Rich life experiences have helped make up everything you are today. So just imagine how many valuable experiences your elders can share with you. When you spend time volunteering with seniors, you'll benefit just as much as they do!

We've put together some ideas for different ways to lend a hand, or a listening ear to seniors. Remember, simply giving your time and conversation can sometimes mean the most.

    Visit an assisted living facility

One of the most meaningful things you can do for someone in an assisted living facility is share some quality time together. Whether you're going to see a neighbor or loved one, call ahead to plan a time to drop by. Even if your days fill up quickly, just a quick hello can brighten someone's day.

    Reach out locally

Chances are that there are seniors right in your own neighborhood who could use your help.

●Some seniors' health prevents them from getting out. Keep them from feeling lonely by going for a visit or bringing over a meal.

●Offer to do many around-the-house chores for the seniors.

    Be a companion

There are plenty of seniors who could use some company! And there are many programs and organizations that can match you up with the perfect senior friend in your area.

●With the Elder Helpers program, you can sign up to help in ways that fit your interests and skills.

●You can join the Senior Corps program to help older seniors with daily tasks.

●You can also volunteer to help aging seniors through organizations such as the National Council on Aging.

    Be a skillful talker

You can learn from your older friends - many of their experiences may surprise you! But it can often be challenging to know just what to ask in order to start a conversation.

●Discover their passion: Does your friend love to cook? Ask them to share a favorite family recipe. They'll welcome the opportunity to chat about it.

●Discover their skills: Ask your friends about their skills and hobbies - sewing, woodworking, writing. Request that they teach you a thing or two.

●Make some artwork: Turn select pages of your memory book into wall art for their room, and so your friend can continuously recall good times.

21What does the author intend to do through the text?

ATo explain how to make seniors happy.

BTo introduce the benefits of volunteering.

CTo encourage people to share experiences.

DTo give a guide for volunteering with seniors.

22How many programs and organizations are mentioned?

    A2. B3. C4. D5.

23What is the “Be a skillful talker” part about?

AHow to answer questions. BHow to make up stories.

CHow to persuade the seniors. DHow to start a conversation.

    B

Humans are not the animal kingdom's only fashionistas. Tits ( ill) can be fashion followers, too, apparently. A latest study shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season's must-have colour.

Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin were following up on a study published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various coloured balls of yarn () out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds' nests. But which particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.

Williams's work was, however, forgotten until they came across it while following up on a different study, published by a team at the University of Toulouse, suggesting fashion-following, too. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams's experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.

The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue tits in a wood near the institute. Most birds in this wood carried tracking devices fitted to them after their capture in mist nets. That allowed the institute's researchers to keep track of a vast number of individuals by recording their arrival at food containers throughout the wood. Instead of food, these containers were loaded with wool of different colors. Interestingly, researchers soon found that most nests of blue tits included only the color of the wool first chosen by a nestbuildcr.

Tits, then, do seem to be “on trend”, when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains obscure. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin suspect the fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favours younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a tit. Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are at random-a bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.

24What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

ADr. Wild and Dr. Aplin contributed to William's work.

BEarly birds' color preference was copied by their fellows.

CThe yam was the most popular material to decorate local birds' nests.

DThe color of the yam favored by local birds was fixed throughout the year.

25How did Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin improve William's experiment?

    AThey observed the blue tits.

BThey studied the habits of blue tits.

    CThey adopted the data-collecting method.

DThey fitted tracking devices to food containers.

26What does the underlined word “obscure” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    AHidden. BEvident. CComplicated. DShallow.

27What is the main idea of the text?

ABirds favor certain colors in decoration.

BYoung birds follow their elders in fashion.

CYoung birds are just as intelligent as people.

DBirds are just as fashion-conscious as people.

Growing up in the Philippines, construction worker Johnny Manlugay combs the beaches each night for the eggs of sea turtles. He knows exactly what to look for,as he was trained as a child by his grandfather on how to locate the animals and their eggs. Back then, his family traded or ate them. It wasn’t about getting rich as much as it was just a part of life.

Manlugay has since turned over a new leaf. Instead,he uses his tracking skills to protect the sea turtles that visit the beaches he lives by.

“I’ve learned to love this work,”Manlugay acknowledged in an interview.“We didn’t know poaching(偷猎)was illegal and that we should not eat turtle eggs and meat.”

Manlugay delicately transferred each egg into a bucket he brought with him,as well as some sand from the turtle nests,to be handed over to Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions(CURMA)the group leading the conservation program on the beaches.

Established in 2009,the CURMA conservation effort has gradually transformed sea turtle poachers into valuable allies(盟友). They manage this by offering training to ultimately save thousands of turtles and keep their eggs from ending up everywhere but their nests.

“We talked to the poachers, and it turned out poaching was just another means for them to earn a living,”explained Carlos Tamayo, the director of operations.“They had no choice.”

On average, sea turtles lay 100 eggs in a nest. The number of nests in the area ranges between 35and 40 each season, which runs from October to February. Tamayo noted that the figures had doubled during the first year of the COVID pandemic.“Last season alone, for example,we had 75 nests and we released close to 9,000 hatching,”he shared.

Once collected, the eggs are then transferred to CURMA’s hatchery(孵化场)to be reburied in protected areas. Another former poacher,Jessie Cabagbag, grew up eating turtle meat and eggs like many people there.“I stopped poaching when we underwent training and were taught that what we have been doing was illegal and that these species of turtles are endangered,”he explained. Now,he admits,“I am truly proud. I am happy that I get to contribute to the conservation of the turtles.”

28Why did Johnny Manlugay hunt turtles as a child?

ATo make a living. BTo make a fortune. CTo protect them. DTo locate them.

29How does Johnny Manlugayc deal with the turtle eggs nowadays?

    ATo sell them.

    BTo hatch them.

CTo hand them over to a conservation organization.

DTo bury them under some sand near the turtle nests.

30On average, how many sea turtle eggs are laid in the area seasonally?

    AAbout 7500. BClose to 9.000.

    CFrom 3500 to 4000. DBetween 3500 and 10000.

31What’s the best title for this passage?

ASea Turtles are Well Protected in the Philippines.

BLocal People in the Philippines Search the Beaches for Sea Turtle Eggs.

CThe Conservation Program Aims to Save Endangered Turtles.

DFormer Turtle Egg Poachers in the Philippines Turn Protectors.

One of the major reasons we take photos in the first place is to remember a moment long after it has passed: the birth of a baby, a reunion, etc. However, every time we snap a quick picture of something, we could in fact be harming our memory of it.

Linda Henkel, a professor of psychology at Fairfield University in Connecticut, studied how taking photos impacts experience and memory. She conducted an experiment using a group of undergraduates on a guided tour of the university’s Bellarmine Museum of Art. The students were asked to take photos of objects that they looked at on the tour and to simply observe others. Later, she tested their memory of all the objects they had seen on the tour. The results were clear. Overall, people remembered fewer of the objects they had photographed. They also couldn’t recall as many specific visual details of the photographed art, compared to the art they had merely observed.

“When you take a photo of something, you’re counting on the camera to remember for you,” Henkel said. “You don’t engage in any of the complex or emotional kinds of processing that really would help you remember those experiences, because you’ve outsourced it to your camera.”

Then, Henkel ran another study. This time when people took a tour of the museum, they were asked to take two kinds of photos: those of the objects in the exhibit alone and those with them standing next to the objects. It turns out that it actually changes their viewpoint on the experience, whether they’re in a photo or not. In other words, if you are in the image, you become more removed from the original moment as if you are an observer watching yourself doing something outside yourself. Interestingly, if you are not in the image, you remember more.

Henkel doesn’t disagree that the purpose of outsourcing our memory to devices can free up our brains to do other cognitive (认知的) processing. But from the experiments Henkel is sure that cameras can’t compare to what the brain is capable of with input from the eyes and the ears.

32What can we conclude from Henkel’s first experiment?

APeople take photos to remember a moment.

BTaking photos is a complex or emotional process.

CTaking photos influences experience and memory.

DPeople observe more of the objects when taking photos.

33When you are in a photo, you ______.

    Areturn to the original moment

    Bremember more about the object

Cchange your viewpoint on the photo

    Dbecome an observer outside yourself

34What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

ATo explain the reasons why people take photos.

BTo introduce the disadvantages of taking photos.

CTo persuade people not to rely on photos for memory.

DTo express disapproval of the use of devices to free brains.

    第三部分 书面表达(共两节,共32分)

    第一节 阅读表达(共4小题,第4041题各2分,第423分,第435分,共12分)

    阅读下面短文,根据题目要求回答问题。

Over the years I have been fascinated to read about studies into the power of touch.

One famous study examined videos of how people responded to those near them who had been the victim of a bad fortune. Researchers looked at their interaction with the victim, and compared this with behaviour in non-human primates (灵长类动物). It found that humans and primates comfort one another and demonstrate care in a similar way. It makes sense for me that offering hugs to calm victims may be an instinct that we got from primate ancestors.

Another study found that when the husband or wife of a patient in sorrow or discomfort reaches out and holds their hand and, as if by magic, they become settled and less sorrowful. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, as we have known for many years about the importance of touch. It symbolizes safety and love, and this is actually one of the most important aspects for development as a child. Is it any wonder that, when we are upset and distressed as adults, we seek out the same things? Whether young or old, humans are wired to be touched.

Nevertheless, many people today suffer from “touch hunger”, which typically occurs when a person experiences little touch or contact for a long time. It serves as a warning that the sense of security and care that comes with the contact of touch is missing. Thus, their well-being can suffer. It is associated with greater stress, anxiety and loneliness, and lower-quality sleep.

Actually, even the briefest touch from us can bring strong emotional experiences to the receivers who suffer from “touch hunger”. A warm handshake, a gentle pat on the shoulder, or a high-five is often enough to convey love and care.

    Be a giver!

40What did the first study find about touch?

    ____________________________________________________________

    41Why is touch important?

    ____________________________________________________________

42Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.

Touch has the great power to give people who suffer from “touch hunger“ strong emotional experiences, but a brief touch like a handshake is too light to convey love and care.

    ____________________________________________________________

43Apart from touch, what other way(s) do you often use to express your love and care in your life?(In about 40 words)

    ____________________________________________________________
