty and cloudy. D. Smoggy and dusty.
26. What does the underlined part mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. put up B. wind up C. make up D. show up
27. From the last passage, we can infer that ______.
A. Air pollution is still a key concern for Beijing’s residents.
B. More and more people are concerned about air pollution now.
C. There used to be fewer people taking photos of climate changes in Beijing.
D. China has set a good example for the world in dealing with air pollution.

A lab-based sleep study found that people who were sleeping fewer than six hours a night for two weeks--and who thought they were doing just fine—functioned as badly on cognitive (认知的) and reflective tests as people who were deprived of (被剥夺) any sleep for two full nights. That’s because the brain needs uninterrupted sleep cycles to absorb fresh skills, form key memories, and repair the body from the day’s wear and tear. During sleep, your body is literally repairing and restoring itself on a cellular level.
A long-term lack of sleep therefore impacts your ability to pay attention, learn new things, be creative, solve problems and make decisions. Even skipping sleep for just one night disrupts functioning. Mounting evidence shows that sleep influences the long–term risks of memory issues, cognitive decline.
A research suggests that recovery from sleep deprivation (many days of it, in particular) may not be so easy. The effects of sleep deprivation on the brain’s attention and cognitive processing abilities may linger as long as a week after we’ve returned to a regular sleep routine, warns a study.
Want to live longer? Then prioritize sleep and following five good sleep habits in your life-- falling asleep easily, staying asleep, getting seven to eight hours of zzz’s, waking up rested and abandoning sleep medicines—People were scored on how many of the five habits they had. Compared to individuals who had zero to one favorable sleep factors, those who had all five were 30% less likely to die for any reason. Obeying the five good sleep habits added nearly 5 years to a man’s life expectancy and almost 2.5 years to a woman’s life, the new study found. However, according to researchers, the reason for the obvious gap between men and female needs further studies.
Make sure you get a full seven to eight hours of sleep each night. That’s tough for many people. It’s important to go to bed at the same time on most nights and get up at the same time in the mornings—even on weekends and holidays. Make sure your environment is ideal—cooler and darker is better—and block noise. Set up a sleep routine, with no blue lights or distractions at least an hour before bedtime. Try meditation, yoga, tai chi or warm baths—anything that relaxes you is great. Anyway, you can’t attach too much importance to your sleep.
28. From the first paragraph we learn that______.
A. Lack of sleep can result in functional declines.
B. Two nights of no sleep influence your performance even worse.
C. During sleep, our body stops working actually.
D. Frequent interruption during sleep doesn’t impact our brain’s functions.
29. What will lack of sleep for a long time lead to?
A. Lack of concentration. B. Critical thinking
C. Aggressive personality. D. Bad mood.
30. What remains to be explored according to the new study?
A. Why some individuals scored zero in the study.
B. Why sleep habits influence the life expectancy.
C. Why good sleep habits impact women and men differently.
D. Why people with good sleep habits tend to live longer.
31. Which of the following contributes to a good sleep?
A. Varying your sleeping routines on a weekly basis.
B. Exposing your room to moonlight at night.
C. Relaxing your body with some mild activities before bedtime.
D. Stopping surfing online half an hour before bedtime.
D
Did you watch the popular TV series Meet Yourself during your winter vacation? In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local café. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a growing audience, volunteer travel –an old yet–modern form of travel similar to Xu’s type of work—has attracted more attention.
Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others, according to Wise Tour, an online provider of tourist information. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide services like teaching, cooking, animal caring, and cultural activities. In exchange for their help, the volunteers may get free or discounted accommodation, meals and laundry, activities, or classes.
It seems as if these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transportation. Nevertheless, volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s, when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself describes, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteer originate from in recent years. Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. Yang Yan, a founder of a volunteer platform, told the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.
People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the communities they serve. Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban dwellers to get a taste of rural life. For those who are sick of urban pressure but can’t make up their minds whether to move permanently to the countryside, volunteer travel can catch some relief from their busy lives, while rural communities also benefit by receiving more customers for local tourism industries and temporary high-quality labor.
32. Why is the TV series Meet Yourself mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic B. To present arguments
C. To inform us of an event D. To highlight a new travel trend
33. Which of the following is Volunteer Travel?
A. Traveling without paying for meals and accommodations.
B. Taking planes to Shanghai to visit Disneyland.
C. Randomly travelling to a remote village and living there.
D. Engaging in some arranged service while travelling in rural areas.
34. Why do people try Volunteer Travel?
A. To escape the fast-paced urban life permanently.
B. To impact the world positively.
C. To promote rural tourism by donating money.
D. To generate more job opportunities for rural residents.
35. Which one is the best title of the passage?
A. Travel remotely and freely. B. Travel with relief.
C. Travel with purpose. D. Travel to encounter love

Reading is an essential part of my work, and most importantly, it’s my favorite thing to do.
But reading takes time, and most days, I can’t read as much as I’d like. As I was writing Better Than Before, I adopted several new habits to help me get more reading done. ___36___.
Quit reading. I’d developed the habit of finishing every book I read, because a “real” reader finishes books. I know I wasn’t alone. According to Goodreads, ___38___ percent of readers always finish a book. ___37___ What a relief! When I let myself abandon a boring book, I have more time to read what I love.
Scan. Especially when reading newspapers, magazines and news on the Internet. ___38___ Also, even if you spend many hours a day reading, you may feel as though you don’t have any time to read. The habit ensures that low-value reading doesn’t crowd out high-value reading.
___39___ It’s satisfying to stretch. Try setting aside some time each week to read books that are a bit challenging. I used the habit-formation Strategy of Scheduling to form the habit of doing “Studying Reading” each weekend, to ensure that I make time to read books that I may not glad read.
Try audio-books. Listening to a book can be a way to experience it in a terrific new way, and makes books available in situations where it’s impossible to read—say, when driving. Also, if you’re trying to form a habit, it’s also a great way to use the Strategy of Pairing. If you don’t particularly enjoy going for a daily walk, but want to get that exercise, try pairing your walk with an engaging audio-book. ___40___.
A. You’ll find the time will fly.
B. Keep a reading list, and keep it handy.
C. Set aside time to read demanding books.
D. Consider whether these habits might work for you.
E. Certain kinds of materials don’t need to be read carefully.
F. Whenever I hear about a book I want to read, I add it to my library list.
G. However, I’ve adopted the habit of putting down a book as soon as I lose interest.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The sound of glass breaking was immediately recognizable. I had been telling my best friend a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the rug(地毯), it was covered with tiny shards(碎片) of sparking red, pink and clear glass. Missi said, “Oh, no, not the vase.”
“Why? What did I do?” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America,” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the department, I would have gladly said I did it. But you’re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom(传家宝). Why did I have to spin around like that?
We gathered up the broken pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so delicate, like a colorful light bulb had exploded. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home by six. My stomach was in knots. Would her mom yell at me or punish me? Would she tell me that I couldn’t stay in their department for the weekend? Although it was hot then, I was in a cold sweat and couldn’t stop playing the scene over in my mind. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry”.
A couple of minutes after six, we heard a key turn in the door. Missi’s mom was home.
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________
“Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase! You’ve done me a huge favor!” Missi’s mom screamed with delight.

W: Welcome to Brian’s Club Center. You’re sure to enjoy yourself here. Everyone here can experience healthy living. Only fruit, vegetables, fish and chicken are served here. No red meat. As for the alcohol, we only provide red wine. You’re allowed to have one glass at lunchtime.
We must always keep in mind that exercise is important. However, it can also be harmful if you don’t know what you’re doing. So we make everyone an exercise plan here. Mostly it’s light exercise, such as walking or Tai Chi. Swimming is also encouraged.
You can also enjoy entertainment here. But you may have found that there is no TV in any of your rooms. It doesn’t mean that we don’t want you to relax. It’s just that we prefer you to relax in the garden, or chat in a group instead of watching TV inside.
Besides, you can see every day’s newspapers here. If you’d like the newspaper to be sent to your room each morning, please tell the people at reception. Reading is encouraged. There are lots of books in the library, all of which can be borrowed free of charge.

Dear Jim,
I’m happy to receive your letter and know you’re coming to China.
Of the two trips to the Yangtze River and Mount Tai, both are highly recommended. But personally, I prefer the tour along the Yangtze, the longest river and one of the mother rivers of Chinese civilization. You can learn a lot about the history of China and Chinese people. Moreover, the scenery along the river is amazing, with many well-known sightseeing spots. That’s why I think the trip along the Yangtze will be a better choice.
Hope you’ll have a good time in China.
Yours, Li Hua
读后续写:
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. And she offered to take us out for a cold drink. Before that, I gathered my courage to say, “Aunt, I have something to tell you. I came with Missi, and we were talking and laughing. I spun around and didn’t look beforehand. The glass vase behind the couch fell. It broke into pieces. I am sorry.” I could feel my voice trembling.
“Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase! You’ve done me a huge favor.” Missi’s mom screamed with delight. I couldn’t believe my ears. This was not at all the reaction I had expected. Feeling shocked for a while, I couldn’t stop the tears running down my face. I suddenly realized how considerate Missi’s mom was. She probably was not happy because I had broken the vase. But she saw my uneasiness and tried to make me feel at ease. She taught me a lesson about consideration which I would always remember.
