Food expressions are popular with language learners. They combine two important things to every culture: food and language. Today we are going to talk potatoes!
Whether you like them boiled, baked or fried-potatoes are what we call a staple(主要食物).This means they are a kind of basic food that you can build on. You can cover them in butter, salt and pepper or sour cream and herbs. And for people who eat pork, you have not lived until you have eaten a baked potato topped with cheese and bacon!
We have a potato expression to describe a person like that: simple, basic and common. If someone is a “meat-and-potatoes” kind of person, they prefer eating simple meals such as—well, meat and potatoes. They are not interested in complex, expensive food. They are unpretentious.
Men are often described by this expression. When I hear about a “meat-and-potatoes” man, I picture a big, beefy-guy. He likes to wear blue jeans and a simple T-shirt. He probably drives a truck and can fix it himself. He is a simple, no-nonsense kind of guy.
It is a little less common, but we can also describe a woman as a “meat-and-potatoes” kind of person. This type of woman not only likes to eat steak and hamburgers, and she is also a down-to-earth(实际的)person. She likes simple things and can take care of herself.
People can also be called “small potatoes”. It is a way of saying they are not a danger. If the police in a big city do not have enough resources, they probably won’t waste manpower on small potatoes, like bicycle thieves. Please note that we may say “small potatoes” for unimportant matters, but we do not say “big potatoes” for important ones. English is funny that way!
    24. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 2?
    A. To recommend the writer’s favourite potato dish.
    B. To introduce the most effective way of cooking potatoes.
    C. To show that people can’t live without eating a baked potato.
    D. To show that potatoes are a kind of main food for most people in their life.
    25. What does the underlined word “unpretentious” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Typical. B. Simple. C. Confident. D. Impressive.
    26. What kind of woman can be described as “meat-and-potatoes”?
    A. Women who like expensive things. B. Women who like to wear blue jeans.
    C. Women who dislike to eat steak. D. Women who can look after themselves well.
    27. What can we learn from this passage?
    A. A boy who stole a piece of bread might be called a “small potato” by the police.
    B. If someone is in danger, he can be called “meat-and-potatoes”.
    C. Women are not willing to be described as “meat-and-potatoes”.
    D. People often use “big potatoes” to describe very important things.
    C
As a classic love movie of the twentieth century, Titanic makes one scene a long-lasting cinematic shot: Jack let go of his hand and sank in the icy seawater, leaving the chance of living to his lover Rose, who finally survived on a wooden door debris(残骸).
More than 100 years since the disastrous event and more than two decades after the earliest release of the movie Titanic, there have been many “door theories”. Audiences debate heatedly over whether or not Jack and Rose could have both fit onto the wooden debris and survived. So, was there room for Jack?
In a TV program, hosts Jamie and Adam even did an experiment using an exact replica(复制品)of the wooden piece from the movie, and the two proved that if they had tied Rose’s life jacket to the bottom of the door to strengthen its buoyancy(浮力), they would have managed to stay afloat(在水上漂浮的).
However, their conclusion was debunked(驳斥)when director Cameron said that the freezing water and Jack’s high temperature would have made the life jacket solution impossible. He also said that the debate is beyond the point the movie was trying to make, which is focused on the tragic love story of Jack and Rose, not physics.
The largest debris recovered from the real Titanic is now displayed in the Maritime Museum. The museum’s website states that a replica was once built for the movie based on the museum’s Titanic collection which was known as the “door” used in the death scene. Unfortunately, the size of the debris coupled with the weight of Rose on top could work, but not if Jack’s additional weight was added to it.
In a word, science has proven that Jack didn’t die for nothing and did indeed sacrifice(牺牲)himself to save the love of his life.
    28. What have the audiences doubted about Titanic?
    A. They question the director’s level of direction.
    B. They think the ending of the story was not good enough.
    C. They disagree with the separation of the hero and heroine.
    D. They believe that the hero has a chance of survival as well.
    29. What is the conclusion of Jamie and Adam based on?
    A. The development of the plot. B. A physics experiment.
    C. The theme of the movie. D. A heated debate.
    30. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
    A. Jack died by accident. B. Jack’s death was avoidable.
    C. The movie’s ending is reasonable. D. The door could make a difference.
    31. Where can we probably find this article?
    A. A popular magazine. B. A movie poster.
    C. A technology report. D. A film review.
    D

ChatGPT, a powerful Al chatbot tool, has swept the world in the past months. While it has been dominating social media with its frighteningly good essays, ChatGPT has also caused both excitement and worries in education.
According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them had used ChatGPT to help with a homework task. Some students even got high scores thanks to papers written by ChatGPT.
Some universities and schools have banned the use of ChatGPT, such as public schools in New York City, CNN reported. The move comes out of growing concerns that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on schoolwork and be used to spread inaccurate(不精确的)information. “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic(学术的)and lifelong success,” Jenna Lyle, said in a statement.
Apart from strict bans, teachers are redesigning their courses in an attempt to block the use of ChatGPT. Some college professors in the US are now including more oral exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones, The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators are saying “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are not planning on banning the tool. Instead, they are working on policies(政策)about its proper usage, for both students and lecturers.
Bhaskar Vira, pro-vice-chancellor for education at University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not sensible. “I’m of the opinion that we have to recognise that AI is a tool people will use but then adapt our learning, teaching and examination processes so that we can continue to have integrity(诚信)while recognising the use of the tool,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university.
Vira’s opinion on ChatGPT is shared by Peter van der Putten, assistant professor at Leiden University in the Netherlands. “It’s there, just like Google is there. You can write it into your policies for stopping cheating but it’s a reality that the tool exists,” he told Sky News.
    32. Why did the author mention the US survey data in Paragraph 2?
    A. To criticize the use of ChatGPT in education.
    B. To show the popularity of ChatGPT among students.
    C. To show the places of using ChatGPT for academic tasks.
    D. To highlight the negative effects of ChatGPT on academic integrity.
    33. What is the concern that led some universities and schools to ban the use of ChatGPT?
    A. The tool is too expensive.
    B. The tool is not user-friendly.
    C. The tool can cause physical harm to students.
    D. The tool may be used to spread inaccurate information.
    34. Why are some educators redesigning their courses?
    A. To make them more difficult. B. To allow the use of ChatGPT.
    C. To decrease the workload of students. D. To prevent students from using ChatGPT.
    35. What is the opinion of Peter van der Putten on the use of ChatGPT?
    A. It should be used with proper policies and guidelines.
    B. It is not a useful tool for students.
    C. It should be used without limits.
    D. It should be banned.

My mother worked as a housekeeper and she was often given used toys as well as many other goodies by her clients. My elder sister and I always loved sharing the recycled books and board games brought home by my beloved mom, which we considered great gifts life presented us.
The long-awaited Christmas finally approached. One December day, an old model toy car arrived in the load of goods. It was as long as my forearm and took both hands to lift. My sister didn’t want it, so it was all mine. I immediately set down to wiping it clean and polishing(擦亮)it to a bright candy-apple red. It turned to be a thing of beauty, and I became overjoyed at possessing it. My elder sister was amazed at the newly-polished, refreshing toy car, with a hint of regret and envy(羡慕)in her eyes.
As it was planned, our relatives from France came to visit us that Christmas. It was a time when the family bond got strengthened. I shared the prized toy car with Alex, my young French cousin. Eyes glued to it, he fell in love with the wonderful, shiny red automobile as soon as he saw it. It was a rare moment to see him feeling so relieved and happy. He’d been unlucky so far in life, suffering severe illnesses as a child, leaving him mentally and physically stuck and the family starved of cash. Of course, such lovely toys like my dear model car were unreachable dreams for him.
Seeing Alex’s excitement brought by the red car, a voice inside me constantly reminded, “Watch out! He’d keep it for himself.” which got me faintly worried. I followed my cousin for fear of something.
My mother also noticed Alex’s fondness for the car. Approaching me, she asked gently in a low voice, “Would you like to give it to Alex?”

    Dear Professor Wang,
I’m writing to express my sincere gratitude for your kind help in our class meeting “Protect Our Earth”.
Your lecture is such a great success that we are deeply impressed by it. The activity has fueled our passion for concern about our earth, and raised our awareness of protecting the environment. Realising the great harm caused by the smog and the importance of the environment, many of our students have taken immediate action such as planting more trees and volunteering to educate the public to learn recycling to protect the earth.
Many thanks for your time and support, and we’ll do our part to make our earth beautiful.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
    【参考范文】
Giving or keeping? I struggled with myself. Giving it? Hardly could I imagine life without the model car! After all, it was my most precious treasure, which I had been proud of. My heart kept aching at the prospect of giving it away. No! I shook my head determinedly. Glancing at my mother’s expectant eyes, I couldn’t help sobbing. Keeping it? Definitely, it would otherwise upset Alex. Torn between the two tough choices, I was totally at a loss. Nevertheless, deep down, I could feel my affection to Alex. Yes! I resolved to do the right thing.
In the moment of parting, my model car went with Alex. Though I was crushed to see it go, my heart sang when I saw his beaming face as he tightly clutched it. Seeing the thumbs-up from my mother and sister, I did swell with relief, pride and joy, for I knew it was not a gift; to some extent, it was our concern and love for him. Besides, sharing the model car also strengthened our bond, which, I was fully convinced, would always uplift him. An effort made for the happiness of others lifted us above ourselves as well.
